Australian stocks move higher in early trading

SYDNEY (MarketWatch) -- Australian stocks advanced on Monday, with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index up 0.4% at 4,491.70. Energy firms were among the best performers, with supply disruptions on the radar for traders with Hurricane Sandy due to hit the U.S. East Coast early this week. Woodside Petroleum Ltd. advanced 0.6% and Beach Energy Ltd. climbed 1.5%. Elsewhere in the commodity space, mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. advanced 1.2% while iron-ore extractor Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. rose 1.6%.
