Kansas City Young Democrats: A Call to Action

Friends,

This upcoming weekend Kansas Democrats from across the state will be doing their part to help clean up their communities, build homes for the needy, honor Kansas veterans, and volunteering with numerous charities and nonprofit organizations. This is all in response to President Obama's call to action in our communities and in conjunction with the Kansas Democratic Parties "Community Service Weekend" from September 25th through the 27th.

I am asking you to come take part in one of three great community service projects around KC.

Last weekend the Kansas City Young Democrats got their hands dirty and clean-up the remains of an area often used as a homeless camp. Next, we will be working with a group of University of Kansas School of Medicine first-year students and with the Rosedale Neighborhood Association painting elderly community members porches and doing some yard work for those who are no longer able bodied enough to achieve these tasks.

We only need 5 more people at the KCK Rosedale volunteer effort on 9/26. To join us, please contact me and let me know you can help out. We're meeting at 8:45am in the parking lot just to the west of Dykes library on 39th Street (across the road from the KU hospital).

If this is something you won't be able to do than please consider helping out some of our other friends who are putting on events across the Kansas City metro area. Details below.

I would love to see some new faces of his events. So please forward this information along to your friends and if you do plan on attending bring a new person along to help out.

Thank you all for your dedication.

BTS Releases 2nd-Quarter 2009 Airline Financial Data;
Airlines Report Improved Operating Margins
The network, low-cost and regional airline groups all reported improved operating margins in the second quarter of 2009, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation reported today in a release of preliminary data.
BTS, a part of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration, reported that network carriers as a group posted their smallest operating margin loss for any quarter since September 2007 while the low-cost and regional groups reported profit margins. The low-cost group’s profit margin of 7.0 percent was its largest since the second quarter of 2007 while the regionals’ profit margin of 7.2 percent was its largest since the fourth quarter of 2006.
The low-cost and regional performance offset the network loss margin, resulting in the 21 airlines covered in this press release achieving their first overall profitable operating margin since the third quarter of 2007. Only five of the 21 reported loss margins while the remaining 16 reported profit margins. See Airline Financial Data Press Releases for historic data.
The network group has reported loss margins for seven consecutive quarters, but the -0.5 loss margin in the most recent quarter was the smallest. In the April-to-June period, three of the seven network airlines, the group with most of the industry’s largest carriers, reported loss margins. American Airlines reported the largest loss margin of the group, followed by Continental Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
Low-cost carrier Virgin America and regional carrier ExpressJet Airlines were the only other airlines to report loss margins in the second quarter.
See BTS Airline Financials Release for summary tables and additional data.

Secretary Chu Presents Smart Grid Vision and Announces $144 Million in Recovery Act Funding to Transition to the Smart Grid

Washington, DC – In his keynote speech to the GridWeek 2009 Conference this morning, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu detailed his vision for implementing the smart grid and modernizing America’s electrical system: a stronger, smarter, more efficient electricity infrastructure that will encourage growth in renewable energy sources, empower consumers to reduce their energy use, and lay the foundation for sustained, long-term economic expansion.

During his remarks, Secretary Chu also announced more than $144 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the electric power sector, including $44 million in awards to state public utility commissions and $100 million in available funding for smart grid workforce training programs.

“America cannot build a 21st Century energy economy with a mid-20th Century electricity system. This is why the Obama Administration is investing in projects that will lay the foundation for a modernized, resilient electrical grid,” said Secretary Chu. “By working with industry leaders and the private sector, we can drive the evolution to a clean, smart, national electricity system that will create jobs, reduce energy use, expand renewable energy production, and cut carbon pollution.”

$100 Million for Smart Grid Workforce Training

Secretary Chu also announced the availability of $100 million in funding from the Recovery Act to support workforce training for the electric power industry. This initiative will expand job creation and career advancement opportunities associated with smart grid and electricity transmission projects and will help establish training programs for workers in the utility industry and electrical manufacturing sectors who will play a key role in modernizing the country’s electrical grid.

The Funding Opportunity Announcement announced today will support two primary workforce training strategies:

$35 -$40 million to develop training programs, strategies and curricula that will be used as models for how to train or retrain workers in the electric power sector, with a focus on achieving a national, clean energy smart grid. This funding will be open to a range of applicants, including utilities, colleges and universities, trade schools, and labor organizations.
$60-$65 million to conduct workforce training programs for new hires and retraining programs for electric utility workers and electrical equipment manufacturers to further knowledge of smart grid technologies and their implementation.
These programs will expand the United States’ capability to manufacture and install the electrical equipment and new technologies needed to implement the smart grid, and help ensure that the U.S. maintains its position as a global leader in innovation and technological advancement. The full Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is available HERE.

$44 Million for State Public Utility Commissions

State public utility commissions (PUCs), which regulate and oversee electricity projects in their states, will be receiving more than $44.2 million in Recovery Act funding to hire new staff and retrain existing employees to ensure they have the capacity to quickly and effectively review proposed electricity projects. The funds will help the individual state PUCs accelerate reviews of the large number of electric utility requests that are expected under the Recovery Act. State PUCs will be reviewing electric utility investments in projects such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, carbon capture and storage, transmission lines, energy storage, smart grid, demand response equipment, and electric and hybrid-electric vehicles. A full list of states and award amounts is available HERE.

David Axelrod, The White House: Got a few minutes?
Dear Friend,

Four minutes — that’s all you need to learn just what you get from health insurance reform. Take the few minutes and watch now

The details the President outlines in this video are those that every American needs to know. No matter your political party or whether or not you have insurance, his plan for health care security and stability matters to all of us.

Millions of American citizens cannot get health insurance — and 14,000 are losing their insurance every day. If we do nothing, half of Americans under the age of 65 will lose their health insurance at some point in the next ten years.

That’s not right. Plain and simple. For Americans with insurance as well as those without it, inaction is not an option. In America, no one should go broke because they get sick.

Bottom line — health insurance reform will provide more security and stability to those who have health insurance, coverage for those who don’t, and will lower the cost of health care for our families, our businesses, and our government.

As the President says, now is the time to deliver the change we need on health care. Forward this email and make sure your family, friends and social networks take four minutes and watch this video.

Thank you,
David

David Axelrod
Senior Adviser to the President
