(CNN) — New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, New York Federal Reserve President Tim Geithner, and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton were all prominently mentioned as possible Obama Cabinet members in a flurry of speculation Friday afternoon.

Richardson is a “serious contender” for commerce secretary in the Obama administration, two sources close to the transition told CNN Friday, although they cautioned that he could be tapped for another senior post as well.

Rumors of Clinton’s imminent pick as secretary of state swirled again Friday. On Thursday, three aides on Obama’s transition team told CNN that President-elect Barack Obama is “on track” to nominate his former rival for the Democratic presidential nomination after Thanksgiving.

Clinton senior advisor Philippe Reines said discussions about the matter were still taking place and “very much on track,” but “any reports beyond that are premature.”

At the same time, the Wall Street Journal reported that the president-elect plans to nominate New York Federal Reserve President Tim Geithner to lead the Treasury Department. The Federal Bureau of Investigation began calling Geithner confidants this week as part of the vetting process, the Journal reported.
