Hoyer Statement on the 45th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid
WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the 45th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid. “Today marks the 45th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid—two essential programs that have brought better health, security, and peace of mind to generations of seniors and families in need. Medicare and Medicaid are among the proudest legacies of the Democratic Party, and just as Democrats fought to pass them over Republican objections, we are fighting to keep them strong today.
“This year’s health reform law has significantly strengthened Medicare: it extends its solvency, creates incentives for doctors who cooperate to treat seniors more effectively and efficiently, and makes prescription drugs more affordable to millions of seniors by closing the Part D ‘donut hole.’ The health reform bill also expands access to Medicaid, as part of the goal of access to affordable health care for every American. Democrats will continue to protect Medicare and Medicaid, so that generations to come will be able to benefit from the same security those programs have made possible for so many.”
