Hoyer Statement on Manufacturing Report

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Institute for Supply Management released its report for April:

“Today’s report on the state of our manufacturing sector showed that, while still expanding, manufacturing growth slowed in April. This news is yet another reason for Speaker Boehner to appoint budget conferees to take the next step in producing a final budget, so that we can replace the irrational sequester with a big and balanced deficit reduction agreement. Uncertainty caused by sequestration’s cuts are putting pressure on manufacturers and private businesses to plan for the worst, rather than expanding, creating jobs, and continuing our economic recovery. Congress must take action to restore certainty for these businesses by reaching a bipartisan compromise that can get America’s fiscal house in order.

“While I will continue to press for a big, balanced deal to rein in deficits, we must also take steps to help our manufacturers create good jobs here at home. House Democrats’ Make It In America jobs plan focuses on four key policies needed to achieve this goal: adopting a national manufacturing strategy, promoting U.S. exports, encouraging the return of jobs and innovation from overseas, and training and securing a twenty-first century workforce. All four of these measures will help our country attract jobs that sustain opportunities for our middle class. I hope Democrats and Republicans can work together in the weeks ahead on a bipartisan basis to produce a final budget that replaces the sequester and pass Make It In America jobs legislation into law quickly.”
