Hoyer Statement on Passing of Senator Frank Lautenberg

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the passing of Senator Frank Lautenberg:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of Sen. Lautenberg’s passing this morning. He was both a true statesman and a pragmatist who became the longest-serving senator in New Jersey’s history and had a record of reaching across the aisle to achieve results for the people of his state. Throughout his years in the U.S. Senate, he worked tirelessly to secure investments in infrastructure for the Northeast Corridor, to strengthen our economy, and for a strong U.S.-Israel relationship.

“I had the privilege of traveling with him to Romania and Bulgaria in 1987 to advance the cause of freedom and human rights behind the Iron Curtain, and it was clear that Sen. Lautenberg was as determined in the role of U.S. Senator to work toward these goals as when he fought for the liberation of Europe as a young man. As the last veteran of World War II in the Senate, he represented a generation of leaders who left a legacy of service that continues to inspire all Americans.

“I join in expressing my condolences to his wife, Bonnie, and to his children, his entire family, and to the people of the Garden State, which he loved so dearly and served so ably.”
