Readout of Deputy Secretary Carter's Visit to Guam

Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs George Little provided the following readout:
"The deputy secretary of defense traveled to Guam July 19-20 as part of a 10-day tour of Asia, where he met Guamanian civilian leaders, U.S. military commanders, toured defense facilities, and discussed the way forward for the Marine Corps on Guam.
"Shortly after arriving, Deputy Secretary of Defense Carter visited the governor's office where he met and held productive discussions with civilian officials, including Governor Eddie Calvo and Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo.
"At a dinner co-hosted by the governor and the congresswoman, Deputy Secretary Carter congratulated the people of Guam on the 68th anniversary of their Liberation Day.
"Guam has become an important strategic hub for the U.S. military in the Western Pacific. The Department of Defense is working to enhance the presence, partnerships and power projection capabilities of the U.S. military in the Asia-Pacific region, as part of the rebalance.
"His current trip to Asia continues Friday with visits to Japan, Thailand, India and the Republic of Korea."
