Obama wants quick action on immigration reform
from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - President Barack Obama on Tuesday pushed Congress to use new bipartisan momentum behind comprehensive immigration reform to quickly pass legislation. "The good news is, that for the first time in many years, Republicans and Democrats seem ready to tackle the problem together," Obama said in a speech at a high school in Las Vegas. Obama said he shares the principles laid out by a bipartisan group of eight senators, who on Monday put forward a plan that would, among other things, create a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people now in the country illegally and award green cards to those who earn doctorates from U.S. universities in math, engineering, science or technology. "There is a genuine desire to get this done soon and that is very encouraging but action, this time, must follow. We can't allow immigration reform to get bogged down in an endless debate," he said. If Congress falters on the bipartisan plan, Obama said he would send his own legislation to Congress and insist on an up-or-down vote.
