SEC picks two attorneys to head enforcement unit
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The Securities and Exchange Commission, in an unusual move, hired two attorneys to lead the agency's enforcement division. The SEC on Monday said it picked a former federal prosecutor, Andrew Ceresney, 41, as one of the division's directors and the unit's acting head, George Canellos, 48, as the other. Ceresney worked with the agency's new chairman, Mary Jo White, while she was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and, later, at the law-firm Debevoise & Plimpton. Ceresney was a member of the securities and commodities fraud task force and major crimes unit during his stint with the U.S. Attorney's office. At Debevoise & Plimpton, he represented firms and individuals in white collar criminal and SEC investigations. An SEC spokesman declined to comment on how the two directors will divide responsibilities.
