Hoyer Statement on Women's Equality Day

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on Women’s Equality Day, which is Sunday, August 26, the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment:“This weekend, I will join with Americans across the country in celebrating Women’s Equality Day, marking the anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment’s ratification, which recognized women’s right to vote and participate in our electoral democracy. On this day, we mark the achievements women have made across the spectrum of American society, but we also acknowledge how much work remains.

“As a proud father of three daughters, I know firsthand the importance of ensuring that all Americans have equal access to opportunities. Congress must continue working to level the playing field for women, which includes an insistence on equal pay for equal work. I was proud to have helped lead the effort last Congress to pass landmark health reform that ended discrimination against women by insurance companies seeking to charge them more than men for the same coverage. Our nation has made strides toward full equality for women in the 92 years since the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, including in the areas of integrating the military, providing opportunities for girls’ and women’s athletics, and ensuring women can make their own health care choices. Let us continue this important work in the years to come.”
