NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS RESULTS OF AUGMENTED INSPECTIONCONDUCTED AT THE WOLF CREEK NUCLEAR PLANTThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting on March 6 to discussthe results of an Augmented Inspection conducted at the Wolf Creek nuclear power plantfollowing a loss of off-site power that occurred there. The plant is located near Burlington, Kan.The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the New Strawn Community Center, 319 W. Getz, in New Strawn, Kan. The meeting is open to public observation and members of the NRC staff willbe available to answer questions from members of the public after the business portion of the meeting. On Jan. 13, officials at the Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Co., declared an UnusualEvent after the failure of a main generator electrical breaker, followed by an unexplained loss ofpower to a startup transformer. This caused the switchyard to be de-energized, which removed the plant’s connection to the electrical power grid. All safety systems responded as expectedand emergency diesel generators automatically powered safety-related equipment. An UnusualEvent is the lowest of four NRC emergency categories. The Unusual Event was terminated about three hours later after offsite power waspartially restored. The NRC will issue a report on the results of the inspection within 30 days.###
