"Oh Brother!" There
they go again --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ohio Republican Party is using the failing candidacy of their State Senate candidate (who passed a law as a State Rep to drill for natural gas on school property ... no kidding!) as a vehicle to dump an extra million dollars into a race to attack Congressman Dennis Kucinich! Dennis' brother Gary Kucinich is the Democratic nominee for State Senate in Ohio's 24th District and the Ohio Republican Party and the Ohio Senate Republican Campaign Committee are spending huge sums of money against him. Nothing unusual here. But the campaign ads aren't just focused on Gary. The TV ads, entitled "Oh Brother" begin with Dennis' picture! The size of the initial buy which just started running is over $100,000. A campaign mailer ostensibly to attack Gary Kucinich has Dennis' picture on it. Their pictures are on a "Whack-A-Mole" game with a child posed to knock down Gary AND Dennis! Keep in mind that Dennis took this district from a Republican in 1996. With national and state republican committees joining in against Dennis, it is absolutely imperative that Dennis Kucinich get the resources to be able to withstand the direct and indirect attacks so that he can remain in Congress as a pillar of truth and courage. In the primary election you came through with a tremendous effort in a few days to make it possible for Dennis to win against an onslaught by corporate Cleveland. Now you are needed again. Please talk to your friends and family. Please make it possible for Dennis to raise the money he needs to remain your voice in Congress. There are now only three weeks to go before the election, please help by contributing generously. http://kucinich.us/contribute Thank you for always being there! |
You need to see some of the
offensive attacks we're up against. I just recorded a short video
on my laptop about John McCain's negative ads. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the remaining 21 days, we need to be ready to respond to smears like these -- and worse. We need to show that our supporters will fight back against the McCain campaign's low road tactics. That's why our goal is to bring 100,000 new donors into this movement before midnight on Friday, October 17th. That means in New York we need 8,000 new donors to step up this week. Now is the time to make your first donation. This is your last opportunity to partner with a previous donor who will match every dollar. Your donation of $5 becomes $10, $25 becomes $50, and $50 becomes $100 when it's matched by a fellow supporter. Watch the video and double your impact by making a matched donation today.
John McCain and his allies want smears and lies to drive this election. That must be because the McCain campaign knows they don't have good answers for the issues that matter to ordinary people in New York -- like the economy, fixing Wall Street, and health care. And they've flatly stated that if they talk about the economy, they will lose. Instead, they keep coming up with new, outrageous attacks that are even more offensive and baseless than the ones before. The issues facing our country are too important to let our next president be determined by petty political tactics. Help reach the goal of 100,000 new donors this week. You can provide the vital resources needed to fight back against these attacks and show John McCain that there's a cost to his 100% negative campaign. Double your impact today with a matched donation. Make your first donation to help bring the change we need on November 4th: https://donate.barackobama.com/match We've already seen the cost of eight years of failed policies. With just 21 days left, we have to show John McCain the cost of ignoring the real issues and focusing on false, negative attacks. Thanks, David David Plouffe |

Bank stocks surge on $250B
investment plan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair announced details of the proposal Tuesday morning. The hope is that injecting $250 billion into the nations financial system will get banks to lend to one another and ultimately thaw frozen credit markets. While the money is expected to be divvied up among banking institutions of all shapes and sizes, half of the $250 billion would go to nine of the nations largest banking institutions. an embassy in Beirut, al-Assads adviser Buthaina Shaaban
said. |
Obama weighs in on McCain
plan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From From CNN Senior Political Producer Sasha Johnson
Sen. Obama campaigned in Ohio Tuesday. The plan gives taxpayers a better chance of getting their money out, he said. It also gives the treasury some more direct mechanisms to monitor and apply some ground rules to participating banks. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/10/14/obama-weighs-in-on-mccain-plan/ |
Poll Update: Obama has big
leads in key states -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney
Obama has taken a wide lead in Colorado,
and several other states. A series of new surveys from Quinnipiac University, the Wall Street Journal, and WashingtonPost.com suggest McCain is significantly behind in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Colorado a state that hasn't voted Democratic in 16 years, and one where a loss could prove to be a fatal blow to McCain's White House hopes. |
Internet in Canada will be
going dark to prevent leaks of election results --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last updated at 4:47 PM on 14/10/08 Internet in Canada will be going dark to
prevent leaks of election results http://www.journalpioneer.com/index.cfm?sid=180215&sc=653 The World Wide Web may be a wealth of information but on election day, the Web will go dark. The Canada Election Act outlaws the publishing of election results until every poll across Canada is closed. That means websites, live audio and video streams and blogs will not be able to report election results until 11 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time. Dana Doiron of Elections Canada says its important to ensure the vote results are not known in areas where the voting is still underway. Still, Doiron admits its becoming more and more difficult to do in the so-called information age, where everybody with an Internet connection is a citizen journalist. The reason is to ensure that nothing that is reported in the East would have an influence on the way people vote in the West, said Doiron. Moreover, for a number of years westerners were peeved that before they even went to the polls they heard that it was all over. Therefore, they felt alienated from the process and that their vote really didn't matter. There have been people prosecuted for failing to follow the rules. Penalties can range from $1,000 fine and a year in jail to fines of $10,000 and two years in jail. Last year, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the law after a case that dated to 2000 went before the court. In the 2000 federal election, Paul Charles Bryan published results from Atlantic Canada on the Internet despite being told not to by officials. He was charged, but argued the charges were unconstitutional under the Charter of Rights and Freedom, which protects freedom of expression. He won his argument at the British Columbia Supreme Court but lost at the British Columbia Court of Appeal. Nigel Armstrong, The Guardians web editor, says the newspapers website will be abiding by all election laws. He said the newspaper is planning extensive coverage online, but none of that will begin until 11 p.m. The Guardian will have results from across Prince Edward Island and across the country, provided by The Canadian Press, he said. The election ticker, on the left-hand side of our main web page under the heading Election 08 Results, will provide up-to-the-minute results nationally, as well as breakdowns by region, by province and by individual riding. These results on The Guardians website will be leading edge, updating faster than broadcast networks which must show ridings one at a time, he added. The Guardian has assembled a team of reporters and photographers who will be out across the Island, providing The Guardians website with full coverage Wednesday. The election results blackout affects not only newspapers. National television networks will not be allowed to broadcast results nationally. That means networks like CBC Newsworld and CTV Newsnet that broadcast nationwide will not be broadcasting results until 11 p.m. But regional networks, like CBC, CTV and Global, will be broadcasting results locally in Atlantic Canada only. Their signals will be blocked out in the rest of the country. The same is true in radio. Scott Chapman of Newcap Radio in Charlottetown, which owns Ocean 100 and K-Rock, said theyll have to unplug the live stream of their radio signals on the Internet so that local results cannot be heard in other parts of the country. Were having to shut off our live stream on the website for both stations, he said. Well turn it back on once all the polls are closed.
Poll watch: Polls open on P.E.I. at 8:30 a.m. and will stay open until 8:30 p.m. Below is a list of when the polls close across the country (Atlantic time) Newfoundland, 9 p.m. Atlantic (Maritimes), 8:30 p.m. Eastern (Quebec, most of Ontario), 10:30 p.m. Central (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, part of Nunavut, northwestern Ontario), 10:30 p.m. Mountain (Alberta, most of Northwest Territories, part of British Columbia), 10:30 p.m. Pacific (Most of B.C. Yukon), 11 p.m. |

Iraq reviews semi-final
U.S. deal -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A senior Bush administration official, however, said the draft of the security pact was final, and that it calls for U.S. troops to be out of Iraqi cities by June 2009 and out of Iraq by the end of 2011 unless the Iraqis ask the U.S. to stay. The U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussions, said negotiations on the pact had finished. But that doesnt mean we have a deal until the Iraqis agree, the U.S. official said. One of the issues that had held up negotiations
was whether U.S. troops will remain immune from Iraqi law. The
U.S. official said negotiators had reached a compromise
on the issue. |
U.S. budget deficit hits an
all-time high -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WASHINGTON (CNN) The federal budget deficit has hit an all-time high, according to figures released Tuesday by the Office of Management and Budget and the Treasury Department. As of September 30, the deficit was $454.8 billion, meaning the government closed out the fiscal 08 year with a deficit nearly double the 2007 level of $161.5 billion. The previous record deficit was $413 billion in 2004. In a statement, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson blamed the economy, saying, This years budget results reflect the ongoing housing correction and the manifestation of that in strained capital markets and slower growth. Lower tax receipts and bigger outlays, including a $100 billion dollar stimulus package, pushed the deficit higher, said OMB director Jim Nussle.
