Hoyer Remarks at Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Ceremonial Swearing-In

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) delivered remarks this morning at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's ceremonial swearing-in for the 113th Congress. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

“I am honored to be here to mark this day with you and usher in another Congress where I know the Congressional Black Caucus will have a significant and positive impact. For over forty years, the CBC has been a moral voice in the Democratic Caucus as well as the conscience of the Congress. By promoting an agenda of middle-class opportunities for traditionally under-represented communities that have historically had to contend with poverty, discrimination, and disenfranchisement, the CBC is making sure that the promise of the American dream is accessible to all our people.

“In the 112th Congress, the CBC played an important role in Democrats’ efforts to highlight the issue of job creation, both through its 'For the People' job tours and through the constant and untiring advocacy of its Members here in the House.

“Under Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, the CBC has raised its public profile and redoubled its efforts to shape policy. I know that under Chairwoman Marcia Fudge, this work will continue, and the CBC will continue to grow and play an even larger role in our policymaking. You will continue to advance our shared Democratic goal of helping all of our people make it in America.

“Two years ago, at this event to mark the beginning of the 112th Congress, Rep. Cleaver said this: ‘The long and laborious march toward a society that cares not about the issues of race will eventually arrive at its destination. But today is not that day.’

"Neither is today that day of which he spoke. But we are closer to that day because of the work the CBC has engaged in over the past two years – by fighting for jobs, for affordable health care, and for fair access to the ballot box for all. I am confident that, because of the work you will continue to do in the 113th Congress, that day will become closer still. Thank you.”
