Stock volumes surge, highest in more than a month

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- A choppy Thursday seemed to attract more investors to U.S. stocks, with the two major stock exchanges posting high-water levels of volume. For New York Stock Exchange-listed shares, it was the largest volume day since April 10, with 4.14 billion shares traded. For Nasdaq-listed shares, volume was the largest since March 16, with 1.98 billion shares changing hands. Average NYSE composite volume so far this year is 3.79 billion shares, whereas the average for Nasdaq is 1.75 billion shares.
