Hoyer Statement on Equal Pay Day

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on Equal Pay Day, which is observed today:

“Each year on Equal Pay Day, we recognize the work that has been done and the work that remains to end the unfair pay discrimination that women face in America’s workplace. Women continue to earn around 77 cents on the dollar compared to men, and especially during difficult economic times, it is unjust that a hard-working member of a family may not earn equal pay for equal work.

“Since the beginning of the 111th Congress, Democrats have continued the decades-long fight for equal pay. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was the first piece of legislation President Obama signed into law upon taking office, protecting workers who are subjected to pay discrimination. But more work remains to ensure all women across this Nation have equal opportunity to support themselves and their families. Every American regardless of gender, race or age deserves equal pay and today we recommit ourselves to the fight for full equality for all Americans.”
