Last week, I wrote about some of the specific threats we face every time we use a computer. However, we are not helpless against these threats. In a video released last week, President Obama identified some basic things that all computer users can do to improve their cybersecurity and better protect themselves online. In this post, I would like to expand further on these tips that computer users can adopt to improve their "cyber hygiene."

Bill Clinton breaks down polling in Virginia's governor's race

From CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby
Clinton campaigned in Virginia on Tuesday.
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former President Bill Clinton played political analyst Tuesday during a campaign appearance in Virginia for Democrat Creigh Deeds, who is trails Republican Bob McDonnell according to recent polling.

"So are the polls right?" Clinton said during a rally in northern Virginia. "The answer is yes, no and maybe. Yes, the polls are an accurate measurement of the voter groups that they talk to in proportion to each other. So if on election day that profile shows up, you have to change minds."

"The 'no' answer is, that's not close to a profile of the people either who voted in the primary, which was an open primary, or in the general election of 2008."

Virginia Needs Our Help - Join the Virginia Democratic Coordinated Campaign in Phone Banking!

My name is Meghan Trim and I’m the deputy coordinator of the out-of-state volunteer program for the Virginia Democratic Coordinated Campaign.

This Thursday, October 22nd, 2009, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM (EST) activists throughout the country will be utilizing our Virtual Phone Bank system to call in to Virginia and help elect Creigh Deeds Virginia’s next Governor!

The race is close - and our opponent for Governor (Bob McDonnell) wrote a thesis at the age of 34 "in which he described working women and feminists as "detrimental" to the family. He said government policy should favor married couples over "cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators." He described as "illogical" a 1972 Supreme Court decision legalizing the use of contraception by unmarried couples. "- Washington Post 8/30/09.

Read more about the thesis by visiting: http://www.bobmcdonnellblueprint.com.

We need to keep a Democratic in the Virginia Governor’s mansion to keep Virginia moving forward and to back up President Obama in the Whitehouse.

I hope you will join us this Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 (5:00 PM – 9:00 PM EST) and help us win this fight! Email mtrim@vavictory09.org for a user name and password today.

Invite your friends, organization members and family to help as well – the more calls we make, the better our chances get of mobilizing our base and winning this election!

Thank you for your help and I hope you can join us this Thursday, October 22nd, 2009!

Sincerely,

Meghan Trim

OIG 2010 Recovery Act Plan (PDF, 2 pages - 86 KB)
We've reorganized USA.gov's Blogs from the U.S. Government page to make it easier to find blogs you want to read. Instead of one large list, the blogs are now organized by subject.

Friend --

Jenny U. from Missouri did what any parent would: When her son needed a kidney, she donated one of hers. But she didn't realize insurance companies would use her kindness as an excuse to never cover her again, calling her donation a "pre-existing condition."

Now, insurance companies are spending millions on a campaign of lies to kill health reform that would help folks like Jenny. So, today, with crucial negotiations taking place in Congress, we're raising our voices and making it clear: It's time to deliver on reform.

We've set a big goal: 100,000 calls to Congress made or committed to in a single day. To hit it, we'll need your help -- will you take 3 minutes to call Congress now?

Call your representatives and tell them: It's Time to Deliver on health reform. According to our records, you live in New York's 21st congressional district. Please call:

Sen. Chuck Schumer's Albany office at (518) 431-4070
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's Albany office at (585) 263-6250
Rep. Paul Tonko's Schenectady office at (518) 374-4547

(Not your representatives? Click here to look yours up.)

Health insurance reform is finally ready for consideration by the full Congress, and hundreds of insurance company lobbyists on Capitol Hill are working overtime to kill it. Calling is quick and easy, but effective -- and your voice has tremendous power at this critical moment.

After you make your call, tell the staffer who picks up where you live and that you're counting on Congress to deliver on health reform. Let them know that Americans like you support the President's plan -- and that if your representatives are working to pass it, they have your thanks.

If we hit 100,000 calls made or committed to, we'll send an unmistakable signal that this time, families must come before insurance companies. We'll be tracking progress toward our goal publicly -- make sure to report your call back to us so we can count it:

New Consumer Protection Rules for Credit Cards
Financial educators may be interested in new consumer protections for credit cards, some of which have already been implemented under rules from the Federal Reserve Board. For example, as of August 20, 2009, creditors must give customers 45 days notice before increasing the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) on a credit card account (up from 15 days) and they must mail or deliver periodic statements at least 21 days before the payment is due (an increase from 14 days). For details about the provisions already in effect, see the FDIC Financial Institution Letter to banks. For more information about the new credit card rules in general, including future requirements, read the Summer 2009 edition of FDIC Consumer News (see the next item). These rule changes also will be reflected in the next edition of the FDIC's Money Smart curriculum, scheduled to be available to the public in January.
FDIC Launches Foreclosure Prevention Initiative
The FDIC has produced a free tool kit of information that will help homeowners and the banking industry avoid unnecessary foreclosures and stop scams that promise false hope to consumers at risk of losing their homes. The tool kit includes a new FDIC brochure entitled "Is Foreclosure Knocking at Your Door?" that encourages consumers facing difficulties to contact their mortgage servicer and apply for a loan modification. Find the tool kit and other resources at http://www.FDIC.gov/foreclosureprevention

Why We Desperately Need Health Care for All - Now

Dear Friends,

More about why we desperately need health care for all:

This past weekend, I visited a festival at a church in a working class area of my district. These events are opportunities for people from the community to gather, to eat ethnic foods, listen to music and enjoy each other's company; before the brisk, brooding Cleveland winter begins to set in. When I walked through the doors, I felt as though I had stepped back in time, to when I was a child growing up in the inner city of Cleveland where I witnessed people struggling every day to make ends meet. From this early experience I have learned to recognize poverty, the clothes it wears and the physical appearance it presents.

What I saw in the church were humble people whose shoes were well worn and whose clothes were in need of repair. I also saw people struggling with various stages of ill health, with obvious physical difficulties. I know what poverty feels like and I felt it here and I was surprised. What made this visit memorable was that it occurred in a suburban community which had formerly been known for its solid middle class housing.

Meanwhile about 400 miles away, in Washington, DC, the insurance companies have wielded enormous influence to knock a public option out of the Senate Finance Committee health care bill and we still struggle to keep the public option alive in the House. A decision is due soon from the full Senate. Will they actually pass a bill which requires that Americans buy private insurance? The House continues to try to determine the shape and content of our legislation.

The political system is failing the American people. Money for Wall Street, not for Main Street. Money for War, not for Peace. Money to move jobs out of America, not to create new jobs here. Money for insurance companies, but what about the people?

While 47 million uninsured wait for an answer, and another 50 million underinsured stand by, Americans are losing their jobs, their homes, their health care and their retirement security. How long can people wait for help?

I am asking you to continue to join me in the push to have a state single payer amendment in the health care bill. Whatever passes the Congress will be insufficient to meet the broad based health care needs of the American people, which is why it is important to give the states the option to move toward single payer. Call your representative now and demand that the Kucinich state single payer amendment remain in the bill.

In my community, and many others across our nation, the level of human suffering from an economy "gone bad" is rising to shocking levels. A recent US Census report states that in this decade the number of northeastern Ohioans who live fractionally above the poverty line has risen 10% - to a quarter of a million people.

But I do not see cold statistics. I see real people. I see the poverty lining their faces. I see their eyes asking: Why?

Sincerely,

Dennis Kucinich
