Washington, DC
October 19, 2012

Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation Thomas M. Countryman will travel to Northern California from October 22 to 26 for a series of meetings and public events focused on nonproliferation and related contemporary international security challenges.

Assistant Secretary Countryman will chair the 2012 G8 Nonproliferation Directors Group (NPDG) meeting, which will provide the opportunity for G8 country representatives (from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom, and the United States) to consult on key issues concerning the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons, and their delivery systems. The NPDG has focused on ways to strengthen nonproliferation regimes, particularly the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT).

Assistant Secretary Countryman will also meet with eminent nonproliferation experts at Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, as well as the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He will provide remarks on “Addressing Next-Generation Proliferation Challenges” at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on October 26th at noon. This event will be open to the press.
