seeks about $2 billion in debt forgiveness
from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Japan Airlines
Corp. is asking creditors to forgive about $2.8 billion in debt
as part of its turnaround plan, Kyodo News reported Tuesday.
The Tokyo-based carrier owes $15 billion, which is weighing down
its ability to raise capital. It is also planning to expand its
job cuts to more than 9,000 from its prior goal of 6,800, the
news agency said. It will also dump its MD-90 jets and replace
its Boeing Co. 747s with more fuel-efficient aircraft. JAL's
largest creditor is state-owned Development Bank of Japan, while
other lenders include Mizuho Corporate Bank, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi
and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., Kyodo reported.

Cisco
to buy Starent Networks for $2.9 billion
from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Cisco Systems
Inc. on Tuesday said it will acquire Starent Networks Corp. for
$2.9 billion, or $35 a share, in a move to expand the networking
giant's reach into the wireless market. The deal reflects a 21%
premium compared to Starent's closing price on Monday of $29.03.
Starent makes equipment used to help mobile carriers connect
wireless-phone customers to the Internet, one of the fastest
growing segments of the telecommunications market. Cisco said
the purchase would reduce earnings in 2010 and 2011 and begin
to add to profits starting in 2012. Starent, which went public
in 2007, is based in Tewksbury, Mass. It has about 1,000 employees
and generated $254 million in sales in fiscal 2008.
