Have you voted yet?
Idaho Young Democrats, republican election
teams across the state of Idaho are counting on you not to vote.
They refer to evidence that suggest that Young Voters don't vote.
This however is a myth, and it's up to you to make them remember
that. Get involved, and prove the conservatives wrong, VOTE LOCAL.
Ways to help.
1. Vote: In a local election EVERY VOTE MATTERS!
2. Get informed and discuss with your friends why you are voting
democrat!
3. Driving your friends: Elections are so close, if you drive
5 of your friends to vote, our chances increase!
4. Volunteer: No democratic candidate will turn down the help
of young volunteers, if they do, let me know! You can make a
change the is more direct than campaign contributions! People
do matter! Phone bank and go door to do. Some campaigns looking
for help are in North Idaho, Boise, and Pocatello.
Get involved, volunteer, and win your idaho
back!

USDA-Funded Swine Genome Sequencing
Project Succeeds in Completing First Draft
Sequence will Spur Advancements in Swine
Production and Human Medicine
WASHINGTON, Nov. 2, 2009 - An international
team of scientists, funded with a $10 million grant from the
National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), has completed
the first draft of the genome of a domesticated pig. This first
draft sequence will spur advancements in swine production and
human medicine.
"Understanding the swine genome will
lead to health advancements in the swine population and accelerate
the development of vaccinations for pigs," said Roger Beachy,
NIFA director. "This new insight into the genetic makeup
of the swine population can help reduce disease and enable medical
advancements in both pigs and humans."
At 98 percent complete, the draft sequence
will allow researchers to pinpoint genes that are useful to pork
production or are involved in immunity or other important physiological
processes in the pig. It will enhance breeding practices, offer
insight into diseases that afflict pigs -- and, sometimes, also
humans -- and will help in efforts to preserve the global heritage
of rare, endangered and wild pigs.
NIFA, previously the Cooperative State
Research, Education, and Extension Service, provided the $10
million in funding in 2006 to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
(UIUC). The total cost was about $24.3 million, with additional
support from USDA's Agricultural Research Service and various
American, Asian and European funders.
UIUC selected a red-haired Duroc pig from
a farm at the university to use for the sequencing project. The
Duroc now will be among the growing list of domesticated animals
that have had their genomes sequenced. Researchers will announce
the achievement today at a conference at the Wellcome Trust Sanger
Institute, Hinxton, UK.
In addition to the USDA funding, funding
and technical support were provided by the European Union SABRE;
the Institute for Pig Genetics, Netherlands; INRA Genescope,
France; Iowa Pork Producers Association; Iowa State University;
Korean National Livestock Research Institute; National Institute
of Agrobiological Sciences, Japan; National Pork Board, U.S.;
North Carolina Pork Council; North Carolina Agricultural Research
Service; North Carolina State University; University of Illinois;
the UK-based Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (which also performed
most of the sequencing); and the UK-based Biotechnology and Biological
Sciences Research Council.
Through federal funding and leadership
for research, education and extension programs, NIFA focuses
on investing in science and solving critical issues impacting
people's daily lives and the nation's future. For more information,
visit www.nifa.usda.gov.

Library of Congress Releases Reports
on Bibliographic Record
Production
The Library of Congress is releasing today
the results of its analysis
of the creation and distribution of bibliographic data in U.S.
and
Canadian libraries.
The Library commissioned R2 Consulting
LLC of Contoocook, N.H., to
search and describe the current marketplace for cataloging records
in
the MARC format, with primary focus on the economics of current
practices, including existing incentives and barriers to both
contribution and availability. Paired with the study online is
a report
of an internal working group indicating how recommendations from
"On the
Record: Report of the Library of Congress Working Group on the
Future of
Bibliographic Control" may be implemented at the Library.
Both reports
are available at www.loc.gov/bibliographic-future/.
R2 summarizes its 10 findings concerning
Library of Congress cataloging
and how it supports bibliographic-description needs across the
U.S. and
Canada. The report indicates there is adequate cataloging capacity
in
North America, but distribution channels and cooperative use
of the
records have not achieved their full potential. It also describes
the
market for cataloging records as "conflicted," meaning
that it faces
demands to be commercially solvent as well as freely accessible
and
open.
Deanna Marcum, Associate Librarian for
Library Services at the Library
of Congress, said "The findings of the R2 study will be
important for
all libraries and administrators who are interested in the possibilities
of cooperative cataloging and in making maximum use of bibliographic
records created for all institutions, everywhere. I am grateful
to Ruth
Fischer and Rick Lugg for their thoughtful report."
The Library of Congress, the nations
oldest federal cultural
institution, is the worlds preeminent reservoir of knowledge,
providing unparalleled integrated resources to Congress and the
American
people. Founded in 1800, the Library seeks to further human
understanding and wisdom by providing access to knowledge through
its
magnificent collections, which bring to bear the worlds
knowledge in
almost all of the worlds languages and Americas private
sector
intellectual and cultural creativity in almost all formats. Many
of the
Librarys rich resources and treasures may also be accessed
through
the Librarys websites www.loc.gov and myLOC.gov.
R2 Consulting LLC was founded in 2000 by
partners Rick Lugg and Ruth
Fischer and specializes in selection-to-access workflow analysis
and
organizational redesign of academic libraries. The firm also
participated in the "Economics and Organization of Bibliographic
Data"
session of the Library of Congress Working Group on the Future
of
Bibliographic Control. R2s primary professional interest
is to help
library organizations improve performance and adapt to the changing
information environment.
