Hoyer on GDP Report --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Department of Commerces Gross Domestic Product numbers, which fell at a 0.3 percent annual rate in the third quarter: The Department of Commerce released more bad news today on the economy the GDP has fallen for the first time in 2008. This is important because it means that America is producing less and selling less. There is no doubt that these economic conditions are affecting millions of American families and workers. Due to rising unemployment, declining wages, and the rising cost of living, American consumer spending plunged to its lowest point in 28 years. Joe the worker is suffering because the Bush-McCain economic policies, which were not focused on whats good for Main Street, have been proven decisive failures. Democrats understand the urgency of this economic condition, and we will fight for fiscally responsible solutions and to help those struggling on Main Street get back on their feet. America, a land of opportunity and promise, has the ability and resources to recover from this economic downturn. To that end, we are hopeful that Republicans will join with us in the coming weeks to pass a Main Street recovery package.

Last night, Barack took to
the airwaves to make the case for real change. He used the time
to tell the stories of ordinary people who need real solutions
to their problems. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The presentation reached its finale with Barack addressing the nation live from Florida -- I've included the video of that moment below. But right now, I need to ask you for help. We just learned that the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee had a $20 million cash advantage on October 15th. That means we can expect to see a fierce blitz of negativity in the final days -- so-called "robocalls," mail pieces, and TV ads filled with smears and false attacks. We can't let our opponents' low-road tactics prevail. To stand up to this last-minute spending spree, we need to step up our efforts. Watch Barack's speech and make your first donation of $5 or more before it's too late:
https://donate.barackobama.com/forthefinish The resources we have to get our message out in the next 5 days could make all the difference. Thanks for your support, Joe |

There are just a few short
days left before Americans head to the polls, and I'd like to
ask you for your help once more. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I went through the races with my political team one final time, and we picked these very important races in the country -- the ones right on the edge, the ones where your donation can make the difference with just a few days to go. I can promise you this: your donation to these candidates will go directly to helping them get out every vote and winning on November 4. Here are the Democrats who need your help right now: In Mississippi, Ronnie Musgrove has shocked the pundits by pulling extremely close in his race to win a Senate seat for Democrats. His conservative, Republican opponent has even resorted to ads attacking me and my supporters. It's up to you to keep Ronnie's momentum going. In Pennsylvania, my good friend John Murtha -- a strong supporter for me during the primaries and an important voice against the war in Iraq -- is depending on your help to win. Raul Martinez in Florida has a great chance at picking up a Democratic seat from a conservative Republican incumbent. The latest polling has this race in dead heat and Raul needs our help to push back against Republican attacks. And in John McCain's home state of Arizona, Ann Kirkpatrick has a very good chance to pick up a Republican-held seat. She'll be the first Democrat ever elected in Arizona's 1st district -- if you help her today. This is your last chance to make a difference
for Democrats in tight races -- please contribute directly to
Ronnie, John, Raul, and Ann today.
I'm so proud of all the work we've done, and so proud to have done it with you. I can't wait to celebrate with you on November 4, as we elect a Democratic President and a strong Democratic Congress. Thank you, Hillary |
I know this campaign has asked
a lot of you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But in the next 5 days, Barack will need you more than ever before. Together, we can make sure all voters head to the polls and make their voices heard in this election. And we can get Barack's message of change out to millions and millions of Americans in these final hours. That's why I'm asking you to dig deep and make one final donation to help get us across the finish line. Take a minute to remember why you joined this movement, then please make a donation of $5 or more today. I've been blessed over the last 21 months to have been invited into your communities and to hear so many of your personal stories. Supporters like you have told me about loved ones who can't afford health care, and relatives who've been laid off from jobs they've had for decades. About family members fighting bravely in Iraq, and worries about affording college in a struggling economy. But what I've heard more than anything else is hope. A shared hope that if we work together, we can change politics and make this country better for all Americans. I know that we can make it happen -- and we are so very close. Make a donation of $5 or more and stand with Barack these last few days: https://donate.barackobama.com/forbarack The strength of this campaign has always come from the individual stories and hard work of millions of supporters like you. Thank you for being part of this movement, Michelle |

The blue-chip indicator had been up as much as 275 points earlier. The Standard & Poors 500 index rose 2 percent and the Nasdaq composite gained 1.6 percent. Polls suggest electoral gains
for Obama -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thats contributing to an increase in territory for Obama in CNNs Electoral College Map. The map estimates what would occur if the election were held today, by reviewing state polls, voting trends, campaign visits and advertising. In the Nevada survey one of five CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation state polls released Thursday morning 52 percent of likely voters say Obama is their choice for president, with 45 percent backing John McCain. That seven-point lead is up from a five-point advantage Obama held in a poll taken one week ago. Nevada narrowly voted for George W. Bush
in the last two presidential contests. |
Newspaper Endorsements Matter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The latest Editor & Publisher tally shows Obama maintains his strong lead in daily newspaper endorsements, 234 to 105. The circulation of the Obama-backing papers stands at over 21 million, compared with McCain's 7 million. Furthermore, at least 47 newspapers have
now switched to Obama from Bush in 2004, with just four flipping
to McCain. |
