Hoyer Statement on the Retirement of Congressman Barney Frank

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Congressman Barney Frank, Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, announced that he is retiring at the end of this Congress:
“America, and the principles for which it stands, have been well-served by Congressman Barney Frank during his over three decades of service in the Congress. He has brought an exceptional intellect, political courage, common sense, a wonderful wit, and a love of country and of the People’s House to his service. He will be greatly missed.
“Barney’s trailblazing tenure in office culminated in the passage of landmark financial reform legislation in 2010 to make Wall Street more accountable to Main Street. As Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, he always asked the Committee to consider the effect its decisions would have on average investors, retirees, small businesses, and the workers whose jobs depend on the health of our markets. Through his sponsorship of legislation to promote equality for LGBT Americans, his efforts to end discrimination in the workplace and the classroom, and his commitment to providing affordable housing for low-income families, Barney has personified the scriptural call: ‘Justice, justice, you shall pursue.’
“Barney has been one of Congress’s most outspoken and effective advocates for America’s working families, and I have been fortunate for the friendship we have developed while serving together in Congress. I was saddened to hear that he will be retiring, and I wish him all the best.”
