Hoyer Statement on Chairman Bernanke,
White House Comments Regarding
Economic Recovery Package

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to remarks made by Chairman Ben Bernanke and the White House regarding an economic recovery package:

“Testifying today before the House Budget Committee, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke voiced his support for an economic recovery package. ‘Consideration of a fiscal package by the Congress at this juncture seems appropriate,’ Bernanke said. Subsequent White House comments indicate President Bush is moving towards Democrats’ position on this vital issue as well.

“With millions of jobs and homes at risk, and retirement savings endangered, passing a recovery package should be at the top of Congress’s agenda. Such a package would aim to create jobs, restore consumer confidence, and help those who are being hit hardest in this recession. I urge President Bush and Congressional Republicans to work with Democrats to make a targeted, fiscally-responsible recovery a reality.”

Right now, we have one last chance to strengthen our field operation and expand our reach even further.

This Friday, we're making the very last, hard decisions about allocating our resources. And it will all come down to where we stand financially on Thursday at midnight.

We need to make decisions about strengthening our efforts in key battleground states -- and identify opportunities for expansion.

You can decide where we fight -- and how strong our team will be. Please make a donation of $5 or more before the deadline.

I know it's been a long campaign. And I know you've been asked to do a lot.

I hear you.

But right now, I'm asking you to remember what's at stake for our country.

After 20 months of fighting to bring the change we need, we cannot hold back now. We need to dig deep because what we do -- or don't do -- between now and Election Day will make all the difference.

Please make a donation of $5 or more before the deadline to expand the final map of battleground states and strengthen our field operation:

https://donate.barackobama.com/finaldeadline

I'd like to fight for votes in every corner of the country. But the reality is that we need to focus and redouble our efforts for the final push.

Thank you for making sure this campaign has the resources to compete in as many states as possible,

Barack

Congress mulls domestic intelligence agency
Posted: 07:48 PM ET
WASHINGTON (CNN) — A new report weighs the pros and cons of establishing a domestic intelligence agency to keep an eye on potential threats inside the United States, giving Congress a tool in its deliberations on the issue.

The RAND Corporation, a non-profit think tank that provides independent analysis and research, provided the report Monday to the Department of Homeland Security. Congress requested the assessment in the wake of intelligence failures in the prelude to the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The report also discusses ways to organize a new entity, either as part of an existing department or as a new agency, and provides some alternative actions short of reorganization that could improve domestic intelligence gathering.

The report does not, however, make a recommendation.

U.S. may leave Iraq by 2011
Posted: 10:28 PM ET
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — U.S. forces or contractors who commit “major and premeditated murders” while off-duty and outside U.S. facilities would fall under Iraqi jurisdiction, according to a Status of Forces Agreement under review by Iraqi lawmakers, according to a copy of the draft agreement obtained by CNN.

All other crimes — and such murders committed inside U.S. facilities or by on-duty forces — would fall under American jurisdiction, the agreement says.

The point has been a sticky one for negotiators, U.S. and Iraqi officials have said, with the American side preferring that its troops and contractors remain immune from Iraqi law.

The draft also calls for U.S. troops to be out of Iraqi cities by July 30, 2009, and out of the country entirely by December 31, 2011. The agreement allows for an earlier withdrawal or an extension of the U.S. forces’ stay in Iraq, by agreement of both parties.

Obama fends off ’socialism’ charge
Posted: 11:27 AM ET
(CNN) — Gov. Sarah Palin continued the GOP offensive Sunday, attacking Sen. Barack Obama’s tax plan as “socialist,” and though Sen. John McCain tempered his allegations, his message was the same.

The Palin-McCain line of attack was also echoed at an Orlando, Florida,
event by their GOP colleague, Sen. Mel Martinez, who likened Obama’s tax plan to communist Cuba.

Speaking in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Sunday, Obama brushed off McCain and Palin’s charge, saying his plan would benefit the middle class. “John McCain thinks that giving these Americans a break is socialism. Well, I call it opportunity, and there is nothing more American than that,” Obama said.

“”It’s kind of hard to figure how Warren Buffett endorsed me, Colin Powell endorsed me, and John McCain thinks I’m socialist.”

Most think McCain attacks unfair, poll finds
Posted: 04:54 PM ET
(CNN) — A growing number of Americans believe John McCain has attacked Barack Obama unfairly, a negative perception of the Arizona senator that could cost him at the polls come Election Day.

According to a new survey from CNN and the Opinion Research Corp., nearly six in 10 Americans believe McCain has unfairly gone negative in his bid for the White House. That percentage is significantly higher than it was last September, when just 42 percent thought the Republican presidential nominee was running an overly negative campaign.

It also is considerably higher than the percentage of Americans who feel Obama has gone unfairly negative.

In recent weeks both campaigns have stepped up spending on negative television ads and launched attacks at each other’s record. But comments from both McCain and Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin questioning Obama’s relationship with former 1960s radical William Ayers have drawn particular scrutiny, as has the GOP ticket’s recent suggestion Obama will seek to carry out “socialist” policies.

McCain Giving Up on Colorado
CNN reports that top officials of Sen. John McCain's campaign are "making tough decisions" as they now see Colorado, New Mexico and Iowa no longer winnable.

Instead, the campaign's "risky strategy" is counting on Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and a comeback in Pennsylvania.

The McCain campaign responds: "We see the race tightening both internally and in public polling. We are within striking distance in the key battleground states we need to win."

Gov. Sarah Palin had critical words about the robocalls the McCain-Palin campaign has been using in key battleground states, according to CNN.

Said Palin: "If I called all the shots, and if I could wave a magic wand. I would be sitting at a kitchen table with more and more Americans, talking to them about our plan to get the economy back on track and winning the war and not having to rely on the old conventional ways of campaigning that includes those robocalls and includes spending so much money on the television ads that, I think, is kind of draining out there in terms of Americans' attention span. They get a bit irritated with just being inundated..."
