White House slams Boehner's debt-limit stance

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- House Speaker John Boehner's hard line on increasing the debt ceiling in the fiscal-cliff negotiations is "deeply irresponsible," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Thursday. Responding to Boehner's earlier comment that there would be a "price tag" for hiking the debt limit. "Asking that a political price be paid in order for Congress to do its job to ensure that the United States of America pays its bills and does not default for the first time in its history is deeply irresonsible," Carney said. The comments harken back to the bitter fight over the debt ceiling waged in the summer of 2011, he said. Legislation raising the debt ceiling should be passed without drama, Carney said.
