House Democrats Statement on GDP for First Quarter 2012

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the estimate of GDP for the first quarter of 2012:
“Today’s report by the Bureau of Economic Analysis shows that our recovery continued its forward momentum in the first quarter of 2012, growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. While we still have much work to do, the continued growth in GDP is a sign that our economy is on the right path. Let’s not forget that in the first quarter of 2009, as President Obama’s term came into office, real GDP plummeted 6.7%. For the sake of all those still out of work as well as for the millions of families still struggling to make ends meet, we cannot afford to let our recovery stall.
"Congress has a responsibility to lead and to act. Democrats are ready and eager to take action on our comprehensive Make It In America jobs plan, which will boost our economy over the near and long terms by investing in the competitiveness of our businesses and the quality of our workforce in order to create new opportunities for the middle class. I hope Republicans will suspend their opposition to jobs legislation and instead work together with us on finding real solutions that hasten our recovery and put millions of Americans back to work.”
