More On The Clinton Campaign
And The Texas "Lawsuit" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- read at source> http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/arch...._campaign_a.php I asked Guy Cecil, the national political director for the Clinton campaign, where he ""forcefully raise[d] the prospect of a courtroom battle?" as suggested by the Houston Chroncile. "Absolutely not. There was no threat, 'direct or veiled' to engage in litigation. We asked that the results of the call be put in writing," he said. Mo Elliethee, a Clinton campaign spokesman, elaborated for me. "The campaigns have been discussing primary night procedures and we asked for those procedures to be put in writing before we agree to them. It is standard operating procedure for our campaign - and we presume any campaign - to see what we are agreeing to in writing before we agree to it." My guess is that the campaign is worried about what happens when the voting stops and the caucus starts and believes that the Texas Democratic Party isn't prepared to run the caucuses competently. Remember, Texas awards delegates in two parts; two thirds to the winners of 31 state senate district primaries, allocated proportionally; and then to the winners of a statewide caucus; only those voters who can prove they voted in the primaries can participate in the caucus. The call where Cecil allegedly made his
threats lasted ninety minutes long and featured participants
from both campaigns. By singling Cecil's request to put the party's
interpertation of its caucus rules on paper, the party might
simply be trying to ward off potential challenges to its procedures
on caucus night... or trying to embarass the Clinton campaign. |

I need you to make your voice
heard today -- literally. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Over the past week, supporters have made more than 700,000 phone calls right from their own homes. They are reaching out to voters in Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island, and Vermont before the March 4th primaries. We've set a goal of 1 million calls to help Get Out The Vote for these critical contests -- will you help? All you need is a few minutes, a phone
line, and a passion for change. Start making calls right now: Personal contact is the best way to grow this movement, and now you can make these connections right from your own home. We've identified likely supporters in Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island, and Vermont, and with our online phonebanking tool, you can start calling them right away. It couldn't be easier. Simply choose the March 4th state you'd like to call, and you'll get a list of phone numbers and a simple script you can use to start growing this movement, one person at a time. Take a few minutes to make a call, and
I'm certain you'll want to make five more: We asked a few of the thousands of supporters who have already started making calls what they wanted to tell you about the experience. Here's what some of them had to say: I am a fairly new caller from Texas and I wanted to pass on a few thoughts. I called this afternoon to some fellow Texans (mostly from the San Antonio area) ... one woman was initially undecided but now is definitely supporting Senator Obama and so is her husband! It was talking to her one on one that made
a big difference. I explained the primary and caucus deal to
her (which she did not know) and she was very appreciative. Please
let the other callers know that voters in Texas are very willing
to hear our message...please keep calling Texas! There are a
lot of undecided voters here. Thanks so much for all that YOU
do!! Just want to mention that I had been wavering between Barack and Hillary for a long time -- I'd even donated money to both campaigns. However, over many weeks I received calls from Sen. Obama's volunteers ... Those calls from the phone bank volunteers went a long way toward finally helping me make up my mind. Their sincerity, their passion, and their loyalty to Barack really impressed me (and I don't impress easily -- I spent 20 years as a TV producer in LA). I'm a woman who's Hillary's age and the last campaign I volunteered for was (oddly) Bill Clinton's first run. Anyway, I will do my best to duplicate the passion of the Obama supporters who called me, as I pick up the phone to talk to others. -- DeeDee from Arizona Make some phone calls right now, and see
just what Bonnie and DeeDee are talking about: You have helped accomplish some extraordinary things during this campaign. But the most extraordinary things happen at the personal level, when you can make that personal connection to a voter and discover that you share a common vision of what ought to be. Make a call and make that connection today. Thank you, |

Yesterday, I asked you to
make a statement, and you shouted from the rooftops. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yesterday, I asked you to make a statement, and you shouted from the rooftops. I set an ambitious goal -- 30,000 contributions in 48 hours -- and you're almost there just one day later. So we're setting a new goal to reflect your commitment to this campaign: 50,000 contributions in 72 hours. Your energy and enthusiasm match what I'm seeing on the campaign trail. Every day I talk to crowds of thousands of people in the March 4 states who are ready to get to work to solve America's biggest problems. Just like you and me, they want to win this race, and together, I know we will. But first, let's make it to this big new goal: 50,000 contributions in 72 hours. I know this may be the first time you have made a contribution online, but any amount, even as little as $5, can make a difference in this race. Contribute $5 and help us win on March
4. Together we are doing the hard work it's going to take to win. You are giving us the support, the resources, and the momentum we need at this critical moment, and I can't possibly thank you enough. Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton |

Yesterday, supporters all
across the country responded to Barack's request by making more
than 300,000 calls into crucial March 4th primary states. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We reached our goal of one million calls
much faster than expected, so we're setting a new goal: 1,500,000
calls to voters by Tuesday. There's no easier or more effective way to keep building momentum for this campaign than making calls to likely supporters. And there's no more important time to get
involved than right now. The online phonebanking tool is easy and fun to use. Here's how it works: Choose a state you'd like to call. Log into My.BarackObama.com and get a list of 20 names that only you will receive. (If you don't have a My.BarackObama account, creating one is fast and easy.) Click on a name and you'll be led through a simple script, question by question. Start making calls. It's as easy as that -- a list of likely
supporters and an opportunity to make personal connections right
from your own home. Make your voice heard. Start making calls
today: David P.S. -- There are a number of specific
calling campaigns that you can select if you have special skills
or interests. If you are a woman, you can choose to speak
with other women about why you support Barack: If you're a student, you can talk to other

to vote for Hillary, and I hope you know that you helped get

And in the last 72 hours, 50,000 of you stood up and spoke out by making a contribution to our campaign. That means we put more ads on the air, knocked on more doors, and reached more voters leading up to tomorrow's primaries. It means we can offer more rides to the polls. You have given us the energy and momentum we need, and our victories are your victories. We're in our final push to win tomorrow, and you can still lend a hand. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery: "Mr. Speaker, I strongly support this long-overdue, bipartisan legislation to end discrimination against patients seeking treatment for mental illnesses. "And, I want to commend Congressmen Kennedy and Ramstad for their hard work on this legislation the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act which now has 274 co-sponsors on both sides of the aisle. "Under this bill, an insurer or group health plan must ensure that any financial requirements such as deductibles, co-payments, co-insurance and out-of-pocket expenses applied to mental health and addiction treatments are no more restrictive or costly than the financial requirements applied to comparable medical and surgical benefits that the plan covers. "It also requires equity in treatment limits. This means that the treatment limits such as frequency of treatment, number of visits, and days of coverage applied to mental health and addiction benefits are no more restrictive than the treatment limits applied to comparable medical and surgical benefits. "It is important to note that this bill only applies to insurers and group health plans that provide mental health benefits. That is, it does NOT require plans that do not currently offer mental health benefits to do so. "It also exempts businesses with 50 or fewer employees and businesses that experience an overall premium increase of two percent or more in the first year and one percent in subsequent years. "Research has shown that there has been no significant cost increase attributable to the parity requirement in the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program, which has made parity coverage for mental health care available to more than 8.5 million federal employees for eight years. "Furthermore, the bills enforcement mechanisms are real permitting the IRS to enforce and levy fines and penalties on plans or disallowing employers from deducting health care costs as an expense. "The two offsets in this bill were included in the Childrens Health and Medicare Protection Act (or CHAMP Act), which passed the House last August. The first increases the rebate or discount that drug companies are required to provide state Medicaid programs for drugs provided to Medicaid beneficiaries. And, the second prohibits physicians from referring patients to hospitals in which they have an ownership interest, with the ability to grandfather existing physician-owned hospitals. "It is telling, Mr. Speaker, that this bill is supported by, among others, the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, the American Nurses Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association. "I urge my colleagues to vote against discrimination. "Vote for equity in health care benefits for millions of Americans. "Vote for this bipartisan bill."

John McCain formally won the
Republican nomination -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There's no question that George Bush knows that John McCain will pick up where he leaves off. Make no mistake, McCain is the closest Bush will have to a third term, and the White House will do anything to get him elected. In fact, they're so similar, John McCain had little to say -- George Bush did most of the talking for both of them. He even suggested that McCain doesn't represent change, saying that it's something candidates have to run on because it's what the American people want to hear. Once again, McCain and Bush are both telling the American people what they want to hear, rather than the truth. It's frightening how much George Bush likes John McCain, and it should tell you all you need to know. We've had a few late nights around here,
and I'm sure we'll have a few more. We're working non-stop to
beat John McCain and George Bush. Now that McCain is formally
the Republican nominee, he has the Republican establishment lined
up firmly behind him. We can't afford to let him get ahead: Governor Dean will be in touch soon, but I wanted to send you a note right away. This election is just too important to let John McCain and George Bush get a head start. Tom McMahon |

We defied the odds last night
-- yes, WE -- and with our stunning victories, the momentum is
now all on our side. We're going on, we're going strong, and
we're going all the way. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Against all the odds, facing an opponent with more momentum and twice as many ads on the air, you kept working, giving, and believing. And that hard work is going to put us in the White House. We put everything on the line for these wins, and now it's time to put our hard-earned momentum to work. Without skipping a beat, we need to match the Obama campaign's effort in Pennsylvania -- our next big contest -- and that means I am relying on you again. We need $3 million in the next 24 hours to ramp up our efforts immediately. Contribute now to help us reach $3 million
in 24 hours. Millions of Americans have yet to speak. In states like Wyoming, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania, people are watching this campaign and want their voices to count. It's up to us to give them that chance. That means keeping this race competitive. Thanks to you, we cut his four-to-one advertising advantage in half in March 4 states. Now our next step is to quickly replenish our resources. We don't intend to play catch-up with the Obama campaign. With your help, we're opening volunteer headquarters all across the state of Pennsylvania before the week is out. We will launch a campaign ready, willing, and able to reach out to voters all across a state that now finds itself at the absolute center of the 2008 campaign. Help us kick off our Pennsylvania campaign by reaching $3 million in the next 24 hours. Contribute now to help us reach $3 million
in 24 hours. This nation is coming back, and so is this campaign. The speed and energy with which we take advantage of our regained momentum is up to you. Thank you for being there for me. I promise in the White House, I will be there for you every day. Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton |

Did you feel the race shift?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Those last few days before Hillary's big wins, could you feel the difference? The crowds, the energy, the momentum of the whole race seemed to be shifting in Hillary's direction. That was you. Our online supporters fueled Hillary's stunning comeback, and she and I both know that this campaign would not be where it is today without you. You should be incredibly proud of what you have accomplished. And in the last 24 hours, you did it again, raising an extraordinary $3 million. We worked too hard to get to this point to do anything except drive towards victory in Pennsylvania and beyond. And doubling the $3 million you just raised -- reaching $6 million in 48 hours -- will make it clear to everyone watching that we're playing to win. Any contribution, even as little as $5, will make a difference to this campaign. I know this might be the first time you have made a contribution online, but there is no better time to help. Give Hillary a head start with with a $5
contribution today. Let me put what you accomplished yesterday in perspective. More than 45,000 of you contributed to Hillary's campaign in the wake of her wins in Texas, Ohio, and Rhode Island. You didn't just make her comeback possible. You are providing the resources it takes to win big races. We need to hit the ground running in Pennsylvania, and thanks to your commitment to Hillary, we are doing exactly that. No one thought we could compete on the air in Ohio and Texas -- but thanks to you, we did. You are making the impossible possible and meeting every challenge. That's just what Hillary will do as president, just so long as we keep working with her to win. Can you help put Hillary in the position to win Pennsylvania with your contribution today? Hitting another $3 million goal in 24 hours will give her a big head start. Give Hillary a head start with with a $5
contribution today. I know I speak for Hillary when I tell you that we both know how deep your commitment to her campaign runs. And she is matching that commitment with her effort every day on the campaign trail, because your support deserves nothing less. Thank you so much for everything you are doing to help Hillary win. Sincerely, Bill Clinton |
Hoyer: Democratic Budget Resolution
a Blueprint for Strengthening Economy, Making America Safer --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today praising the Fiscal Year 2009 Budget assembled by Chairman John Spratt and passed by the House Budget Committee early this morning. The budget resolution is expected on the House Floor next week: The budget passed by the House Budget Committee today is a blueprint for strengthening our economy and making America safer, and it reflects the priorities of the American people. After years of record deficits and debt created by the Bush Administrations fiscally irresponsible policies, the Democratic budget puts an end to their damaging policies. Our budget is fiscally responsible, complies with pay-as-you-go budget rules, and reaches balance in 2012. In addition, our budget includes reconciliation instructions for legislation addressing the AMT and Medicare physician payments in a fiscally responsible manner. The Presidents budget policies are deeply misguided and make harmful cuts to critical areas such as state and local law enforcement, health care, and veterans and military retirees. Democrats reject those cuts, and are instead offering a budget that invests in education, innovation, energy, and infrastructure. The Democratic budget provides for middle-class tax relief that does not add to the debt, and invests in national security and defense. Investing in the future is what the American people want and expect us to do. I applaud Chairman Spratt and the House Budget Committee for their efforts, and I expect to bring the FY 2009 budget resolution to the House Floor next week.

Majority Leader: House Republicans
Play Politics with Community Service Bill --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans chose to play games with the GIVE Act, a community service bill: "It is extremely unfortunate that House Republicans -- who are bereft of any real agenda or policy ideas -- are left only to play procedural games with legislation, even legislation such as the GIVE Act, which passed out of the Education and Labor Committee on a unanimous 44-0 vote, and enjoys strong bipartisan and White House support. Despite temporary delays caused by this Republican gamesmanship, we have every intention of moving forward with this legislation and will pass it as soon as possible. "In lieu of having a real agenda, House Republicans have resorted to playing procedural games that only temporarily delay passage of important legislation."

WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this afternoon regarding the terrorist attack at a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem that killed at least seven people and wounded 10 others: I want to express my sincere condolences to the State of Israel and the families of those who were murdered and injured in todays terrorist attacks at the Mercaz Harav seminary. There is absolutely no justification for this savage terrorist attack on innocent students, and all those who believe in peace and the rule of law should condemn it. At this difficult time, our Israeli allies should know that the United States stands by their side, as partners in this war on terrorism, hatred and intolerance.

Majority Leader Hoyer: February
Job Loss Is Further Confirmation of Sagging Bush Economy --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning after the Labor Department reported that the U.S. economy lost 63,000 jobs in February, the largest monthly job decline in nearly five years: The steep job loss for February reported today by the Labor Department is simply confirmation that the Bush Administrations economic policies are failing the American people, and another indication of the economic insecurities that face hard-working families. What is especially troubling is that this is the second straight month of job losses, and that the Labor Department had to reduce their original numbers for December and January. Only 41,000 jobs were created in December far less than the 82,000 originally reported and well below the monthly increase of 150,000 that is necessary just to keep pace with population growth. Even more jobs were lost in January than previously stated, with 22,000 jobs lost as opposed to the 17,000 announced a month ago. The bipartisan economic stimulus passed by the Democratic Congress and signed into law by President Bush earlier this year was an important step forward, but it cannot possibly make up for the dismal performance of our economy over the last seven years. Under this Administration, household incomes are down, while the number of uninsured has skyrocketed, poverty has risen, college costs have exploded, and gas prices have more than doubled. The Bush Administration seems flummoxed when it comes to the economy, and has taken a hands-off approach. It is imperative that our nation and our economy head in a new direction, and that will only occur when a Democrat occupies the White House.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY
LEADER --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week, the House passed the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act, an historic bill that will eliminate discriminatory provisions that make it more difficult and more costly for people with mental illnesses to receive treatment. Approximately 54 million Americans will directly benefit from this long-overdue bill, and hopefully by ensuring equity for costs and treatment limitations will allow more people who need it to seek treatment. Majority Leader Hoyer speaks at a rally
for Mental Also this week, the House Budget Committee passed a budget resolution that repudiates the President's misguided policies and instead reflects the priorities of the American people. The Democratic budget is fiscally responsible, putting an end to the President's damaging policies that have created record deficits and debt. Our budget rejects the President's cuts to state and local law enforcement, health care, and veterans, and it invests in areas key to America's future, including education, innovation, energy, and infrastructure. I expect to bring the budget resolution to the Floor next week for a vote. Also next week, I am hopeful that we will consider legislation modernizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, as well as legislation that will restore the integrity of and bring greater accountability to the ethics enforcement process. Sincerely yours, STENY H. HOYER |

Majority Leader Hoyer Calls
Veto of Intelligence Bill "Deeply Misguided" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC -- House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning after President Bush vetoed the Intelligence Authorization Conference Report because it included a provision extending the Army Field Manual's prohibition on torture to intelligence community personnel: "The President's veto of this critical legislation is a deeply misguided and harmful mistake that threatens to further undermine our credibility in the international community and to expose our military and intelligence personnel to the very same tactics and treatment. It is unfortunate, but friend and foe alike will interpret this veto as nothing more than a hypocritical American effort to reserve for itself the tactics that we so often correctly deride and castigate. "Quite simply, torture - whether it is called that or something more sanitized, such as 'specialized interrogation procedures' - is immoral and violates the values that our great nation was founded upon. In addition, military and civilian intelligence officials have repeatedly stated that torture is unnecessary and in any event has limited value. Even General Petraeus, our top commander in Iraq, stated last year, 'Some may argue that we would be more effective if we sanctioned torture or other expedient methods to obtain information from the enemy. They would be wrong. Beyond the basic fact that such actions are illegal, history shows that they also are frequently neither useful nor necessary.' "In addition, this legislation also would have authorized critical programs and resources for our intelligence community which works diligently to keep us safe. The House of Representatives will attempt to override this unjustified veto soon. If we fail to do so, we will continue to make the case against torture for the remainder of the Bush Administration and urge the incoming Administration to take a position that comports with our American values and strengthens our national security."

Hoyer Statement on Override
Vote on Presidents Veto of Intelligence Authorization Bill --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) spoke on the House Floor this evening in support of overriding the Presidents misguided veto of the Intelligence Authorization Conference Report. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery: Mr. Speaker, on Saturday, the President could have made a clear, unequivocal statement that this great nation does not and will not torture those in our custody. He should have signed this important Intelligence Authorization Conference Report into law. But instead, he vetoed it, because it requires all American intelligence agencies to comply with the U.S. Army Field Manual on Interrogations. Let us be clear: this veto was deeply misguided. It threatens to further degrade Americas moral standing; to undermine our credibility in the international community; and to expose our own military and intelligence personnel to the very same tactics and treatment. Mr. Speaker, every Member here believes that our nation must take decisive action to detect, disrupt, and, yes, eliminate terrorists who have no compunction about planning and participating in the mass killings of innocent men, women and children in an effort to advance their twisted aims. We can, we will and we must prevail in the war on terror. However, in the pursuit of those who seek to harm us, we must not sacrifice the very ideals that distinguish us from those who preach death and destruction. Yet, during the current Administration, we have seen the line blurred between legitimate, sanctioned interrogation tactics and torture. And, there is no doubt: Our international reputation has suffered and been stained as a result. The excesses at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo are well known, as are the Administrations belief that the Geneva Convention against torture is quaint. These incidents and others sully our great nations good reputation. And they allow our enemies to foment fear and stoke hatred. Requiring all intelligence agencies to comply with the Army Field Manual on Interrogations is an attempt by this Congress to repair the damage that has already been done. Furthermore, the techniques permitted by the Army Field Manual have been endorsed by a wide array of civilian and military officials as both effective and humane. Here, in fact, is what General David Petraeus wrote to Members of the Armed Forces in Iraq last May: Some may argue that we would be more effective if we sanctioned torture or other expedient methods to obtain information from the enemy. They would be wrong. Beyond the basic fact that such actions are illegal, history shows that they also are frequently neither useful nor necessary. General Petraeus continued: Our experience in applying interrogation standards laid out in the Army Field Manual . . . Shows that the techniques in the manual work effectively and humanely in eliciting information from detainees. Mr. Speaker, this is not a question of whether we must combat and defeat terrorists. Of course we must. However, we must never let it be said that when this generation of Americans was forced to confront evil that we succumbed to the tactics of the tyrant. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle: Vote to override this unjustified and deeply misguided veto.

Majority Leader Hoyer Statement
on Ethics Bill --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) spoke on the House Floor tonight in support of the ethics proposal that will create the Office of Congressional Ethics. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery: Mr. Speaker, I strongly support H. Res. 895, which embodies the thoughtful and hard work of the Special Task Force on Ethics Enforcement, chaired by Rep. Capuano. This is a difficult issue for many Members not because Members do not want a vigorous ethics enforcement process that stands up to public scrutiny, but because Members want to make sure that in this political institution the ethics process is fair. Since the late 1960s, the House has wrestled with the question of how best to police its own Members and uphold the highest standards of professional integrity in its Members without creating a system that can be easily manipulated for partisan reasons. Unfortunately, public faith in the House ethics process has eroded over the past 15 years in no small part due to the unseemly revelations that Members most notably former Reps. Duke Cunningham and Mark Foley -- abused the public trust placed in them by their constituents. And faith in our ethics process was further weakened by the perception that the House was institutionally incapable of disposing of charges against Members. That is changing. Since the start of the 110th Congress, there has been a commitment, expressed in both words and deeds, to rectify the publics declining faith in our ability to police ourselves. Last year, this body adopted the most sweeping ethics reforms in a generation, enacting earmark reform, a ban on lobbyist gifts and lobbyist-financed trips to members, and improved disclosure of contributions from registered lobbyists, to name just a few. Today, the House is poised to build on last years progress. The proposed Office of Congressional Ethics will serve as an effective complement, but not a substitute for, the House Standards of Official Conduct. I recognize that some Members are uncomfortable with the idea of another group having a formal role in the House ethics process. I believe Rep. Capuano has listened to their concerns with great care and sensitivity. And he has made changes to his resolution that address those concerns: Rep. Capuanos resolution has
stronger protections against leaks and disclosures. I have proudly served in this body for 27 years, and I am committed to the institutional and Constitutional prerogatives of this House. If I thought for one moment that H. Res. 895 imperiled the independence of the House or exposed Members to risks they do not already face, I would not support this resolution. But that is not the case. The proposed Ethics Office is a reasonable complement to the Standards Committee that will assist the latters performance and increase the public confidence. I urge my colleagues: Support this important resolution.

It happened after Iowa. It
happened again in February. People counted Hillary out. They
tried to say the race was over. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But you knew better. You sustained her with your support. You kept the campaign going with your contributions. You made more than a million phone calls. You believed in Hillary when she needed you the most. And in Texas and Ohio, she proved you right. Thanks to you, this race is neck-and-neck despite the Obama campaign outraising us by $20 million in February. Now we have six weeks to make our case in Pennsylvania. We know it's a fight. We know our opponent will outspend us. But we cannot let him have a head start in Pennsylvania, the critical next state. Hillary needs your support now -- today -- to make sure we're fighting on a level playing field. Contribute today to help Hillary win. +>> https://contribute.hillaryclinton.com/form.html?sc=1686&utm_source=1686&utm_medium=e&ta=0 You and I know Hillary can win. We have a strategy in place and a clear path to the nomination. All she needs is for you to keep standing up for her every single day. The road ahead is long, but your dedication will see us through. Back in February, you accomplished something truly amazing for Hillary, with 300,000 of you raising $35 million to fund her campaign. You kept us competitive even as the Obama campaign outraised us by $20 million -- an advantage they will use as they best can in Pennsylvania. Now we all face a few weeks before Pennsylvania and all the states that follow. Hillary has to build on her victories in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island. Can you help us sustain that energy over the next six weeks? Hillary needs your help more than ever. As she proved in Ohio and Texas, where she was outspent by millions but won anyway, you can put her over the top. So please make a contribution today to
help us win in Pennsylvania. There's no way Hillary would be in the position she is in today without your enthusiastic and dedicated support. I know it, she knows it, and we both tell everyone we know about everything you are doing to help her win. Sincerely, Bill Clinton |
When we won Iowa, the Clinton
campaign said it's not the number of states you win, it's "a
contest for delegates." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When we won a significant lead in delegates, they said it's really about which states you win. When we won South Carolina, they discounted the votes of African-Americans. When we won predominantly white, rural states like Idaho, Utah, and Nebraska, they said those didn't count because they won't be competitive in the general election. When we won in Washington State, Wisconsin,
and Missouri -- general election battlegrounds where polls show
Barack is a stronger candidate against John McCain -- the Clinton
campaign attacked those voters as "latte-sipping" elitists.
Clinton spin is that only certain states
really count. For all their attempts to discount, distract, and distort, we have won more delegates, more states, and more votes. Meanwhile, more than half of the votes that Senator Clinton has won so far have come from just five states. And in four of these five states, polls show that Barack would be a stronger general election candidate against McCain than Clinton. We're ready to take on John McCain. But
we also need to build operations in places like Pennsylvania,
Indiana, North Carolina, and Oregon that will hold their primaries
in April and May. Please make a donation of $25 right now:
With our overwhelming victory in the Mississippi primary yesterday, our lead in earned delegates is now wider than it was on March 3rd, before the contests in Ohio and Texas. And thanks to your help, we have dramatically increased our support among so-called "superdelegates" -- Governors, Members of Congress, and party officials who have a vote at the Democratic National Convention in August. As the number of remaining delegates dwindles, Hillary Clinton's path to the nomination seems less and less plausible. Now that Mississippi is behind us, we move on to the next ten contests. The Clinton campaign would like to focus your attention only on Pennsylvania -- a state in which they have already declared that they are "unbeatable." But Pennsylvania is only one of those 10 remaining contests, each important in terms of allocating delegates and ultimately deciding who our nominee will be. We have activated our volunteer networks in each of these upcoming battlegrounds. We're putting staff on the ground and building our organization everywhere. The key to victory is not who wins the states that the Clinton campaign thinks are important. The key to victory is realizing that every vote and every voter matters. Throughout this entire process, the Clinton campaign has cherry-picked states, diminished caucuses, and moved the goal posts to create a shifting, twisted rationale for why they should win the nomination despite winning fewer primaries, fewer states, fewer delegates, and fewer votes. We must stand up to the same-old Washington politics. Barack has won twice as many states, large and small, in every region of the country -- many by landslide margins. And this movement is expanding the base of the Democratic Party by attracting new voters in record numbers and bringing those who had lost hope back into the political process. Push back against the spin and help build
the operation to win more delegates in these upcoming contests:
Thank you for your support and for everything you've done to build a movement that is engaging voters and winning contests in every part of this country. David David Plouffe |

Responding to the President
on FISA --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning after President Bush spoke at the White House regarding the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act: The Presidents comments this morning regarding new House legislation to modernize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act demonstrate an almost complete misreading of this important bill. In fact, this bill is the product of weeks of negotiations negotiations which the White House and Congressional Republicans refused to engage in and it marries the best of the House and Senate-passed FISA bills. This legislation provides our intelligence professionals with all the tools they need to protect our nation, while also protecting the rights and values that make us proud to be Americans. The White House insistence that Congress provide telecommunications companies that participated in the Presidents surveillance program with blanket immunity is neither justified nor in keeping with our nations legal tradition. In essence, the President is asking Congress to immunize companies for their conduct despite the fact that Congress is not sure what conduct it would be immunizing, and despite the fact that serious questions have been raised about the legality of the surveillance program. Congress owes the American people more than blind obeisance to the Executive Branch. This House bill would allow telecommunications companies which participated in the Presidents surveillance program to avail themselves of the legal defenses that currently exist, without providing blanket immunity. This approach is reasonable, thoughtful and appropriate. House Democrats have every intention of passing this legislation and moving the process forward.

Statement on the Democratic
Budget Resolution --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) spoke this afternoon in support of the Democratic Budget Resolution, which passed the House today. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery: Mr. Speaker, let me first thank the Chairman of the Budget Committee, John Spratt of South Carolina, for all of his hard work, patience and intelligence in producing this Democratic Budget Resolution which is nothing less than a blueprint of our values and priorities. Let me also thank my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus and Progressive Caucus for offering their important budget alternatives alternatives that reflect our shared commitment to the American people and a stronger America. Now, before I discuss what I believe to be the vastly superior and realistic Democratic budget, let me briefly address the Republican budget substitute that we are now debating. I both like and respect the gentleman from Wisconsin, the Ranking Member on the Budget Committee, Mr. Ryan. He is a thoughtful, diligent young Member. And, I believe that were it up to him, he might actually try to implement the provisions in the Republican budget substitute. But the problem, of course, is that he would be fighting a lonely, losing, untenable battle. This we know: Many, many Republicans would not support the deep, draconian cuts to domestic programs called for in their own budget. The fact is, this Republican budget only reaches balance in 2012 by slashing funding for mandatory programs by $412 billion. This Republican budget would cut Medicare and safety-net programs, Furthermore, the Republican budget implies very deep cuts in discretionary programs, devastating public health, education, safety net and infrastructure programs. Mr. Speaker, this Republican budget fails to reflect the values and priorities of the American people. In contrast, the Democratic budget continues to move our nation in a new direction and to clean up the fiscal train wreck caused by failed Republican economic policies over the last seven years. Remember, in just 86 months, Republicans have turned projected budget surpluses into record deficits including a projected $386 billion this year and another $340 billion next year and added more than $3 trillion to the national debt, which today stands at $9 trillion. Our Democratic budget restores fiscal responsibility, adhering to pay-as-you-go budget rules and bringing the federal budget back to balance by 2012. It rejects the drastic funding cuts in the Republican substitute and the Presidents budget which includes cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, state and local law enforcement programs, and environmental protection. It strengthens our economy, providing crucial funding for our innovation agenda, efficient and renewable energy programs, education, and infrastructure. It provides tax relief for hard working Americans, including a reconciliation instruction that provides offsets for a new one-year patch of the Alternative Minimum Tax. And, our Democratic budget makes America safer, providing for a robust defense, boosting homeland security funding, and rejecting the Presidents cuts to first responder programs. This is a budget that we can be proud of. And, it stands in stark contrast to the extraordinarily irresponsible fiscal policies of the current Administration and former Republican majorities in Congress. I urge all of my colleagues: Vote for fiscal responsibility, and a bright future for our children. Vote for the budget that reflects our values and meets the needs of the American people. Vote for this Democratic budget.

Majority Leader Hoyers
Statement After House Holds Secret Session --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight after the House held a secret session to discuss information relevant to the debate on legislation to modernize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA): I did not hear any new information tonight that dissuades me from my very strong belief that the FISA bill House Democrats have produced and which the House will vote on tomorrow is a reasonable, thoughtful, appropriate piece of legislation that will ensure that the intelligence community has all the tools it needs to protect our nation, while also respecting the Constitutional protections that Americans rightfully feel are so important. Tomorrow, I will urge members on both sides of the aisle to vote for this legislation.

Statement on the FISA Amendments
Act --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) spoke on the House Floor today in support of the FISA Amendments Act. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery: Mr. Speaker, let me first say that every single Member of this body wants to enable our intelligence community to detect, disrupt and eliminate terrorists who have no compunction about planning and participating in the mass killings of innocent men, women and children. We can and we will prevail in the war on terror. However, victory against those who preach death and destruction does not require the abandonment of the ideals and principles upon which our nation was founded. Our basic duties as Members of Congress protecting the American people, while protecting the values that define us as Americans are not mutually exclusive. Indeed, they can be and they must be mutually reinforcing. The legislation we consider today the FISA Amendments Act accomplishes these goals. And, I am proud to support it. This bill is a compromise taking the strengths of the Senate-passed bill and marrying them with the best of the RESTORE Act, which this House passed last November. Regrettably, the White House and Congressional Republicans refused to accept our offer to sit down at the negotiating table and work out our differences. Nonetheless, this bill represents a good-faith effort to address many of the legitimate concerns that have been raised about this modernization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Among other things, this bill makes clear that no order is required for surveillance of foreign-to-foreign communications. It provides that except in emergencies the executive branch may not begin surveillance unless the FISA Court has approved targeting and minimization procedures designed to protect Americans. It explicitly authorizes the FISA Court to assess whether targeting and minimization procedures are being complied with. It prevents so-called reverse targeting. That is, it bars the targeting of a person reasonably believed to be outside the United States for the purpose of targeting a particular, known person reasonably believed to be in the United States. It clarifies that FISA is the exclusive means of conducting surveillance in the United States for foreign intelligence purposes. And wisely, this bill rejects the Administrations demand that Congress grant blanket, retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies that assisted with the Presidents warrantless surveillance program. Instead, the bill provides these companies with a process to present their defenses in secure proceedings in federal district court without the Administration using the state secrets privilege to block those defenses from being raised. Let me remind my colleagues of the statement by Judge Vaughn Walker, the chief judge of the Northern District of California, in a case involving AT&Ts participation in this warrantless program. Judge Walker, a Republican appointee, wrote: AT&T cannot seriously contend that a reasonable entity in its position could have believed that the alleged domestic dragnet was legal. I submit that a reasonable responsible Congress would not seek to immunize conduct without knowing what conduct or misconduct it is immunizing. Finally, this bill includes a sunset of December 31, 2009, so that we can revisit this critical national security legislation and implement lessons learned by the bipartisan Commission which is also proposed in this bill. Let me close by saying, I deeply regret that the Administration and some Members on the other side of the aisle have misrepresented the provisions and the purpose of this bill. If they believed their own rhetoric that the expiration of the Protect America Act endangered our national security then they must explain why they opposed a temporary extension of that act. Mr. Speaker, it is clear that the current Administration wants to circumvent and neuter the FISA Court while trying to stampede this Congress into passing the Senate bill. This Congress owes the American people more than blind obeisance to the executive branch. This is a reasonable, thoughtful bill. I urge all of my colleagues to support it.

Administrations Economic
Performance Dismal --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Bush spoke at the Economic Club of New York: Over the last seven years, the Bush Administration has pursued the most reckless fiscal policies in American history, creating record deficits and spiraling debt that threatens our long-term national and economic security. And now, with millions of American families struggling to make ends meet, the President seems focused only on one thing: making tax cuts that are skewed toward the wealthiest taxpayers in America permanent, even though those tax cuts to not expire until the end of 2010. With household incomes down, poverty up, college costs exploding, the number of uninsured increasing by 7 million, and gas prices more than doubling, the President seems mostly concerned with solidifying his legacy for fiscal irresponsibility. In sharp contrast, Democrats will continue to work to restore fiscal responsibility, to strengthen our economy through middle-class tax relief and strategic investments in education and infrastructure, and to protect our national security.

Hoyer, Conyers, Reyes Applaud
House Passage --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD), House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes applauded todays passage of the FISA Amendments Act, which passed the House 213-197. I am proud that the House passed thoughtful, appropriate legislation today that addresses the needs of the intelligence community without abandoning the ideals and principles upon which our nation was founded, Hoyer said. I look forward to continued discussions with the Senate and an expedient resolution on a final product. I hope our Republican colleagues will finally join us at the negotiating table, so we can complete work on this critical legislation. I applaud my colleagues for supporting a bill that is sensible and responsible policy and strikes the appropriate balance between the governments need to protect our citizens from foreign attack, and our citizens right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, Conyers said. I look forward to sending a bill to the President's desk that maintains this very important balance and I encourage the President to support our efforts. The U.S. House today passed responsible legislation that arms our intelligence community with powerful new tools to keep us safe and restores essential constitutional protections for Americans that were sharply eroded when the President signed the Protect America Act into law last August, said Reyes. We have put the security of Americans first and foremost. We will continue to work to move this forward in a manner that provides for both our nations security and liberty. ### |

After five years of war, send
a powerful message -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two weeks ago, 10,000 Republicans in Ohio's 10th Congressional District launched a different kind of strike - changing their party affiliation to vote in a Democratic primary election fueled by an unscrupulous "Dump Dennis" campaign targeting the strongest, most vocal, and most consistent critic of George Bush's policies, foreign and domestic: U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich. Dennis survived the challenge and won the primary, but he needs your help to retain that Congressional seat and continue speaking out on your behalf. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_sKw5OcuhA You can send a powerful message to the Bush Administration, to the Republican leadership, to those thousands of "Dump Dennis" Republicans, to the nation and to the world by making a contribution today to "Keep Dennis." http://kucinich.us/contribute.html If you can contribute $10, $20, $100, or more by midnight Wednesday, March 19th, you'll be letting everyone know where you stand and who you want standing up for you in the U.S. Congress. And please, watch this previous video message from Dennis to better understand what's at stake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WTEhYzEuzs Your support is absolutely vital. Please contribute whatever you can to support the one voice in Congress you can always count on to be your voice: Congressman Dennis Kucinich. http://kucinich.us/contribute.html Thank you, |

A year ago, no one would have
guessed our party's -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Democrats are voting in larger numbers than anyone expected, and this record turnout shows incredible promise for the general election ahead of us. But we also have a problem. John McCain has already sewn up the Republican nomination, and he's free to raise money and campaign all across the country. The past few days, he's taken his campaign on a world tour at taxpayer expense. This weekend, he made a "surprise" stop in Iraq, trying to re-frame five years of steadfast support for George Bush's war with photo ops and press releases. We can't afford to wait for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama to win the Democratic nomination -- they're focused on winning the nomination while John McCain is focused on winning the White House. We are the only organization that can look beyond the primaries and lay the groundwork for Hillary or Barack to inherit if they win. They can't run against John McCain yet, but we can do it for them. I need you to make a donation now so that we can continue our campaign against John McCain. Hillary or Barack will need the infrastructure in place as soon as they're nominated: http://www.democrats.org/LookingAhead Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are generating the sort of passion this country hasn't seen in a long time. Both of them are bringing new Democrats into the process -- and reactivating old ones who haven't voted in years. In Texas, 2.8 million Democratic ballots were cast in our Party's primary. That's more votes than Al Gore or John Kerry received in Texas in the past two general elections. Now states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Oregon, and Kentucky will have their chance to impact the presidential nomination process. That's more states that Barack or Hillary may never have visited if not for the enthusiasm everyone has for them. It's also more states where voters will show up in record numbers for the primary and general elections. The energy we're seeing across the country
is what the 50-State Strategy is all about: giving Democrats
a party that can compete in areas we've continually ignored in
past elections. It's not easy, and it's not cheap, but it's the
best way for our party to win. I need you to contribute right now so Hillary or Barack can make it to the White House in November: http://www.democrats.org/LookingAhead It's clear that there are benefits to a healthy, contested primary. But right now, John McCain thinks he can get a free pass while our campaigns are focused on each other. You and I aren't going to let John McCain get ahead -- and we're going to do that by making sure Americans hear the truth about him. From the war in Iraq and tax cuts for corporate special interests, McCain has put forth an astonishingly simple agenda: continue the Bush Administration's failed policies for another four years. It's not just the Iraq War and tax breaks for the wealthy where John McCain falls in line with President Bush. Even on the unconventional issues that gave John McCain his "maverick" reputation, he has traded his integrity for a chance at the presidency. This may not be news to you, but too many Americans don't know the facts about the Republican candidate for president, and Hillary or Barack can't get started just yet. Make a donation today and support our efforts to take him head-on and lay the groundwork for them: http://www.democrats.org/LookingAhead Thank you, |

When Michelle and I decided
to enter this race more than a year ago, one of our hopes was
to bring people back into the political process. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like so many Americans, we'd been exhausted and frustrated by the slash-and-burn politics that had come to dominate our elections. Smallness and pettiness were the rule, not the exception. And it seemed like every day, more and more Americans were tuning out their democracy. This election, we're seeing something different. As we enter the final stretch of elections, we have a unique opportunity to shape the outcome -- and the outcome of elections up and down the ballot this November. The last day to register new voters in Pennsylvania is March 24th. In North Carolina and Indiana, it's in early April. And in West Virginia and Kentucky, the voter registration deadline is a little more than a month from today. So today we're launching a national initiative
to register an unprecedented number of voters in each of the
upcoming states. Learn more about what you can do to bring
as many voters as possible into the political process: Young voters have shaped this presidential
primary like no other. Statistics show that if we can get young people to vote Democratic now, they are far more likely to vote regularly -- and vote for Democrats -- throughout their lives. So by getting involved and helping to register voters, you're not just increasing the number of voters in this election. You're increasing the number of people who will be engaged Democratic voters for the rest of their lives. Sign up to help bring More Voices into
the Democratic primary today: More than fifteen years ago, after I finished
law school, I came back to Chicago and led a voter registration
drive on the South Side. In the end, we made a real difference in Illinois. Our team registered more than 150,000 new voters, not only impacting local elections, but helping to shift the balance in state and national races as well. Illinois went from voting Republican in 1988 to Democratic in 1992. That lesson has informed how we've run
this campaign. And now we have an unbelievable opportunity to
apply it on a massive scale. That's not just good for presidential candidates; it's good for Democrats up and down the ticket. More engaged, committed Democratic voters in the primaries means more votes this November in all fifty states -- from competitive statewide races to state legislative and city council seats everywhere. You can make a difference right now. Encourage someone to register in time to participate in the presidential race in their state. Learn more and get involved here: http://my.barackobama.com/morevoices Thanks for all your hard work, P.S. -- Here's an example of how you can
get involved right now. Our team has created an online tool that provides all the information you need to make calls from home. Get started now: |

Hoyer Statement on the Iraq
War --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today honoring the sacrifice and patriotism of our men and women in uniform serving in Iraq and noting the beginning of the sixth year of war in that nation: As the war in Iraq enters its sixth year on Wednesday, two things are abundantly clear. First, our brave men and women in uniform have done everything that our nation has asked of them, and they have performed their mission with courage, skill and honor. Nearly 4,000 American soldiers have given the ultimate measure of sacrifice in this war, and 30,000 have been injured. This day and every day, we honor the memory of those who have been lost, and pray for the recovery of those who have been injured, as well as the safe return home of our troops who are still deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today the fifth anniversary of the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom also is a time to acknowledge that the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform has not been matched with a strategy for success by the Bush Administration, which has made egregious misjudgments throughout this war from the decision to deploy too few troops at the outset, to the costs that would be borne by the American taxpayer, to the willingness of Iraqi officials to make the hard decisions that are critical to their nations future. Just last week, for example, General Petraeus acknowledged that Iraqi leaders have failed to make adequate progress toward resolving their political differences or in the provision of basic public services. In the meantime, our troops and our nation are being forced to pay a steep price for Iraqi inaction and the Presidents failing stay-the-course policy. The American people support and our national security interests demand a new direction in Iraq a war that has cost our nation dearly, degraded our military readiness, diverted resources from the global fight against terrorism, and harmed our reputation in the world. Democrats are committed to a responsible, phased redeployment of our troops from Iraq. We believe it is long past time that the Iraqi government begin to take responsibility for the stability and security of its own country.

Five years ago today, President
George W. Bush launched a war that should never have been authorized
based on faulty premises and bad intelligence. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This war has now lasted longer than World War I, World War II, or the Civil War. Nearly four thousand Americans have given their lives. Thousands more have been wounded. Even under the best-case scenarios, this war will cost American taxpayers well over a trillion dollars. And where are we for all of this sacrifice? We are less safe and less able to shape events abroad. We are divided at home, and our alliances around the world have been strained. The threats of a new century have roiled the waters of peace and stability, and yet America remains anchored in Iraq. I am running for President because it's time to turn the page on a failed ideology and a fundamentally flawed political strategy, so that we can make pragmatic judgments to keep our country safe. That's what I did when I stood up and opposed this war from the start and said that we needed to finish the fight against al Qaeda. And that's what I'll do as President of the United States. Please take a few minutes to read my strategy for ending the war in Iraq and making America safer. I hope you will sign on and show your support: http://my.barackobama.com/fiveyearslater Senator Clinton says that she and Senator
McCain have passed a "Commander-in-Chief test" -- not
because of the judgments they've made, but because of the years
they've spent in Washington. It is time to have a debate with Senator McCain about the future of our national security. And the way to win that debate and keep America safe is to offer a clear contrast -- a clean break from the failed policies and politics of the past. Nowhere is that break more badly needed than in Iraq. Join me in supporting an end to this war
and a plan for a safer America: The judgment that matters most on Iraq -- and on any decision to deploy military force -- is the judgment made first. If you believe we are fighting the right war, then the problems we face are purely tactical in nature. That is what Senator McCain wants to discuss -- tactics. What he and the Administration have failed to present is an overarching strategy: how the war in Iraq enhances our long-term security, or will in the future. That's why this Administration cannot answer the simple question posed by Senator John Warner in hearings last year: Are we safer because of this war? And that is why Senator McCain can argue -- as he did last year -- that we couldn't leave Iraq because violence was up, and then argue this year that we can't leave Iraq because violence is down. When you have no overarching strategy, there is no clear definition of success. Success comes to be defined as the ability to maintain a flawed policy indefinitely. Here is the truth: fighting a war without end will not force the Iraqis to take responsibility for their own future. And fighting in a war without end will not make the American people safer. When I am Commander-in-Chief, I will set a new goal on Day One: I will end this war. Not because politics compels it. Not because our troops cannot bear the burden -- as heavy as it is. But because it is the right thing to do for our national security, and it will ultimately make us safer. Show your support for a clear strategy
to end the war in Iraq and focus our national security efforts
on making America safer: Here are the core elements of my strategy to address our critical national security challenges in the 21st century: End the war in Iraq, removing our troops at a pace of 1 to 2 combat brigades per month; Finally finish the fight against the Taliban, root out al Qaeda and invest in the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan, while making aid to the Pakistani government conditional; Act aggressively to stop nuclear proliferation and to secure all loose nuclear materials around the world; Double our foreign assistance to cut extreme
poverty in half; Renew American diplomacy by talking to
our adversaries as well as our friends; increasing the size of
the Foreign Service and the Peace Corps; and creating an America's
Voice Corps. We are at a defining moment in our history. This must be the election when America
comes together behind a common purpose on behalf of our security
and our values. Thank you, |

Senator Clinton and Senator
McCain are reading from the same political playbook as they attack
Barack on foreign policy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- They have both criticized Barack's commitment to act against top al Qaeda terrorists if others can't or won't act. And they have both dismissed his call for renewed diplomacy as naïve while mistakenly standing behind George Bush's policy of non-engagement that just isn't working. But most of all -- after five years of overwhelming evidence that we are less safe, less able to shape events abroad, and more divided at home -- Senator Clinton and Senator McCain are failing to address the consequences of a war they both supported that should have never been authorized and never been waged. We need a leader who had the judgment to oppose this war before it began and who has a clear plan to end it. But Barack is facing a two-front battle
against Senator Clinton and Senator McCain. Make a donation of
$25 to support this campaign today: We knew at the beginning of this campaign that we'd be up against the full force of the conventional thinking that grips Washington. But no one could have imagined it would go on this long, or that we'd have to fight this battle on two fronts at the same time. Senator Clinton's campaign, with her chances of winning dwindling and our delegate lead even larger than it was before her so-called comeback on March 4th, has adopted a "kitchen-sink" strategy to throw everything they can at us. Her campaign has made it clear they will do and say anything to win this nomination. Senator McCain, now the presumptive Republican nominee, is already running his general election campaign. He's so eager to justify another 100 years of war in Iraq and drum up conflict with Iran that he and his campaign have been making sloppy and woefully false assertions about links between Iran and al Qaeda in Iraq. We've got to take on both Senator Clinton and Senator McCain at the same time. Your support now is more important than
ever -- please make a donation of $25: Yesterday, Barack laid out a clear plan to make America more secure and end the war in Iraq. Today, he laid out the economic costs of the war that Senator Clinton and Senator McCain supported. In both speeches -- and in his speech on race in America earlier this week -- Barack Obama demonstrated that he is the candidate with the courage and judgment to tackle the challenges we face. The choice Americans have in this election is clear -- and your support right now sends a message to those who support the status quo that it is time for a new kind of leadership. Please do what you can to help fight this
two-front battle for change: Thank you, |

As much as I enjoy talking
to you by email, there are times in this campaign when I wish
you and I could sit down right next to one another and just talk.
This is one of those moments. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Despite the spirited efforts of our online community, we are facing a serious financial disadvantage against the Obama campaign. In February alone, they were able to spend $10 million more than we were. If we were talking together right now, here's what I would tell you. At this critical moment, our campaign needs a public show of strength that only you can provide. What you do right now could determine the outcome of Pennsylvania and beyond. Will you act immediately to help us close the fundraising gap by making a contribution? Your action is vital to our chances for victory. We need a massive show of support by midnight
Saturday. Contribute now to help us win in Pennsylvania and beyond. I am seeing incredible enthusiasm for our campaign and our ideas from people across Pennsylvania. I know that on a level playing field, you and I will be successful, just as we were in Texas, Ohio, and other states big and small across the nation. But only an immediate infusion of financial support from you and others like you can give my campaign the resources needed to turn our hard-earned political momentum into victory in Pennsylvania and beyond. We need to raise every dollar we can by
midnight Saturday. Contribute now to make a difference. All through this remarkable experience, the success of our campaign has been as much in your hands as it is in mine. And that has never been more true than it is right now. I'm really counting on hearing from you. Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton |

This morning Governor Bill
Richardson endorsed Barack Obama's candidacy for president. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Governor Richardson called for a new generation of leadership that would bring us together here at home and strengthen our relationships with our allies abroad. He praised Barack's speech on race in America this week as an example of courageous, thoughtful, and inspiring leadership. He thanked Barack for speaking to us as adults, and reminding us that cynicism is not realism, and that hope is not folly. Governor Richardson also said Barack would be an outstanding Commander-in-Chief. He recognized Barack's opposition to the Iraq war before it began, and emphasized the need for a President that understands the national security challenges facing America. Barack talked earlier this
week about bridging divides and bringing people together to solve
our common problems. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When Barack came back to Chicago after
law school, he led a voter registration drive to attract people
to the political process. http://my.barackobama.com/morevoicesvideo Registering voters and bringing more voices into the political process is what this campaign is all about. In the ten contests left in this race, we have an opportunity to build a base of support that will lead Democrats to victory up and down the ballot in November. But more importantly, we have the chance to transform our party and our politics. Our next opportunity is Pennsylvania. By bringing in new voters and encouraging voters who have gotten fed up to get involved again, we can move beyond the divisive and petty tactics that have dominated our politics for far too long. We can send a message that we're ready for something new -- something positive that brings us together around a shared goal of a better future for all Americans. You can help build our movement and create a lasting change in our party and in our country. Start making calls for this historic drive
to register Pennsylvania voters: One of the special things about this campaign is that it's inspired people from all walks of life to take action. Supporters are organizing in their neighborhoods and traveling across the country to help register voters. People like you are making calls to crucial states and talking to potential voters about a new kind of leadership and a new kind of politics. There are ten contests left in this race, and we can set the tone for all of them in Pennsylvania. Your voice can make a difference in how they turn out. You can have an important impact on the direction of the Democratic Party and politics in this country. Be a voice for change and bring more voices
into the political process: Thank you for everything you're doing, |

So? ... A Note from Michael
Moore -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4,000 dead. Unofficial estimates are that there may be up to 100,000 wounded, injured, or mentally ruined by this war. And there could be up to a million Iraqi dead. We will pay the consequences of this for a long, long time. God will keep blessing America. And where is Darth Vader in all this? A reporter from ABC News this week told Dick Cheney, in regards to Iraq, "two-thirds of Americans say it's not worth fighting." Cheney cut her off with a one word answer: "So?" "So?" As in, "So what?"
As in, "F*** you. I could care less." The Democrats have had the power to literally pull the plug on this war for the past 15 months -- and they have refused to do so. What are we to do about that? Continue to sink into our despair? Or get creative? Real creative. I know there are many of you reading this who have the chutzpah and ingenuity to confront your local congressperson. Will you? For me? Cheney spent Wednesday, the 5th anniversary of the war, not mourning the dead he killed, but fishing off the Sultan of Oman's royal yacht. So? Ask your favorite Republican what they think of that. The Founding Fathers would never have uttered the presumptuous words, "God Bless America." That, to them, sounded like a command instead of a request, and one doesn't command God, even if they are America. In fact, they were worried God would punish America. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington feared that God would react unfavorably against his soldiers for the way they were behaving. John Adams wondered if God might punish America and cause it to lose the war, just to prove His point that America was not worthy. They and the others believed it would be arrogant on their part to assume that God would single out America for a blessing. What a long road we have traveled since then. I see that Frontline on PBS this week has a documentary called "Bush's War." That's what I've been calling it for a long time. It's not the "Iraq War." Iraq did nothing. Iraq didn't plan 9/11. It didn't have weapons of mass destruction. It DID have movie theaters and bars and women wearing what they wanted and a significant Christian population and one of the few Arab capitals with an open synagogue. But that's all gone now. Show a movie and
you'll be shot in the head. Over a hundred women have been randomly
executed for not wearing a scarf. I'm happy, as a blessed American,
that I had a hand in all this. I just paid my taxes, so that
means I helped to pay for this freedom we've brought to Baghdad.
So? Will God bless me? God help America. Please. |

Too many political fundraisers
are hosted by Washington lobbyists and filled with representatives
of special interests. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our funding comes from a movement of more than one million people giving whatever they can afford -- even $5 -- and Barack wants to sit down with supporters like you. If you've ever thought about making a donation to join our campaign, now is the time. In the next week, four supporters will be selected for a different kind of fundraising dinner. And we're reserving two of those seats for new donors like you. Make a donation in any amount between now
and 11:59 pm EDT on Monday, March 31st, and you could join Barack
and three other supporters for an intimate dinner for five: Our movement is changing the way campaigns are funded. This campaign has never taken contributions from Washington lobbyists or political action committees. More than one million donors have demonstrated that this election is about more than a candidate -- it's about each of us having a personal stake in the future of American politics. This dinner is an opportunity for you to sit down with Barack and your fellow supporters and talk about the issues that matter to you. Get the kind of treatment other politicians
reserve for special interests. Make a donation in the next week,
and you could share your story and your ideas with Barack in
person: With every donation, we're building a movement to change American politics. Help the movement grow, and own a piece of this campaign today. Thanks for your support, |
You and I both want Hillary
to win. So let me be frank about the challenge our campaign faces
right now. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It couldn't be any simpler than this: we
cannot be competitive politically unless we are competitive financially
-- and right now we are at a financial disadvantage. The Obama
campaign is already spending more than $1 million on an aggressive
ad buy in Pennsylvania. For us to win, we have to: Any donation, even as little as $5, can make a difference in this campaign. If you haven't given online yet, now is the time. Contribute today to help Hillary win. Just like Hillary, you've worked hard to get us this far. We cannot let up our efforts now and let this race be decided by a shortfall of funds. One thing I know for sure about Hillary -- if we give her the support she needs, she will never let us down, not as a candidate and not as president. She'll work just as hard for you in the White House as she is on the campaign trail. Let's match Hillary's efforts with our
own. Contribute to help us raise as much as we can by midnight
tonight. I appreciate everything you are doing for Hillary so much. Let's keep working and winning. Sincerely, Bill Clinton |

I'm seeing incredible enthusiasm as I travel across Pennsylvania and other states with upcoming contests. We've got momentum at our backs, but a big task ahead of us. The Obama campaign is in the middle of a $3 million ad blitz in Pennsylvania, and we've got to do everything we can to overcome their fundraising advantage. Then we face competitive contests in Indiana, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, and Puerto Rico -- and we are already getting started in those states. Hoyer Statement on Social
Security --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON - House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today regarding the annual report by the trustees for Social Security and Medicare. That report, which was released today, showed that the Social Security trust fund will remain solvent until 2041 and Medicare will remain solvent until 2019: Todays report is yet another reminder that these two critical programs Social Security and Medicare face real long-term challenges that must be addressed in a bipartisan way. Unfortunately, the fiscally reckless policies pursued by the current Administration over the last seven years will make it much more difficult to tackle this important issue, while the looming retirement of the baby boom generation increases the urgency. In fact, the Democratic Majority in the House is committed to ensuring that the Medicare program continues to function effectively for beneficiaries, providers and taxpayers well into the future. That is why the House passed reforms as part of the Childrens Health and Medicare Protection Act that would have extended Medicare solvency by two years. I believe that we must get serious about addressing the long-term challenges to Social Security and Medicare. To that end, we must begin to lay the foundation for bipartisan action on this issue in the next Congress, and we must have an open, honest debate about the best way to strengthen the entitlement programs that millions of Americans count on.

Refusing money from PACs and
Washington lobbyists -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We've rejected the traditional Washington
fundraising strategy -- including countless dinners hosted by
lobbyists -- and put our trust in millions of Americans owning
a piece of this campaign. This campaign is different, and I'm looking forward to supporters like you joining me for a different kind of fundraising dinner. If you make a donation in any amount between

I had a fantastic government teacher in high school who really opened my eyes to a lot of things. I haven't always voted Democratic, but I wanted to vote for someone who spoke to me personally. Now my kids are doing well in school, but I'm praying for scholarships. I have no savings, and I don't know how I'm going to put them through college. I have never contributed to a political
candidate before, but I have started an organizing group in my
very Republican county. My children are very active in their
support, and I will do all I can to show my neighbors that together,
YES WE CAN." If you make a donation by 11:59 pm EDT
on Monday, March 31st, you could join us: We'll pay for your trip and the meal -- all you need to bring is your story and your ideas about how to make this a better country for all Americans. Small donations from ordinary Americans have set our campaign apart and allowed us to reject the influence of Washington lobbyists and special interest groups. Not only is your support the key to our success, it's essential to reclaiming a government that is of the people, by the people, and for the people. I hope you will make a donation now to
participate in this opportunity. Own a part of this campaign

Join Barack for an intimate
dinner for five -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the very beginning of this campaign, Barack has rejected contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs. Instead, he has relied on grassroots donors like you to support this campaign, and this is not the first time he's invited you to join him for an intimate dinner for five. Get a glimpse of a previous dinner with Barack, and make a donation before 11:59 p.m. EDT on March 31st. You could join Barack and three other guests for an evening of good food and good conversation: https://donate.barackobama.com/dinner One of the folks in that video is Michael Griffith, a miner from Fernley, Nevada -- he was one of Barack's guests at a dinner last year. We gave him a call this week and asked him to talk about the experience so that we could share it with you. Here's what he had to say about it: "It was an awesome experience -- Barack spent hours talking to us, and at the dinner table he was just like any other guy. It really felt like somebody invited friends over for dinner and good conversation. My dad is a paralyzed vet, and his health
care costs are huge, so I talked to the Senator about how he
planned to provide for our veterans. He gave a thoughtful, detailed
answer, and I could tell that taking care of our veterans was
a big concern to him. Ever since the dinner, I've remained active in the campaign. I was the precinct captain for my neighborhood here in Fernley, Nevada, and we won our caucus. I also went to the county convention, and we won there too. I'm grateful to have been a part of this, because I know that beyond winning an election, we're also changing the way politics works in this country." People like Michael are transforming politics in this country -- not just by changing the way campaigns are funded, but by getting involved on a grassroots level and working for change in their communities. While Senator Clinton and Senator McCain have accepted millions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs, this campaign has relied on more than a million individual donors giving only what they can afford. Just last month, more than 90% of the donations to Obama for America were for $100 or less. If you make a donation in any amount between now and 11:59 pm EDT on Monday, March 31st, you could join Barack and three other supporters for dinner and a conversation about the issues that matter most to you. Make a donation and share your story, and
you could join Barack for an intimate dinner for five: Thank you for your support, |
Have you noticed the pattern?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Every time our campaign demonstrates its strength and resilience, people start to suggest we should end our pursuit of the Democratic nomination. Those anxious to force us to the sidelines aren't doing it because they think we're going to lose the upcoming primaries. The fact is, they're reading the same polls we are, and they know we are in a position to win. In three days, we're facing a critical March filing deadline -- another chance to show the strength of our campaign. Let's take these three days to make something absolutely clear: we aren't going to simply step aside. You and I are going to keep fighting for what we believe in, and together, we're going to win. Anything you can give now will make a difference. Even a contribution as little as $5 will have an impact. Contribute $5 today to help us raise $3
million by the March filing deadline at midnight Monday. We did it in New Hampshire, we did it on February 5, and we did it again this month in Texas and Ohio. With the March filing deadline, we have the chance to show our strength again. This is a crucial test as we approach the next big primary in Pennsylvania and the contests that follow. Millions of voters are still waiting to have their say. Let's make sure they have a chance to be heard. Contribute $5 today to help us raise $3
million by the March filing deadline at midnight Monday. At times like this, with everything on the line, it means so much to me to know that I can rely on you to meet the challenges we face head-on. Thank you for everything,

John McCain is raising money
and campaigning across the country -- he's looking at the White
House. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are also raising money and campaigning across the country -- but they're still looking at the nomination. Hillary and Barack can't build an organization to take on John McCain directly yet, but we can. And we have to -- it's our responsibility as Democrats to make sure we're prepared. I need you to make a contribution now so
we can make sure John McCain doesn't get a free ride -- Americans
everywhere need to know the truth, and we're going to make sure
they get it. Over the past three years, you've invested heavily in our 50-State Strategy. We put resources in all 50 states, committing to make sure each state has the resources and infrastructure to compete at every level. We saw the results from this strategy in 2005, 2006, and 2007. And, with your help, it will help us take back the White House in 2008. Why? The Republican Party is in trouble. Just read what the Web site Politico reported... At a time when the GOP presidential nominee will need more assistance than ever, a number of state Republican parties are struggling through troubled times, suffering from internal strife, poor fundraising, onerous debt, scandal or voting trends that are conspiring to relegate the local branches of the party to near-irrelevance. In some of the largest, smallest, reddest and bluest states in the nation, many state Republican organizations are still reeling in the aftermath of the devastating 2006 election cycle, raising questions about how much grassroots help the state parties will be able to deliver to presumptive GOP nominee John McCain. We've worn them down, but we can't be complacent -- we've seen what they will do to win. We can't let up -- every day that goes by where we don't answer John McCain's attacks means another opportunity missed, and it erases the work we've done so far. Make a donation today and support our efforts
to help elect Hillary or Barack. We're fighting John McCain so
he doesn't get ahead. We can't allow John McCain to crisscross the country, fooling the American people with his "more of the same" agenda. Your donation today helps us take him head-on everywhere. Thank you, |

Here's the most important
thing you need to know about this race: it's neck-and-neck. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Only 130 delegates separate Hillary from Senator Obama -- and that's not counting Florida and Michigan. The difference in popular vote is less than 1 percent, and millions of voters have yet to make their voices heard. This election should be about their choice. But now we're hearing people -- elected officials, party members, and Obama campaign surrogates -- call for Hillary to pull out. With the race this close, it sure doesn't make sense to me that she'd leave now -- does it make sense to you? There's no better way to tell Hillary that you support her staying in than to make a contribution to her campaign -- and no better time to contribute than right now. If you've never donated online before, now is the time to do it. Even as little as $5 can make a difference. We're facing a big deadline on Monday. Our opponents and the media will scrutinize our fundraising reports and look for any sign of weakness. By making a contribution today, you can help make sure we show nothing but strength. Contribute $5 by our midnight Monday deadline to help us show our strength. +>> https://contribute.hillaryclinton.com/form.html?sc=1732&utm_source=1732&utm_medium=e&ta=zep3ds I know that Hillary never forgets exactly why she is running. Her commitment to the people of this country never wavers. At this critical moment, all of us supporting Hillary must make sure we are just as focused as she is. With all the talk of the state of the race, all the people telling her she should just give up, you and I must make sure she has everything she needs to stay in this race. With our big fundraising deadline coming up midnight Monday, we need to show the critics and the doubters that this campaign is running full steam ahead with the determination to win. Contribute $5 now to help us reach our
$3 million goal by midnight Monday. My family isn't big on quitting. Hillary's in this race to win, and she's in it thanks to you. Sincerely,
Bill Clinton |

Clinton rejects calls to quit
Democratic race -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (CNN) Sen. Hillary Clinton on Saturday rejected calls by supporters of rival candidate Barack Obama to quit the Democratic presidential race, and Obama said Clinton should remain in race "as long as she wants." "The more people get a chance to vote, the better it is for our democracy," the New York senator and former first lady told supporters at a rally in Indiana, which holds a May 6 primary. "There are some folks saying we ought to stop these elections," she said. "I didn't think we believed that in America. I thought we of all people knew how important it was to give everyone a chance to have their voices heard and their votes counted." Clinton has won primaries in the biggest states so far, but Obama has won more total contests and leads her in the race for delegates to the party's August convention in Denver where the Democratic nominee will be formally ratified. Two of Obama's leading supporters, Sens. Christopher Dodd and Patrick Leahy, said Friday that Clinton should rethink her chances of overcoming that deficit and consider folding her campaign. read at source> http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/03/29/clinton.obama/index.html
