Timeline: Eight Years of Republican
Failure --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, DC - The Majority Leaders Office has created an interactive timeline highlighting Republican failures under President Bushs leadership. House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Republican failures: "Republicans eight years in the White House, and six years at all the levers of power, have resulted in a faltering economy, a failing energy policy, record deficits and debt, numerous cases of corruption, and an America overstretched and weakened in the world. America cannot afford more of the same from Republicans." http://majorityleader.house.gov/members/failures_timeline.cfm ### |

Obama camp requests special
prosecutor for fraud investigation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WASHINGTON (CNN) The Obama campaign announced Friday that it is asking Attorney General Michael Mukasey to turn over any investigations of voter fraud or voter suppression to Special Prosecutor Nora Dannehy, the same special prosecutor recently appointed to investigate the U.S. attorney firing scandal. Its the latest salvo in an escalating war over allegations of possible voter irregularities during the upcoming presidential election. Bob Bauer, the Obama campaigns general
counsel, said partisan politics was behind Thursdays leak
from senior governmental officials about a preliminary FBI investigation
into the voter registration activities of ACORN, the embattled
community organizing group that has become the focus of Republican
efforts to highlight possible fraud as the election approaches. |
Iran, Iceland denied Security
Council seats -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Iran is under U.N. sanctions for its nuclear program, and Iceland is having financial problems. The seats were awarded to Turkey, Austria, Japan, Mexico and Uganda. Representatives from those countries will replace Belgium, Indonesia, Italy, Panama and South Africa in January. Iran issued a statement blaming its loss
on several conditions, including: inadequate opportunities
with intense competitions in the Asian group of countries;
unfair behavior and a false propaganda campaign by certain
major powers; as well as the inherent deficiencies in the current
mechanisms of the United Nations, particularly at the Security
Council. It said it will continue to call for changes in
the Security Council that would make it more democratic
and better responding to the realities of the current era. |
Credit squeeze loosens as
key rate drops -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) Bank-to-bank lending rates dipped again Friday, an indication that government moves to juice the economy is having an effect. The overnight Libor rate fell to 1.67 percent from 1.94 percent Thursday, according to the British Bankers Association. The very short-term lending rate is at its lowest level since September 20, 2004, when the rate was 1.66 percent, according BBA. Libor is a daily average of what 16 banks charge other banks to lend money in London and is used to calculate adjustable rate mortgages. The higher the rate, the tougher it could be for homeowners to pay those mortgages. Last Thursday, overnight Libor reached
5.09 percent and had spiked as high as 6.88 percent after the
U.S. $700 billion bailout bill was signed into law on October

North Korea steps up nuclear
disablement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pyongyang has put back all seals on equipment at the facility and reinstalled surveillance equipment, said State Department spokesman Sean McCormack. He added that U.S. inspectors at the site reported North Korea also removed 60 percent of the spent fuel rods at the reactor. On the reactor, they have actually gone beyond where they were prior to their reversing the disablement steps, McCormack said. From Elise Labott, CNN State Department

Stevens takes stand in his
trial -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WASHINGTON (CNN) Sen. Ted Stevens, who is fighting a seven-count indictment accusing him of filing false financial forms with the Senate, took the stand on his own defense Thursday afternoon following the testimony of his wife. The bulk of the money the Republican senator is accused of trying to hide is related to a major renovation at the Stevens family chalet in the ski town of Girdwood, Alaska, about 40 miles from Anchorage. Stevens testified that he believed the Senate financial forms he signed were accurate and truthful. Asked by his defense attorney whether he intended to file a false statement, Stevens replied, No, I did not. And he denied engaging in any scheme to conceal information from the Senate. Stevens was preceded on the stand by his
wife, Catherine, who answered questions about renovations at
their chalet. |
