Education Secretary Arne Duncan called on community leaders to step up efforts to ensure safety in schools in response to last week's school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. He joined public school and safety leaders, including Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, at a safety forum at Neval Thomas Elementary School. Secretary Duncan said the recent mass shootings have "fundamentally changed" the world and addressed the need for comprehensive protocols and gun control measures, including access to mental health care, to protect students and teachers from violence. In addition, he announced a new round of Obama Administration's Promise Neighborhoods grants which is awarded to organizations to improve educational and developmental outcomes for students.
