House Republicans Unveil Disappointing Budget, Continue to Refuse Bipartisan Efforts
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Earlier this week, House Republicans unveiled their budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2014. Unfortunately, their budget contained many of the same disappointments and rejected policies from previous years. Instead of proposing a balanced budget that combined spending cuts and revenues to restore our nation’s fiscal sustainability, the House Republican budget focuses on partisan talking points and relies on magic asterisks that hide trillions in unexplained savings. Republicans continue to protect the wealthiest, while placing the burden of deficit reduction on the backs of seniors, women, veterans, federal employees, and the most vulnerable. This budget will come to the House Floor for a vote next week.
The partisanship proposed in the House Republican budget was also evident on the House Floor this week. I voted against the partisan Workforce Investment Reauthorization Act, which would drastically cut funding for programs that help Americans find work. Instead of making it harder for Americans to find work, Republicans should be working to create jobs and reach a balanced and bipartisan solution to address our fiscal challenges. I am hopeful that Republicans will continue the spirit of bipartisanship that President Obama brought to the Hill this week, and I look forward to working towards a responsible solution that creates jobs, reduces our deficit, and puts our nation back on a fiscally sustainable path.
Sincerely yours,
STENY H. HOYER
