U.S. stocks end with mild rise, third day of gains
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks closed with mild gains Tuesday, giving up much of their advance in the final minutes of trading, but recovering from a loss early in the session that intensified following a report on consumer confidence. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 20.7 points, or 0.2%, to 11,559.95. The average is still down for the year, though it briefly tipped higher during the session. The S&P 500 added 2.84 points, or 0.2%, to 1,212.92, led by the telecoms and natural-resource sectors. The Nasdaq Composite ended up 14 points, or 0.6%, to 2,576.11. Stocks reversed higher in afternoon trading following the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's last policy statement.
