NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks opened higher Thursday, lifting the Dow Jones Industrial Average into positive territory for the week, as investors bet on at least a short-term fix to avert the so-called fiscal cliff. "We expect the stock market to move back-and-forth on the tone of interviews with Washington leaders as the negotiations continue heading into December," emailed Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Companies in Lake Oswego, Ore. The Dow industrials rose 57.10 points, or 0.5%, to 13,042.21. The S&P 500 index climbed 7.37 points, or 0.5%, to 1,417.30. The Nasdaq Composite added 20.74 points, or 0.7%, to 3,012.49.
