Hoyer Statement on the Making College More Expensive Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in opposition to H.R. 1911, the Making College More Expensive Act:
“While I believe that the House must take action to keep student loan interest rates low before the July 1 deadline, this Republican bill is the wrong approach. Instead of making college more affordable, their plan would make it more expensive to pursue higher education, which puts students on a pathway to a successful career.
“Making higher education more expensive inhibits the development of a skilled and competitive twenty-first century workforce, which is key to maintaining our nation's global leadership. Congress needs to get to work reauthorizing the Higher Education Act so we can address college costs as part of a comprehensive approach. In the meantime, I urge Republicans to work with Democrats on a solution before July 1 that will keep student loan interest rates from doubling and help more of our young people afford college.”
