Volkswagen sales soar 47.9% in January

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Volkswagen said Wednesday that its U.S. sales soared 47.9% last month to 27,209 vehicles - its best mark for January since 1974. The gains were led by its Jetta and Passat marques, along with all high-mileage, clean diesel models. "We ended 2011 strong and are seeing the momentum continue into 2012," said Jonathan Browning, chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. "With the today's release of our much-anticipated [Super Bowl] Game Day ad, 'The Dog Strikes Back,' our relentless focus on the core pillars of the business, and a full line-up of new and refreshed vehicles, Volkswagen is off to a strong start in 2012."
