Obama says economy, security linked
Posted: 01:22 PM ET
(CNN) — Sen. Barack Obama said Wednesday that the country needs a leader who “understands the connection between our economy and our strength in the world.”

“We often hear about two debates — one on national security and one on the economy — but that is a false distinction,” he told reporters following a meeting on national security policy. “We can’t afford another president who ignores the fundamentals of our economy while running up record deficits to fight a war without end in Iraq.”

Obama charged that Sen. John McCain would continue “the policies that have put our economy into crisis and endangered our national security.”

Obama’s remarks come as the Democrat holds his biggest lead yet, according to CNN’s latest average of national polls. He is ahead of McCain by 9 points — 51 percent to 42 percent.

Mass layoffs highest since 9/11
Posted: 10:46 AM ET
WASHINGTON (CNNMoney.com) — The number of layoff announcements involving at least 50 workers rose in September to the highest level since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks seven years ago, the government said Wednesday.

There were 2,269 mass layoff actions, up 497 from August, according to statistics released by the Labor Department.

“At large firms, basically what I see is an across-the-board, shotgun approach,” said Paul Sarvadi, CEO of human resources outsourcing firm Administaff in Houston. “If they anticipate revenues going down, then they see how much need to cut to reach operating targets, and equate that cost to a number of people.”

German bank raided over Lehman payments
Posted: 06:15 AM ET
BERLIN, Germany (CNN) — German investigators raided the main office of a government credit agency Wednesday as part of an investigation into payments made to failed U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers, a spokesman for the agency said.

Investigators from Germany’s Federal Criminal Office and the state prosecutor’s office conducted the raid and searches at the Frankfurt offices of Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau (Credit Agency for Reconstruction), or KFW, spokesman Wolfram Schweickhardt said.

The government-owned KFW bank group had transferred 319 million euros ($412 million) to Lehman Brothers after the U.S. bank filed for bankruptcy last month.

The investigation is into possible embezzlement in connection with the payments made to Lehman, he said.

I can tell you right now who's going to win this election -- the campaign that steps up its ground game in the final days.

I can tell you right now who's going to win this election -- the campaign that steps up its ground game in the final days.

The race is deadlocked in a number of crucial battleground states, including Ohio, Missouri, and Indiana. And we're neck-and-neck in Florida, North Carolina, and Nevada.

We have to make our final, tough decisions about where to fight and how strong we can make our team. And those choices will depend on the financial resources we have tomorrow at midnight.

If you make a donation of $10 or more before the deadline, you'll receive a limited edition Obama-Biden car magnet.

You can also receive an Obama-Biden T-shirt with a donation of $30 or more.

The margins of victory in this election will be slim, and it's going to be decided in the field.

We're up against the Republicans' proven get out the vote push -- which delivered victories for George Bush in 2000 and 2004.

We can't fall short. There's too much at stake in this election.

This campaign has contacted 11 million voters since the convention. But to hit our targets, we need to contact three times that number of voters between now and Election Day.

The more resources we have on hand, the more voters we can reach.

From the start, our field program has been in your hands. It depends on your time, your energy -- and your generosity.

You decide how big we can go.

The deadline is midnight tomorrow, October 23rd. Please make a donation of $10 or more right now and receive your Obama-Biden car magnet:

https://donate.barackobama.com/deadlinemagnet

With your support, Barack could win in a number of closely contested battleground states.

We need to do everything we can to extend our reach -- we can't afford to look back on November 5th and say we could have done more.

Thanks for your commitment to building the best field program in the history of presidential politics,

Jon
