Hoyer Statement on June Jobs Numbers
WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader
Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after
jobs numbers were announced for June:
Todays unemployment figures represent the struggles
of millions of American families who are working to make ends
meet through this historic recession. As President Obama has
made clear, an unemployment rate of 9.5% is not acceptable. But
even in the midst of these dispiriting numbers, it is clear that
without the Recovery Act, which became law 130 days ago, that
number would be even higher.
Since the Recovery Act was signed
into law, it has supported vital, job-creating projects across
Americafrom $15 billion in high speed rail, smart grid,
and broadband programs now open to competition to the nearly
2,000 new highway projects that are already underway. Independent
economist Mark Zandi has found that, by the end of next year,
the Recovery Act [will leave] the unemployment rate almost
2 percentage points lower than it would have been with
no action.
President Obama and the Democratic
Congress are focused on creating jobs and steering our economy
toward a full recovery. That recovery must be widely shared and
built to last, which is why we are committed to investing in
clean energy jobs, outstanding education, and affordable health
care for all. Today was another reminder that our troubles will
not be through overnight, and that we must continue to take bold
action to help families through this recession.

Young Democrats of Arizona: Meet your
delegation to the Young Democrats of America National Convention
I bet you are as outraged as I am about
the budget situation. The bad news is we can't do anything about
the Governor or the Republican dominated legislature today, but
we can do something to end this right-wing tomfoolery in 2010.
The fix begins in August with the Young
Democrats of America National Convention. This is a four-day
extensive training opportunity for our members to learn skills
and tactics to bring back to Arizona for the 2010 election.
Trainings on building stronger local chapters,
more effective voter contact, using online organizing tactics,
communications, and more will give us the skills we need to take
back our state!
YOU can make this happen! Sponsor a delegate
below and help get them to Chicago, get trained, and help kick
some Republicans out!
Can't pick a favorite? Contribute here:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held
a public advisory committee meeting on June 29 and June 30, 2009
to discuss acetaminophen use in both over-the-counter (OTC) and
prescription (Rx) products, the potential for liver injury, and
potential interventions to reduce the incidence of liver injury.
FDA recognizes that acetaminophen is an important drug used to
treat pain and fever in both OTC and RX products and is not seeking
to remove it from the market. The risk of developing liver injury
to the individual patient who uses the drug according to directions
is very low. However, acetaminophen containing products are used
extensively making the absolute number of liver injury cases
a public health concern.
The Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee with the
Anesthetic and Life Support Drugs Advisory Committee and the
Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee provided the FDA with
independent advice from outside experts. These recommendations
are advisory in nature and the FDA is not bound to follow their
recommendations. At this time, the FDA has not made any decisions
regarding acetaminophen containing products, but is reviewing
the recommendations of the advisory committee, all available
safety and efficacy data as well as public input before making
a final decision. Please consult your healthcare provider about
the safe and effective use of both OTC and RX acetaminophen containing
products.
If you would like to make a formal comment in regards to liver
injury with the use of acetaminophen, please refer to the following
link:

United
We Serve
"United We Serve" is a nationwide service initiative,
announced by President Obama, that will help meet growing social
needs resulting from the economic downturn. The initiative aims
to both expand the impact of existing organizations by engaging
new volunteers in their work and encourage volunteers to develop
their own "do-it-yourself" projects. United We Serve
is an initial 81 days of service, through September 11, 2009,
but hopes to grow into a sustained, collaborative and focused
effort to promote service as a way of life for all Americans.

SUMMER PROLOGUE HIGHLIGHTS 75TH ANNIVERSARY
OF THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES
Washington, D.C. . . . The National Archives
celebrates its 75th anniversary with a special issue of Prologue:
Quarterly of the National Archives and Records Administration.
The issue highlights Acting Archivist Adrienne
Thomas' recollections from her 39-year career at the Archives;
the National Archives role in providing war planners with meteorological
records and maps for use on D-Day 1944; the inside story behind
the transfer of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution
from the Library of Congress; the behind-the-scenes battle the
agency waged in the 1980s to regain its status as an independent
agency; and the pivotal role that the Archives played in preserving
the records and tapes of the Nixon Presidency.
The anniversary issue offers a peek at
a detail of the drawings of the bronze doors, the largest in
the world, by the famous architect John Russell Pope who designed
the building. It also tells the story of the early struggles
to create the agency, its formative years under President Franklin
D. Roosevelt, and how it was transformed over the years by war,
government reorganization, and changes in the way records are
created and preserved.
Noting that Roosevelt was instrumental
in setting the National Archives on its course as the nation's
record keeper, the article states: "He likely would not
recognize the National Archives of the 21st century, with its
leadership role in federal records management, in the classification
and declassification of government documents, and in finding
ways to ensure that the government can preserve the electronic
records of today as well as of the future."
The issue also features a history of the
National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the
Archives' grant-making arm, which was also created in the same1934
legislation that created the Archives.
Summer Prologue also contains the regular
fare of articles revealing new historical insights and articles
about programs and activities at the National Archives nationwide:
* "When the 'Enemy' Landed at Angel
Island" recounts how the immigration station on Angel Island
in San Francisco Bay sought to bar entry to hostile aliens and
deport resident radicals during World War I.
* "Sitting in Judgment" recalls
the case of Myron C. Cramer, who thought he was finished with
the trial of German saboteurs who made it into the United States
during World War II, only to find himself sent to Tokyo for the
trials of Japanese war leaders.
* "The First Nixon Library" reveals
the story of a library in Hong Kong named for Richard Nixon in
honor of his visit there as Vice President in the mid-1950s,
long before he became President.
* "In the King's Service" tells
the story of Hugh Finlay, who became the nation's postmaster
when George III fired Benjamin Franklin in the Revolutionary
period.
For four decades, Prologue has shared with
readers the rich resources and programs of the National Archives,
its regional archives, and the Presidential libraries. Each issue
features historical articles-drawn from National Archives' holdings
and written by noted historians, archivists, and experts-as well
as articles explaining and describing many of the National Archives'
activities and programs as the nation's recordkeeping agency.
The Washington Post has said, "Prologue . . . can be regarded
quite literally as an invitation for further study. It is also
consistently absorbing reading."
A one-year subscription to Prologue costs
$24. To order:
* Call 1-800-234-8861 or 202-357-5482.
* Go to the subscribe page, print out the order form , and mail
it to Prologue,
National Archives Trust Fund (Cashier) NAT,
8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001.
* Order online.
* Fax credit card orders to Prologue at 202-357-5918.
Single copies of Prologue are available
at the Archives Shop or at the Cashier's Office in the National
Archives Building in Washington, DC, or at the Publications Sales
Office at the National Archives at College Park, MD. Single copies
are also available in the shops at some Presidential libraries
and at the new National Archives at Kansas City. In Washington,
DC, it is available at Politics and Prose (5015 Connecticut Ave
NW), The News Room (1803 Connecticut Ave NW), and One Stop News

Archives and its programs and exhibits, go to www.archives.gov.

Secretary LaHood Announces Extension of
California High-Speed Rail Corridor to Las Vegas
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, along with Senate Majority
Leader Harry Reid, key members of the Nevada labor community,
business leaders and other elected officials, announced today
an agreement between the states of California and Nevada to extend
the California High-Speed Rail corridor from the Los Angeles
area to the Las Vegas.
The extension of the California corridor is another great
example of regional cooperation, which will be critical to transforming
travel in America and the creation of a national system of high-speed
rail lines, said Secretary LaHood. We will continue
to encourage new and innovative partnerships like this one. We
believe that the development of regional high-speed passenger
rail systems will create jobs, spur economic development, and
provide positive environmental benefits for all Americans.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid praised the potential benefits
of the Nevada-California cooperation. Today weve
taken a giant step towards strengthening Nevadas economy,
Majority Leader Reid said. High-speed rail not only provides
a much needed means of transportation that will reduce congestion
on I-15, but it will create jobs at a time when Nevada needs
them the most, increase tourism and reduce our reliance on foreign
oil.
In April, President Obama, Vice President Biden and Secretary
LaHood announced the effort to transform the nations transportation
system by developing rail infrastructure and launching high-speed
passenger rail services in 100-600 mile corridors that connect
U.S. communities.
The Obama Administration is moving fast to put in place this
ambitious and important agenda. Congress passed the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), which included
an $8 billion High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail (HSIPR) highly-competitive
grant program. The President has proposed a continuing $1 billion
annual investment in high-speed rail.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a strategic
plan for high-speed rail and recently announced guidelines for
states and groups of states to apply for the economic recovery
funds. DOT expects to announce the first round of merit-based
grants in the fall.

rail in America, go to: http://www.fra.dot.gov/us/content/31
