Stocks get back some strength; Dow, S&P 500 higher
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks indexes regained some of their earlier strength in volatile end-of-session trading Thursday. After falling rising 260 points then falling 45 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was recently up 56 points, or 0.5%, at 11,064. The S&P 500 tipped 1.4 points higher, or 0.1%, to 1,152.48, led by financial and utilities stocks. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 29 points, or 1.2%, to 2,463. Combined with hopes and doubts about European efforts to prevent a surprise sovereign default, stock investors also focused on better U.S. economic data. End of quarter positioning and moderate volumes likely also contributed to volatile trading.
