NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Retail stocks, after having declined 5.1% this month, turned higher with the broader markets on the last day of the 2012 trading on Monday as investors hope for potential congressional action to avert the "fiscal cliff" at midnight. The sector sentiment had been dampened as retailers are expected to report disappointing December holiday sales on Thursday. Among the gainers, Macy's Inc. rose 3%. Abercrombie & Fitch Co. was up 2.2%. Buckle Inc. rose 2.2%. Vitamin Shoppe Inc. fell 2.6% after the retailer of nutritional products said the U.S. Federal Trade Commission notified the company it's conducting an investigation into its planned acquisition of the assets of Super Supplements Inc.
