Hoyer: New CBO Report Confirms Health Care Law Controls Costs, Reduces Deficit

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the Congressional Budget Office released a report today on how the Affordable Care Act is controlling health care costs and helping to reduce our deficit:“Today’s report by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office makes it very clear: the Affordable Care Act is controlling the growth of health care costs and contributing to deficit reduction. The CBO report attests that House Republicans’ latest attempt to repeal health reform would leave an additional 30 million Americans uninsured and increase deficits $109 billion over the next ten years as well as an even greater amount – roughly 0.5% of GDP, or $1.5 trillion – over the following decade.

“These numbers tell a powerful story: the health reform legislation we passed in the Democratic-controlled 111th Congress is achieving the goals of expanding access to insurance coverage and controlling the growth of costs for Americans’ care. At the same time, the Affordable Care Act ends discriminatory practices that insurance companies used to deny coverage to children with pre-existing conditions, allows young people under age 26 to access coverage through their parents’ plans, and prevents insurers from imposing lifetime limits on coverage. Because of health reform, the Medicare Part D 'donut hole' is closing, and beneficiaries are able to receive free preventive services like mammograms and colonoscopies.

“I am proud of our work to institute new patient protections and increase access to affordable coverage. Democrats will continue working to implement the Affordable Care Act and ensure its benefits are widely felt, and I call on Republicans to abandon their repeated efforts to repeal it.”
