Our attention has been consumed with Wall Street drama
« Thread Started on Oct 3, 2008, 12:08am »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our attention has been consumed with Wall Street drama and the comedy event of the season -- tonight's vice-presidential debate -- but many people don't realize that in most states if you're not registered to vote by Monday, you cannot vote for president in November. In some states, the deadline is as early as this Saturday!
Will you do me a favor? Beginning right now, will you start asking everyone you know if they are registered to vote? Before you say hello, will you ask, "Hey, are you registered to vote here in (name of town)? 'Cause the deadline is Monday, and you have to be registered where you live." (Click here to find out what the deadline is in your state and click here to find out what the procedures are to sign up and vote. If you are a college student and want to find out where your vote counts most, click here.)
For the next couple of days, each of us has to do whatever we can to get people registered. Especially people who have recently moved, or students who are at college (students can vote where they go to school). Obama's two strongest bases -- young people and African Americans -- are traditionally the two groups who have the lowest voter registration and the lowest voter turnout. For Obama to win, this must change -- and it has to change today or tomorrow, not next week.
So send an email to everyone in your address book and attach this link so they know how to register and what the deadline is. Call the local Obama headquarters or the NAACP or black pastors or student Dems and offer your time to register people this weekend. It's called "the ground game," and it's where we always lose to the Republicans. Each of us need to commit to doing something in the next 48 hours to get the unregistered registered.
The more enlightened states allow you to register the day you vote. But in most places the deadline to register is this Monday, October 6th at 5pm.
Thanks for taking the time to make sure everyone you know is registered, and for helping them out if they're not.
Yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. Tonight, the Senate passed an even worse "bailout" bill than the one the House defeated on Monday night. Only 25 Senators (and most of them for the wrong reasons) voted "No." It now moves to the House for a vote, possibly on Friday. Why did Obama and Biden vote for it? I think we all know the answer. Let's keep our eye on the ball of removing the Republicans from the White House, but let tonight be our first reminder that our work is not finished on November 4th when Obama wins. The struggle between what is best for the people and what is best in order to line the pockets of Wall Street will continue. 150 million Americans combined can't even match the wealth of the richest 400 Americans. All we have is our vote. And there will always be more of us than them. We will all need to become more politically active if we are going to get our democracy back.
P.P.S. Bill Maher's new film, "Religulous," opens tomorrow. It's hilarious and it raises some important and controversial questions. Go see it if you have a chance. It's directed by Larry Charles, the director of "Borat."

Vice Presidential Debate Reaction

Vice Presidential Debate Reaction
With expectations so low for Gov. Sarah Palin, she did better than many probably thought she could. But in the second half of the debate, it was as if she ran out of things to say. Her performance was very uneven, particulary on foreign policy.

In contrast, Sen. Joe Biden got stronger as the debate went on. He showed he has the best debating skills on either ticket. He was particularly strong in defending Sen. Barack Obama and strapping Sen. John McCain tightly to President Bush. Biden handily won this debate.

Other reactions:

Andrew Sullivan: "Biden's sobriety and authority and call for fundamental change is both reasonable and solid. It will resonate, I think. As you can read, I began this debate feeling that she was steam-rolling him. She was. But it was a steam-roller coming at you on fumes, not real fuel. She doesn't have it. Maybe one day she might. But not now. Biden's peroration was very, very strong. There is no contest here. There was only one loser: Gewn Ifill. She was intimidated, peripheral, neutered. The rules didn't help. But Ifill put in a dreadful performance."

Ben Smith: "My quick take is that Palin passed a pass-fail test, though she flagged as the debate went on. Though she was chosen for her emotion connection, she was the drier of the two candidates... Biden, meanwhile, was -- as he should have been, given his experience and skill at this -- a more effective presence, and a more lucid one. He effectively, and emotionally, used the forum to drive the Obama campaign's core message that McCain isn't the man for the economic moment."

Marc Ambinder: "Averaging expectations, style and points, it was a wash. Partisans have reason to be satisfied; I honestly have no idea how undecided voters will react (although CBS's panel of them gave Biden an edge.)"

Mark Halperin: "No big moments, no news, little to spoof about Palin, no major Biden gaffes."

Ezra Klein: "Palin turned in a genuinely competent performance, and Biden turned in a superlative one. His performance tonight was the best I've seen from any candidate in this election, including the primaries. Just a superb job. I'm a bad barometer for middle America, but tonight seemed a clear win for him and his ticket."

Biden wins debate, Palin exceeds expectations, poll says

(CNN) — A national poll of people who watched the vice presidential debate suggests that Democratic Sen. Joe Biden won but also hints that Republican Gov. Sarah Palin exceeded expectations.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey is not a measurement of the views of all Americans, since only people who watched the debate were questioned.

Fifty-one percent of those polled thought Biden did the best job in Thursday night’s debate, while 36 percent thought Palin did the best job.

But respondents said the folksy Palin was more likable, scoring 54 percent to Biden’s 36 percent.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Peter Michalski rejected a request by Palin’s Republican allies to shut down the investigation and ruled that the subpoenas were issued properly by the state Senate Judiciary Committee.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Stocks tumbled Thursday as frozen credit markets and weak economic reports amplified jitters ahead of the House vote on the $700 billion bank rescue plan.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 348 points, 3.2 percent, recovering a bit from a drop of 391 points earlier. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 4 percent and the Nasdaq composite lost 4.5 percent.

“There’s still concern about whether or not the House will pass the bill and even if they do, whether it will be effective,” said Ron Kiddoo, chief investment officer at Cozad Asset Management.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A federal judge Thursday rejected a motion by defense attorneys asking him to either to declare a mistrial in the criminal case against Sen. Ted Stevens or dismiss the indictment against him.

Instead, Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled Stevens’ trial will continue Monday.

Defense attorneys had claimed prosecutors belatedly turned over information that might be helpful to Stevens’ case.

Sullivan said the information can be used by Stevens’ attorneys as the trial proceeds.

Oil prices drop
Posted: 05:34 PM ET
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Oil prices fell more than $4 a barrel Thursday as investors worried that the ailing U.S. economy would continue to weigh on fuel consumption, despite Senate approval of a plan to unfreeze the credit markets.

U.S. crude for November delivery ended the day down $4.56 to $93.97 a barrel in New York — the lowest settle price since September 16, when oil closed at $91.15 a barrel.

Concern that businesses and consumers would rein in their spending on petroleum-based fuels has played a major factor in oil’s fall from a record high of $147.27 a barrel in mid-July.

As money becomes tight, energy spending is often one of the first areas to see cuts.

Hope Now, the alliance of mortgage servicers, counselors, and investors assembled to combat foreclosures, said it helped 189,000 homeowners avert foreclosure in August, down 1.7 percent from the number of people helped in July.

“It’s difficult to look at any one month and see a trend,” said Faith Schwartz, executive director of Hope Now. “We’re still outpacing the second quarter in total workouts.”

Bloomberg seeks 3rd term

NEW YORK (CNN) — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Thursday he is asking the city council to change the office’s two-term limit allow him to run for a third term.

“If the City Council should vote to amend term limits, I plan to ask New Yorkers to look at my record of independent leadership and then decide if I’ve earned another term,” Bloomberg said in a news conference at City Hall.

The mayor, a billionaire businessman, is credited with helping New York City recover economically after the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, which felled the twin towers of the World Trade Center and killed more than 2,700 people.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Credit remained hard to come by Thursday — even after the revised government bailout plan cleared the Senate — as investors waited to see if the bill can pass through the House.

The Senate on Wednesday night gave a stamp of approval to a financial rescue plan that was slightly changed from one rejected by the House just two days earlier.

The bill would allow the Treasury to buy up to $700 billion of troubled assets from financial institutions. Those assets, mostly mortgage-related, have caused the credit markets to seize up.

U.S. jobless claims soar
Posted: 12:11 PM ET
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The number of out-of-work Americans filing new claims for unemployment insurance rose last week to a 7-year high, according to a government report released Thursday.

The Department of Labor said initial filings for state jobless benefits increased by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 497,000 in the week ended September 27.

The consensus estimate of economists surveyed by Briefing.com was for a decline to 475,000. The prior week was revised up 1,000 to 496,000.

The number of people filing for jobless benefits is the highest since the 517,000 reported in the week ended September 29, 2001, when unemployment soared in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. At this time last year, the figure stood at 324,000.

Like Barack Obama, Joe Biden understands both the economic stresses here at home and the strategic challenges in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world.

Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin start their debate with a discussion of the economy.
(CNN) – Sen. Joe Biden gave a knowledgeable but restrained performance in Thursday night's debate, while Gov. Sarah Palin sought to show that her accomplishments as governor and mayor prove she is qualified to be vice president.

Biden slammed John McCain, saying that "he has been no maverick on the issues that matter to people lives," but his only challenge to Palin was asking her to articulate a policy on the Iraq war.

Palin pushed her "track record of reform" and said she and McCain are a " team of mavericks."

"We're known for putting partisan politics aside to just get the job done," she said.

Palin tried to paint Barack Obama as "dangerous" for being open to meeting with rogue leaders without preconditions.

"An issue like that taken up by a presidential candidate goes beyond naivete and goes beyond poor judgment," Palin said.

"A statement that he made like that is downright dangerous because leaders like [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, who would seek to acquire nuclear weapons and wipe off the face of the earth an ally like we have in Israel should not be met with without preconditions and diplomatic efforts being undertaken first."

Holmes: Palin 'wildly' exceeded expectations.
(CNN)–Palin: A+. The plus is for wildly exceeding expectations. She more than held her own. She was polished, direct, folksy, and on message. She stressed her personal experience both as a mom and as a governor, from the kitchen table to the executive branch, her record as a reformer and bipartisan deal maker. She even got Biden to agree with her.

Biden gets an A. He was tough, but respectful, disciplined and clear. He hammered away at McCain's maverick status. Biden was clearly in his element.

This debate was a credit to both candidates. I think voters can be proud of what they just watched.

The change we need is fixing this broken economy from the bottom up -- not tax breaks for the wealthy and huge corporations that ship U.S. jobs overseas. We need to focus on defeating al Qaeda and the Taliban and restoring America's standing in the world -- not an unending commitment in Iraq.

Let's be clear: Governor Palin and Senator McCain are offering nothing but more of the same failed Bush policies at home and abroad, trying to disguise them in the rhetoric of change.

Hoyer Statement on September
Unemployment Report, Dismal State of Economy

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor reported that the American economy lost 159,000 jobs in September, bringing the total number of jobs lost in 2008 to 760,000:

"Today’s unemployment report is more discouraging news about the state of our economy. America has lost jobs every month of 2008; September’s loss of 159,000 jobs brings the yearly total to more than three-quarters of a million. Combined with more than a million home foreclosures, those unemployment numbers demonstrate, in Americans’ daily lives, the failure of the Bush Administration’s economic policies. But they also demonstrate the real-world impact of a crisis threatening to paralyze our financial system. If the flow of credit dries up, businesses will be unable to take out loans, many will be unable to meet their payrolls, and many more Americans will be in danger of pink slips they did nothing to serve.

"Today, the House of Representatives is taking two strong steps toward economic recovery. First, we hope to pass a financial rescue bill designed to restore the flow of credit to families and businesses. Second, we intend to extend unemployment benefits for seven weeks, or 13 weeks in the hardest-hit states. If we do not act, nearly 800,000 workers who had their unemployment benefits extended in July will find themselves out of luck this Sunday—dumped into the midst of a brewing economic crisis. Unemployment insurance does not simply help those struggling through tough times—economists consider it one of the best ways to stimulate our economy.

"There is no doubt that today’s news reflects the hardships faced by families across our country. But they should know that Congress is working overtime to get our economy back on track."

House members change vote to support bailout
Posted: 11:33 AM ET
WASHINGTON (CNN) — At least eight members of the House of
Representatives said Friday they had switched positions and would now support
the proposed $700 billion bailout of the nation’s financial system.

Rep. Howard Coble, R-North Carolina, said he plans to switch his vote
after constituents began urging him to do so. He said the people he represents
initially urged him to oppose the plan.

“By having waited, I think we did improve the bill,” he said. “Inaction
is not an option.’

Other Republicans who said they plan to change their votes to support the
bill include Rep. Sue Myrick, R-North Carolina. She told reporters that “it’s
the best thing for the country.

“I don’t care about politics….I may lose this race over this vote but I
don’t care … It needs to be about what’s right for the country.”

Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tennessee, said he plans to change his vote because
“we’re out of choices. Our backs are up against the wall.”

At least five Democrats who opposed the bill announced plans to change
their vote — Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland and
Rep. Hilda Solis of California.

“We have to restore trust in our banking institutions,” Solis said.

Rep. Donna Edwards, D-Maryland, told reporters she would change her vote.
And Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-New Jersey, said he would switch sides, too.

“I pray that I’m doing the right thing,” he said.
Monday’s vote was 205 in favor of the bill, 228 opposed. The bill needs a
simple majority of the representative present and voting to pass. The bill
passed the Senate 74 to 25.

The final vote is expected on the bill sometime Friday.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The economy experienced the biggest drop in jobs in more than five years in September, according to a Labor Department jobs report released Friday.

There was a net loss of 159,000 jobs in September, the ninth straight month the U.S. economy has lost jobs. The August job loss was revised to 73,000 jobs, taking year-to-date job losses to 760,000.

Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast the loss of 105,000 jobs in the month.

The unemployment rate remained at 6.1 percent, the same level as August and in line with economists’ forecast.

The report is based on surveys of employers and households conducted in the week of Sept. 8 to 12, a period before the worst of the current financial crisis hit Wall Street. That crisis caused banks to hoard cash and cut back on credit extended to businesses.

to Seoul on Friday from two days of talks in North Korea aimed at saving an
unraveling disarmament deal with the reclusive communist nation.

Hill, who extended his stay in North Korea a day longer than planned,

Hill briefed his South Korean and Japanese counterparts, Kim Sook and

He said his meeting with his North Korean counterpart Kim Gye Gwan was

Hill flies to Beijing on Saturday to brief his Chinese counterpart before

Talks involving North Korea and five other nations — known as the

The letter, posted on the Los Angeles Times Web site Friday, echoes a statement issued a day earlier by California State Treasurer Bill Lockyer, saying the state has been locked out of credit markets for the past 10 days because of the national financial crisis.

“Absent a clear resolution to this financial crisis that restores confidence and liquidity to the credit markets, California and other states may be unable to obtain the necessary level of financing to maintain government operations and may be forced to turn to the Federal Treasury for short-term financing,” Schwarzenegger wrote.

Hoyer: An Emergency Like This
Calls for the Courage to Compromise

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) today spoke on the House Floor in support of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

“On Monday, the salient dividing line in this House was not between parties: It was between those who understood the dangers of doing nothing, and those who had yet to be convinced.

“Since then, I hope that the number of the convinced has only grown.

“Maybe some were convinced when a vote in this chamber led to the evaporation of $1.2 trillion dollars of wealth. Maybe some were convinced when they heard that America lost another 159,000 jobs last month and is in danger of losing many, many more. Maybe some were convinced by the stories like this one, from a small-town car dealer in Utah: 'I’m not going to be able to pay my employees next week. I can’t get the kind of credit line from the bank that I’ve had through my entire career unless you do something.'

“What happens on Wall Street is bound up with the jobs of millions, and the retirements of millions, and the homes of millions, and the dreams of millions. And if disaster strikes those few square miles in Manhattan, it will spread until every one of those jobs and retirements and homes and dreams is in danger.

“This week, I’ve heard from the Prime Ministers of Australia and Japan, who are telling us that their people are bracing themselves, worried that America will not rise to the occasion. We sing the praises of American leadership—but this is what that leadership costs. Responsibility comes with our power.

“For all of those reasons, this bill is essential. So many of us have improved on the Administration’s plan, which came to us at a mere three pages—shorter than many families’ mortgages.

“The heart of the bill remains a plan for the government to buy up bad financial assets, restoring the flow of credit.

“But we fought to ensure that taxpayers will be the first to profit if and when those assets rise again in value—making the true price tag nowhere near $700 billion. As Warren Buffett said of this bill: 'If they do it right, and I think they’ll do it reasonably right…they’ll make a lot of money.'

“In addition, we made sure that the financial community will be obligated to pay the taxpayers back for their loan.

“We restricted executive compensation, because CEOs whose recklessness helped bring on this crisis do not deserve taxpayer-subsidized golden parachutes.

“We are subjecting the Treasury Secretary’s decisions to strong oversight.

“Finally, we will help homeowners renegotiate their mortgages, to prevent a further flood of 2 million projected foreclosures.

“On Wednesday, the Senate raised federal insurance of bank accounts from, $100,000 to $250,000, and also chose to add several tax cuts.

“I strongly disagree with adding those tax provisions, because the Senate has chosen to finance them with debt. This crisis is teaching us about the dangers of fiscal recklessness, and that debt does, indeed, matter—a lesson the Senate has ignored.

“But an emergency like this calls for the courage to compromise. On Monday, Chairman Frank said: 'If we aren’t prepared to accept some of the things we don’t like, we will not have the power to deliver for the people we care about.'

“For me, those people are families unable to take out a loan to buy an appliance or pay for college. They are Americans who have worked their whole lives, only to see their retirement accounts threatened. They are millions of workers fearing a pink slip they did nothing to earn.

“For their sake, we must act, together, today.”

Dems focus on future after vote

WASHINGTON (CNN) — House Democratic leaders turned their attention to the future Friday, just minutes after a dramatic House vote in favor of a $700 billion financial bailout proposal.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Congress will shine a new “light of scrutiny and accountability” on the nation’s financial system to try to prevent a replay of the problems that plunged the nation into an economic crisis.

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Massachusetts, and Rep. Henry Waxman, D-California, plan to hold hearings to increase scrutiny of the financial system, she said.

“We want to take our country in a new direction for the middle class,” Pelosi said.

Democratic women in the United States Senate share

Democratic women in the United States Senate share a special bond. We crack that glass ceiling a little more every time one of us is sworn in, and we work hard to support each other and to make sure our number keeps growing.

So I hope you'll join me in supporting three wonderful women running for the U.S. Senate this year. Kay Hagan in North Carolina, Mary Landrieu, running for reelection to the Senate from Louisiana, and Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire are all running very strong campaigns. Their elections will take us a big step closer to a filibuster-proof Senate.

We need these three women in the Senate to help me fight for the issues you and I care about like health care and strengthening our economy.

Help Kay, Mary, and Jeanne win their Senate races on November 4 -- make a contribution via HillPAC today!

I know these women; and I know that can make a real difference for all Americans. We are also going to work really hard on many of these issues that matter to so many women. Together, we'll lead in the Senate on the issues that women face daily -- unequal pay, affordable health care for their families, and reproductive rights.

Let me tell you a little more about the races. In North Carolina, Kay Hagan is running a great race and some polls even show her ahead. Kay will invest in helping families stay in their homes, reducing foreclosures, and finding innovative new ways to stabilize neighborhoods. She will seek public-private partnerships to renovate neighborhoods and turn foreclosed properties into affordable rental or ownership units.

Mary Landrieu has been working her heart out for the people of Louisiana, still focused on Katrina recovery three years later while her opponents are doing everything they can to knock her out of her Senate seat. Senator Landrieu is spearheading efforts to rewrite federal disaster laws, which are unsuited to deal with larger disasters like Hurricane Katrina and largely ignore communities that host disaster evacuees.

And Jeanne Shaheen is criss-crossing the battleground state of New Hampshire, working hard in a race that is one of our top pick-up opportunities. Jeanne and I both have a long record of advocating for expanding children's healthcare. While Governor, Jeanne launched the New Hampshire's Children's Health Insurance Program, which has provided affordable health insurance to tens of thousands of New Hampshire children.

Together, along with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, we're going to set a bold new course for this nation. That's why I'm personally committed to helping these candidates win in November. And I hope you'll join me in giving them your full support.

Help these amazing women win in November -- contribute to Kay, Mary, and Jeanne today!

If we keep working, we'll keep winning.

Thank you for everything,

Hillary

Hoyer Responds to Senate's
Failure to Pass Critical Iran Legislation

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the Senate's failure to pass the Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act:

“I was disappointed by the Senate’s failure to pass H.R.7112, the Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act of 2008, due to Republican opposition. The House approved this critical legislation just days ago and we had hoped the Senate would follow suit. However, Majority Leader Reid’s effort to pass the measure failed due to opposition from the Republican side.

“It is clear that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a great threat to our national security, to our allies, and to the entire Middle East. Those concerns are heightened by the frequent inflammatory statements of Iran’s president and the world’s leading anti-Semite, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who calls the Holocaust a myth and expresses his desire ‘to wipe Israel off the map.’ Ahmadinejad’s appearance at the United Nations last week demonstrates that he remains a skilled propagandist; but his regime’s record of belligerence and deceit is unmistakable. It is not difficult to imagine the threat posed by nuclear weapons in the hands of such a regime.

“That is why we have worked so hard to show that Congress is committed to prevent the threat from becoming reality. This legislation would have brought strong economic pressure to bear on Tehran, by expanding sanctions on commercial dealings with Iran and supporting divestment from Iranian enterprises. It is shameful that Senate Republicans stood in the way of this measure – because America ought to be using its full economic strength to curb Iran’s destructive ambitions. This was a vote for our national security, for Israel’s security, and for the security of the entire free world. I regret that the Congress will not be sending this bill to the President.”
