Hoyer Statement on November Jobs Report



WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for November:
“Our economy added 140,000 private sector jobs in November, the twenty-first consecutive month of growth, and we saw our unemployment rate fall from 9% to 8.6%. These are further positive signs for our recovery, but as long as Republicans continue to avoid passing a real jobs plan we will be unable to achieve the kind of significant job creation we need.
“As a first step, it is imperative that Congress not adjourn for the year without extending the emergency unemployment compensation benefits that so many Americans looking for work rely on to avoid slipping into poverty. But we must also do more. It’s clear that Republicans don’t have a plan and instead have wasted time on ideologically-driven bills that don’t create jobs. House Democrats have had our Make It In America plan on the table all year, but the House Republican leadership refuses to call it up. The President introduced his American Jobs Act in September, and Senate Republicans blocked it from consideration.
“Thankfully, President Obama has taken what action he can in the absence of Congress doing its part. I am pleased that he will be announcing today a commitment through the Better Buildings Initiative to retrofit buildings owned and used by the federal government to make them more energy efficient. This will save taxpayers in energy costs over the long term and create jobs in the short term.
“In challenging times like these, with so many Americans out of work and struggling to find jobs, real leadership is knowing when to set ideology aside and work with the other party to do what is right for the country. I truly hope this month’s jobs report will lead Republicans to do so.”
