Hoyer Statement on Election as Democratic Whip

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today upon election as Democratic Whip:

“I am deeply honored to have been elected by the Democratic Members of the 113th Congress to serve another term as our party’s Whip. Our Caucus’s strength comes both from its diversity and from our unity as we stand up for the values of fairness and equality we share as Democrats.

“As I told my colleagues today, Americans remain concerned about the future of our economy and the state of our fiscal health. In the 113th Congress, Democrats will do our part to help every family make it in America and set our nation on a sound fiscal path. Where we can find common ground with Republicans to achieve these goals, Democrats are ready to do so. We will stand firm for our core principles and demand a Congress that achieves real results for the American people – one that rejects politics as usual and, instead, embraces action based on responsible compromise. Democrats are ready to do our part to move the country forward and meet the challenges that will confront the 113th Congress.”

Hoyer was nominated to be the Democratic Whip by Congressman Elijah Cummings (MD) and seconded by Congressman Ben Ray Lujan (NM), Congressman-elect Sean Patrick Maloney (NY) and Congresswoman-elect Tammy Duckworth (IL).
