Hoyer Statement on Women's History Month

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Women's History Month:

“I am proud to join in marking Women’s History Month 2013, when we recall the courage and determination of those who have fought for women’s equality and celebrate the many critical contributions women have made to our nation. This year, we observe the centennial of the 1913 National Women’s Suffrage Parade in Washington, which saw 5,000 women raise their voices to demand their equal right to vote.

“Today, with American women serving in harm’s way in Afghanistan and taking on increasing levels of leadership in government, business, science, education, and every other field, we know that there is no glass ceiling that cannot be broken, and I am proud to serve in a Congress with more women Members than ever in our history. But challenges remain that we must confront together - from breaking down remaining barriers in the workplace, preserving a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, and strengthening laws that protect against domestic violence, as we did when the House passed a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act yesterday.

"It is also crucial that we make certain women are empowered as innovators and entrepreneurs by investing in greater participation by women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and math – or ‘STEM’ fields. This year, let us mark Women’s History Month by recommitting ourselves to building a more equal future together.”
