Hoyer Statement in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which occurs on Monday, January 21:

"On Monday, we will join in remembering the tireless work and the inspirational life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In his thirty-nine short years walking this Earth, Dr. King preached a gospel of peace and brotherhood that continues to resonate across the country, in the hearts of millions seeking to create a more perfect union for the generations to follow.

“A champion of non-violent resistance to injustice, he taught us all that the bitterness of hatred and vengeance cannot be a lasting foundation on which to construct the bright future all Americans deserve. It is only through tolerance and a commitment to equality that we can build a strong democracy and a thriving society.

“To honor his memory we must continue his work in our own day. We can do it in Congress by pursuing policies that protect equal rights and equal opportunities for all – including the crucial right to access the ballot box. As Americans, we have a duty to remember Dr. King’s legacy – not for his sake but for ours. I am proud to join in honoring his memory and renewing our commitment to the principles for which he stood.”
