Un-democracy; Proposed electoral system will under« Thread Started on Jul 6, 2007, 11:08am » --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Un-democracy; Proposed electoral system will undermine the voting process in Ontario Hoy, Claire Editorial - Wednesday, July 04, 2007 @ 09:00 read at source> http://www.thesudburystar.com/webapp/si ... =Ignorance, as the saying goes, is bliss. While it may be true in some circumstances, when it comes to knowledge of our electoral system, alas, widespread ignorance is anything but bliss. It accounts, more than any other factor, for the woefully low turnouts in elections at all three levels, and this ignorance exists mainly because we do next to nothing to promote knowledge of and interest in our political system. Typically, in response to a situation that politicians did more than anybody else to create, their solution is to create a new, less democratic system, rather than attack the obvious problem of our existing system. For those of you who don't know - and a recent Environics poll found that 70 per cent of Ontarians don't know it - you won't be just electing a new provincial government when you trudge off to the polls on Oct. 10, you'll also be given a choice of two different electoral systems for the future. Voters - at least those who bother to show up - will be asked the following question on their ballot: "Which electoral system should Ontario use to elect members to the provincial legislature? The existing electoral system (first-past-the-post)" or "the alternative electoral system proposed by the citizens' assembly (mixed member proportional).
