Hoyer Statement on Chairman
Bernanke, White House Comments Regarding Economic Recovery Package
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to remarks made by Chairman Ben Bernanke and the White House regarding an economic recovery package: Testifying today before the House Budget Committee, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke voiced his support for an economic recovery package. Consideration of a fiscal package by the Congress at this juncture seems appropriate, Bernanke said. Subsequent White House comments indicate President Bush is moving towards Democrats position on this vital issue as well. With millions of jobs and homes at risk, and retirement savings endangered, passing a recovery package should be at the top of Congresss agenda. Such a package would aim to create jobs, restore consumer confidence, and help those who are being hit hardest in this recession. I urge President Bush and Congressional Republicans to work with Democrats to make a targeted, fiscally-responsible recovery a reality.

Right now, we have one last
chance to strengthen our field operation and expand our reach
even further. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Friday, we're making the very last, hard decisions about allocating our resources. And it will all come down to where we stand financially on Thursday at midnight. We need to make decisions about strengthening our efforts in key battleground states -- and identify opportunities for expansion. You can decide where we fight -- and how strong our team will be. Please make a donation of $5 or more before the deadline. I know it's been a long campaign. And I know you've been asked to do a lot. I hear you. But right now, I'm asking you to remember what's at stake for our country. After 20 months of fighting to bring the change we need, we cannot hold back now. We need to dig deep because what we do -- or don't do -- between now and Election Day will make all the difference. Please make a donation of $5 or more before the deadline to expand the final map of battleground states and strengthen our field operation: https://donate.barackobama.com/finaldeadline I'd like to fight for votes in every corner of the country. But the reality is that we need to focus and redouble our efforts for the final push. Thank you for making sure this campaign has the resources to compete in as many states as possible, Barack |

Congress mulls domestic intelligence
agency -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The RAND Corporation, a non-profit think tank that provides independent analysis and research, provided the report Monday to the Department of Homeland Security. Congress requested the assessment in the wake of intelligence failures in the prelude to the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. The report also discusses ways to organize a new entity, either as part of an existing department or as a new agency, and provides some alternative actions short of reorganization that could improve domestic intelligence gathering. The report does not, however, make a recommendation. |
U.S. may leave Iraq by 2011 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All other crimes and such murders committed inside U.S. facilities or by on-duty forces would fall under American jurisdiction, the agreement says. The point has been a sticky one for negotiators, U.S. and Iraqi officials have said, with the American side preferring that its troops and contractors remain immune from Iraqi law. The draft also calls for U.S. troops to
be out of Iraqi cities by July 30, 2009, and out of the country
entirely by December 31, 2011. The agreement allows for an earlier
withdrawal or an extension of the U.S. forces stay in Iraq,
by agreement of both parties. |
Obama fends off socialism
charge -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Palin-McCain line of attack was also
echoed at an Orlando, Florida, Speaking in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Sunday, Obama brushed off McCain and Palins charge, saying his plan would benefit the middle class. John McCain thinks that giving these Americans a break is socialism. Well, I call it opportunity, and there is nothing more American than that, Obama said. Its kind of hard to figure
how Warren Buffett endorsed me, Colin Powell endorsed me, and
John McCain thinks Im socialist. |
Most think McCain attacks
unfair, poll finds -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to a new survey from CNN and the Opinion Research Corp., nearly six in 10 Americans believe McCain has unfairly gone negative in his bid for the White House. That percentage is significantly higher than it was last September, when just 42 percent thought the Republican presidential nominee was running an overly negative campaign. It also is considerably higher than the percentage of Americans who feel Obama has gone unfairly negative. In recent weeks both campaigns have stepped
up spending on negative television ads and launched attacks at
each others record. But comments from both McCain and Republican
VP candidate Sarah Palin questioning Obamas relationship
with former 1960s radical William Ayers have drawn particular
scrutiny, as has the GOP tickets recent suggestion Obama
will seek to carry out socialist policies. |

McCain Giving Up on Colorado -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instead, the campaign's "risky strategy" is counting on Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and a comeback in Pennsylvania. The McCain campaign responds: "We see the race tightening both internally and in public polling. We are within striking distance in the key battleground states we need to win." http://politicalwire.com/archives/2008/10/20/mccain_giving_up_on_colorado.html |

Suffolk Poll: Obama Leads
in Ohio -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Said pollster David Paleologos: "If Ohio goes for Obama, it may be lights out for McCain. At least today, the probability of an Ohio win is supported by the high-single-digit lead in the statewide poll coupled with the Perry County bellwether, which showed Obama leading by 4 percent." |
Palin Critical of Robocalls -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Said Palin: "If I called all the shots, and if I could wave a magic wand. I would be sitting at a kitchen table with more and more Americans, talking to them about our plan to get the economy back on track and winning the war and not having to rely on the old conventional ways of campaigning that includes those robocalls and includes spending so much money on the television ads that, I think, is kind of draining out there in terms of Americans' attention span. They get a bit irritated with just being inundated..." http://politicalwire.com/archives/2008/10/20/palin_critical_of_robocalls.html |
Obama Leads in Newspaper Endorsements -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Obama's lopsided margin, including most of the major papers that have decided so far, is in stark contrast to John Kerry barely edging George W.
