Pelosi: Bush 'did not have a plan to get the job done'
Posted: December 1st, 2009 09:15 PM ET
Washington (CNN) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after President Obama's speech Tuesday night:

“President Obama inherited a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan because the Bush Administration did not have a plan to get the job done.

“Tonight, the President articulated a way out of this war with the mission of defeating Al Qaeda and preventing terrorists from using Afghanistan and Pakistan as safe havens to again launch attacks against the United States and our allies. The President has offered President Karzai a chance to prove that he is a reliable partner. The American people and the Congress will now have an opportunity to fully examine this strategy.

“Our troops in Afghanistan and around the world have performed excellently; they have done everything that has been asked of them. As always, we are grateful and respectful of the enormous sacrifices our men and women in uniform, and their families, have made.”

Congressman Kucinich Addresses Escalation in Afghanistan

Dear Friends,

Tonight the President will announce an escalation of the war in Afghanistan. An additional 30,000 troops will bring the United States' total in Afghanistan to 100,000. Tomorrow I will offer an analysis of the President's plan.

The community I represent in Cleveland, Ohio, is suffering from massive unemployment, record home foreclosures, and small business failures. People are losing their jobs, their health care, their homes, their savings, their investments, and their retirement security. The middle class is gravely threatened. What is happening in Cleveland is occurring nationwide. Yet, Wall Street received over $13 trillion in bailouts, with untold millions for high salaries and bonuses, while Main Street loses its power through unemployment, reduced wages and benefits and little or no access to credit or investment capital. There is something fundamentally wrong with our economy which borrowing more money to spend on war cannot and will not cure. Perhaps nation building should begin at home.

An escalation of the war in Afghanistan at a time of such economic dislocation and hardship raises questions about America's priorities and whether or not we are losing our way as we attempt to stride aside the globe as some Colossus. Tomorrow we will begin anew the discussion.

Thank you.

Dennis Kucinich

Several Republican and Democratic lawmakers have spoken out ahead of President Barack Obama's speech on Afghanistan, saying they oppose sending additional troops to the country, and that Congress should have the opportunity to vote on a troop surge. Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine’s Statement in Recognition of World AIDS Day

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine’s Statement in Recognition of World AIDS Day

Washington – Every December 1 since 1988, people around the world have come together to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, remember those who have lost their lives and provide support to those who are living with the disease. DNC Chairman Tim Kaine issued the following statement in recognition of World AIDS Day 2009:

“There are more than 33 million people living with HIV/AIDS around the world, including more than 1 million here in the United States.

“Today is an opportunity not only to raise awareness about the disease, but also to remember those who have lost their lives and recommit ourselves to fighting for those living with HIV/AIDS by investing in prevention, new treatments, medications and support services.

“President Obama has demonstrated critical leadership on HIV/AIDS issues. The Administration is developing a comprehensive national strategy to address the epidemic domestically and a global health initiative to build on the progress made around the world during the past several decades. In October, the President signed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act, bipartisan legislation that will provide medical treatment and support services to more than half a million Americans living with the disease. And the Obama Administration, with approval from Congress, has also eliminated the HIV entry ban, thereby ending discrimination against those with HIV who are visitors to the United States.

“When the very first cases of HIV/AIDS were discovered more than 30 years ago, patients were treated with fear and discrimination. Now, thanks in part to global efforts like World AIDS Day, we’ve made tremendous progress in raising awareness about the disease, treating those afflicted by it and lessening its stigma.

“Democrats are proud to stand with President Obama as we continue to make progress combating HIV/AIDS at home and renewing our leadership role on the issue abroad.”

U.S. Transportation Secretary Announces $280 Million for Streetcars
First Funds for Administration's Livability Initiative Will Create Jobs

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced the availability of $280 million for urban circulator projects such as streetcars, buses, and bus facilities to support communities, expand business opportunities and improve people’s quality of life while also creating jobs.

The money represents the first batch of funding by the Obama Administration for its Livability Initiative, a joint venture of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“This represents a significant effort to promote livable communities, improve the quality of life for more Americans and create more transportation choices that serve the needs of individual communities,” Secretary LaHood said. “Fostering the concept of livability in transportation projects will stimulate America’s neighborhoods to become safer, healthier and more vibrant.”

Secretary LaHood made the announcement at the historic Carrollton Car Barn streetcar facility with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin during a tour of the city’s Katrina recovery efforts.

“Not only will these urban circulator and bus projects provide Americans with new neighborhood-friendly transit systems, they will give us a cleaner environment and create much-needed jobs,” Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff said.

A maximum amount of $25 million per project will be made available from approximately $130 million in unallocated discretionary New Starts/Small Starts Program funds. Eligible projects include streetcars and other urban circulator systems. Priority will be given to projects that connect destinations and foster the redevelopment of communities into walkable, mixed use, high-density environments.

A second pot of money totaling $150 million in unallocated discretionary Bus and Bus Facility funds will be available for projects that will foster the preservation and enhancement of urban and rural communities by providing new mobility options which provide access to jobs, healthcare, and education, and/or contribute to the redevelopment of neighborhoods into pedestrian-friendly vibrant environments.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) plans to announce grants early in 2010. Key lawmakers on Capitol Hill greeted the news with enthusiasm.

“This grant program will create jobs and reduce pollution while saving commuters in Connecticut and across the country time and money,” said Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT), author of legislation to help towns and regions plan and implement development projects that integrate needs for transportation, housing, land use, and economic development. “I look forward to working with the Department of Transportation, along with HUD and EPA, as we work to make communities across the country more livable.”
“I applaud this important step in recognizing the environmental and economic development benefits of streetcars and other sustainable transit projects,” House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Jim Oberstar (D-MN) said. “I have always embraced the vision to improve the sustainability of our communities through new transit and livability initiatives, and I look forward to working with the Administration to accomplish our shared goals.”
“Unlike the Bush Administration and its failed transit policies, this Administration clearly understands the need to fund low-cost, energy-efficient, made-in-America projects like streetcars,” Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Chairman of the House Highways and Transit Subcommittee said. “These competitive grant programs will invest in good-paying jobs, livable communities, and a less-congested, more fuel-efficient future.”
“This investment in buses, streetcars and sustainable transit projects will reduce congestion and lay a strong foundation for jobs and economic growth in communities around the country," said Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of the Senate Transportation and Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, who included funding for the Administration's livable communities initiative in the 2010 Senate bill. “I applaud the Obama Administration for making good on the promise to invest in infrastructure that strengthens both our economy and our environment. I look forward to continuing to work with the Administration on these sustainable, livable and job-creating investments.”
“This is exactly the kind of effort that I have been urging the Department to take. The Secretary’s call for transit investments in innovative streetcar, bus and transit systems will build more livable communities for families while helping to reduce our nation’s carbon footprint,” said Congressman John W. Olver (D-MA), Chairman of the House Transportation and Housing Appropriations Subcommittee.

“As a longtime champion of streetcars, it is rewarding to see this administration prioritize community livability and invest in our nation's transportation systems,” Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) said. “Making a down payment on streetcars, better bus access, and improved public transit means investing in our Nation's economic success. The Obama Administration is following through on its commitment to be a better partner to local communities by laying the physical groundwork for good jobs and healthier, more secure communities.”

Research In Motion Releases Advisory for BlackBerry PDF Distiller Vulnerabilities

Original release date: December 1, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Last revised: December 1, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Research In Motion has released a security advisory to address
multiple vulnerabilities in the PDF distiller of some released
versions of the BlackBerry Attachment Service. The advisory lists the
affected versions as BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.0 running on
Microsoft Windows version 2003 or 2008, BlackBerry Enterprise Server
5.0.0 running on Microsoft Windows 2000, BlackBerry Enterprise Server
software versions 4.1.3 through 4.1.7, and BlackBerry Professional
Software 4.1.4. By convincing a user to view a specially crafted PDF
file, an attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code or cause a
denial-of-service condition on the system that hosts the BlackBerry
Attachment Service.

US-CERT encourages users and administrators to review BlackBerry
security advisory KB19860 and apply any necessary updates.

CREATING JOBS, GROWING THE ECONOMY
Recovery Act, Democrat Initiatives Creating and Saving Jobs

http://majorityleader.gov/docUploads/DemocraticJobCreation120109.pdf

Democrats are working to create jobs and get Americans back to work. While Democrats understand that unemployment numbers are still far too high, job losses are continuing to improve from where they were a year ago and there are positive indicators that the economy is growing.

Recovery Act Creating Jobs and Growing the Economy

“CBO estimates that in the third quarter of calendar year 2009, an additional 600,000 to 1.6 million people were employed in the United States and real (inflation adjusted) GDP was 1.2 to 3.2 percent higher, than would have been the case in the absence of ARRA. Those ranges…..encompass most economists views on the effects of fiscal stimulus.” – Congressional Budget Office (CBO), 11/30/09

Yesterday the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office released a positive report on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s impact on the economy and jobs, indicating that it is having the intended effect of creating jobs and growing the economy. In the third quarter, CBO estimates that the Recovery Act had the following impact on the economy and jobs:

• Created Jobs: 600,000 to 1.6 million more Americans workers had jobs
• Increased GDP: The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 1.2 percent to 3.2 percent higher – this means that the economy is growing again and jobs should follow in the coming months
• Curbed Unemployment: The unemployment rate was 0.3 to 0.9 percentage points lower than it would have been without the Recovery Act

A Focus on Main Street:
Democrats Continue Working to Create Jobs, Grow Economy

“[W]ith roughly a quarter of the stimulus money out the door after nine months, the accumulation of hard data and real-life experience has allowed more dispassionate analysts to reach a consensus that the stimulus package … is working. The legislation, a variety of economists say, is helping an economy in free fall a year ago to grow again and shed fewer jobs than it otherwise would.” – New York Times, 11/20/09

This week, Democrats continue working to spur economic growth and get Americans back to work:

• White House Jobs Summit: A forum on jobs and economic growth on Thursday at the White House is an opportunity for the President and his economic team to hear from business leaders, small business owners, and financial experts about ideas for continuing to grow the economy and put Americans back to work.
• Main Street Tour: Following the job forum, the President will kick off a cross-country tour to highlight Democratic efforts to boost the economy and hear directly from workers about the challenges they are facing.
• Community Job Forums: The White House is organizing town-hall style discussions about jobs and the economy to hear from everyday Americans about their personal experiences. Members of Congress will also continue holding events in their districts to hear directly from Americans who have been impacted by the downtown.
• Jobs Bill: House and Senate Democrats are discussing ways to enact legislation in the short term that will create more jobs and build on the foundation laid by the Recovery Act.

This Week in Kabul: Traditional Justice
On November 27, USIP convened a half-day workshop for International Security Assistance Force and U.S. personnel on traditional justice in Afghanistan. Participants discussed how traditional justice mechanisms continue to fill a void where federal laws or solid state institutions do not yet exist, are not workable or are not yet used or trusted in rural areas. How can outsiders help assist but not impose such a massive cultural shift, and how can they encourage and support dispute resolutions in the meantime? Read the full conference summary.

Hello,

My name is Christopher Jenkins an I am intern with the Alaska Democratic Party in Anchorage. I wanted to write that I have started a new Facebook Group.

The group is called "Hold Mayor Dan Sullivan Accountable." Members of the group are tired of the politically motivated and irresponsible decisions made by the first term Anchorage Mayor.

If you believe Mayor Sullivan is wrong to cut vital city services or veto specific Anchorage Assembly Ordinances, join this Facebook group and show Anchorage we want to move forward not backwards.

Majority Leader Hoyer Statement on President Obama’s Afghanistan Strategy

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Obama’s speech on his strategy for Afghanistan:

“President Obama inherited two major challenges from the Bush Administration: an economy in steep decline and involvement in two wars in which the objectives set forth at their outset had not been attained.

“Tonight the President set forth a course of action to go forward in Afghanistan, a decision that was made necessary by the failure of the Bush Administration to complete successfully our mission in Afghanistan. The course the President has undertaken is designed to achieve the twin objectives of ensuring that a resurgent al Qaeda is precluded from again using Afghanistan as a staging area for an attack on the United States and creating the ability of the Afghan government and people to provide for their own security and defense.

“The plan presented is balanced. It provides the resources, in partnership with allied nations, that the military has said are needed to accomplish our objectives, while also making it clear to the Karzai government and the Afghan people that our commitment is not without limit. His statement made it clear that there is an expectation that Afghanistan must transition to a place of self-reliance in the near term. Such an expectation is appropriate and necessary.

“Pakistan’s willingness to defend itself and continue effective action against al Qaeda and the Taliban in its country will be critical, as the President observed, to the success of our efforts in Afghanistan.

“I look forward to the testimony of both military and civilian leaders on the President’s proposal, how to achieve the goals established, and the probability of success of the President’s plan.”
