US-CERT Current Activity
Malicious Code Circulating via Social
Security Administration Phishing Messages
Original release date: November 24, 2009
at 2:42 pm
Last revised: November 24, 2009 at 2:42 pm
US-CERT is aware of public reports of malicious
code circulating via
phishing email messages that appear to come from the Social Security
Administration. The messages indicate that the users' annual
Social
Security statements may contain errors and instruct users to
follow a
link to review their Social Security statement. If users click
this
link, they will be redirected to a seemingly legitimate website
that
prompts them for their Social Security number. If users enter
their
Social Security number and continue to the next page, they will
be
given an option to generate a statement. If users attempt to
generate
a statement, malicious code may be installed on their systems.
This
malicious code attempts to collect online banking traffic to
gain
access to the users' bank accounts.
US-CERT encourages users and administrators
to take the following
preventative measures to help mitigate the security risks:
* Install antivirus software, and keep the virus signatures up
to
date.
* Do not follow unsolicited links and do not open unsolicited
email
messages.
* Use caution when visiting untrusted websites.
* Use caution when entering personal information online.
* Refer to the Recognizing and Avoiding Email Scams (pdf) document
for more information on avoiding email scams.
* Refer to the Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks
document for more information on social engineering attacks.
Users are encouraged to contact the Social
Security Administration to
verify the authenticity of any messages. Additional information
will
be provided as it becomes available.

The Necessity of Reform
North Georgia Democrats
Please consider placing a letter similar
to this one (you can use this one if you wish, but try and tailor
it specifically to your area and give it your own "voice")
in your local papers. The final stages of the health care reform
fight are coming, and OFA is asking those who are interested
to help build as much public support as possible in these last
few weeks. Thanks!
Tom McMahan
Vice-chair, Dade County Democratic Committee
(letter follows)
We are now closer to making much needed
repairs to our health care system than we've been since President
Teddy Roosevelt offered the first steps in public health initiatives.
With one bill passed through the House and the debate on in the
Senate, its important to remind ourselves why this is a necessary
step to long-term repair of our economy and our social safety
net:
1) Approximately 50 million Americans are
currently without insurance, mostly because they can't afford
it, they have "pre-existing conditions," or they've
simply been dropped by their insurance provider.
2) The number of uninsured is steadily
growing, and its not just a question of the poor. More and more,
its working and middle-class Americans going without.
3) The current health care "system,"
if it can be called that, is projected to cost MORE over the
next 10 years than either version currently in Congress.
4) Issues involving gender discrimination
and insurance will no longer be allowed under either bill.
5) A public option that will spur, not
hinder, greater competition within the insurance marketplace
and will keep people from losing their insurance whenever they
find themselves out of work.
People understandably get nervous whenever
reform of something as important as health care takes place.
There's been many heated words back and forth as this great debate
has proceeded this year. But, respectfully to those who have
voiced opposition to reform....
Can you honestly say that are health insurance
industry is adequately meeting the needs of all the American
people in its current form?
If not this reform, if not denying insurance
companies the ability to drop people in their greatest time of
need, if not stopping the frivolous and deceitful use of "pre-existing
conditions" to deny coverage, and if not providing some
public avenue to cover those that have fallen through the cracks
of our work-based insurance system...
Then what?
We urge all citizens to continue expressing
both their support and their concerns about reform to your Senators
now and to them and your U.S. Representative as the reconciled
version of health care reform is voted on in future weeks. But
do so constructively, not with the same worn-out hyperbole that
was used 40 years ago against Medicare which, by the way, was
passed over virtually unanimous Republican opposition as well.
Cries of "socialism" filled the air then, and America
was "doomed" if Medicare passed.
Medicare did pass, and its worked so well
that the the ideological descendants of those 60s voices of opposition
now claim they are only trying to "save" Medicare by
opposing the current legislative effort.
America can do something that all other
industrialized countries have done in many ways, and we will
do it in our uniquely American way, maintaining private competition,
having a public option when necessary, and strengthening a profound
weakness in our social fabric.

Feingold
Leads Thompson in Possible Match Up
A new Public Policy Polling survey in Wisconsin finds Sen. Russ
Feingold (D-WI) safely in front of former Gov. Tommy Thompson
(R) in a U.S. Senate match up, 50% to 41%.
|
Public
Policy Polling agrees that President Obama is not losing support
among independents
"On our national survey in June Obama
had an 82% approval rating with Democrats. Now it's 83%. He had
a 46% approval rating with independents. Now it's 47%. No real
change on either of those fronts. But with Republicans he's dropped
from an 18% mark to just 10%. That shift is what put his approval
rating below 50% -- he's gone from a small amount of crossover
support to a very small amount of crossover supports."
