U.S. stock indexes end with April gains to 14,839.80
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - U.S. stocks on Tuesday chalked up tepid gains, with the S&P 500 index advancing for a sixth month, its longest such stretch since September 2009. The bull market, which entered a fifth year in March, has been "driven by strong earnings and three rounds of bond purchases by the Fed," said Alan Skrainka, chief investment officer at Cornerstone Wealth Management in Des Peres, Mo. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 21.05 points to 14,839.80, up 1.8% for April. The S&P 500 index gained 3.96 points to 1,597.57, a monthly rise of 1.8%. The Nasdaq Composite gained 21.77 points to 3,328.79, leaving it with a 1.9% monthly gain.
