Voter ID ideas
From the Ole Miss chapter:
Democrats,
We really aren't trying to overload your
inbox, but we have even more news to dole out. At 1 o' clock,
Delbert Hosemann, the Mississippi Secretary of State, will be
in the student union ball room with the College Republicans.
He will be there to speak about Voter ID, a law that got shot
down by our slim Democratic majority in the Mississippi congress
last year. This year, it will be up for a vote in a statewide
election, so he is back on the trail promoting it. Voter ID has
proven to be significantly discriminatory toward minority groups
in the past, and it's constitutionality is questionable. Hosemann
came last year and we kept him on his toes, so here are a few
questions that we used, that might be worth asking again.
* How many instances of voter impersonation
occurred in Mississippi last year?
* Most voter ID laws do nothing to address the potential fraud
that can occur in absentee ballots; why not?
*Numerous studies have shown that this will have a disproportionate
impact on lower income individuals and minorities, how can you
justify this, especially with our history of having election
laws that disproportionately affected one race?
* I am a college student and vote in Oxford because I am in school
every November. But my drivers license has my parents address
on it. A voter ID law would disenfranchise me if it required
the address on my license to match my registration address. Have
you taken this into consideration?
*Why don't we use a voter ID method that does not require people
to spend money and time getting ID? Why don't we use signature
matching like they do in Pennsylvania or Nevada?
Best of luck, and see you there!
-David McDowell

Senate
Democrats Move to Curb Federal Reserve's Powers
Posted: 10 Nov 2009 04:00 PM PST
By ANNE FLAHERTY
WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats on Tuesday proposed stripping the
Federal Reserve of its supervisory powers and creating instead
three new federal agencies to police banks, protect consumers
and dismantle failing institutions.
The 1,136-page bill, released by Senate Banking Committee Chairman
Chris Dodd, would represent a significant shift in power in federal
oversight of the U.S. market. The Fed has been a dominant figure
in managing the economy, although many lawmakers blame the central
bank for not doing enough to prevent last year's crisis.

Arapahoe County House District 39 Democrats
Reminder - HD 39 meeting 11/12
Just a brief reminder of our monthly HD39
meeting Thursday, November 12th, starting at 7:00pm at Casa Vallarta
restaurant, in the shopping center northeast of the intersection
of Parker and Quincy.
Daniel Horsey will talk with us about the
use of story in effective communications, from the "elevator
talk" to the canvassing pitch at the door.
Daniel is a conflict mediator from Denver,
with a background in theater and communications work. Thanks
to Laura Embleton and CILT, I heard Daniel give a talk a few
weeks ago -- it was very thought- provoking. My hope is that
you will find his presentation Thursday useful and interesting,
and that it will spark good conversations.
We'll also have brief discussions of this
Tuesday's election results, and start the planning process for
the upcoming caucus meetings in early February.
We'll do what we can to keep the formal
meeting under an hour in length.
As always, there will be plenty of opportunity
to socialize and catch up -- usually folks begin to arrive around
6:20pm or so, for a bite to eat before the formal meeting, and
often several of us stick around after the meeting just to stay
in touch and to swap a tale or two.

DNC Chairman Tim Kaine Releases Statement
in Honor of Veterans Day
Today, we honor those Americans who
have served throughout our nation's history from the wars
on our own shores to the beachheads of Europe, from the rice
fields of Southeast Asia to the deserts of the Middle East, and
from across the world's oceans and seas to those who serve stateside
- and take the time to thank them for their unflinching courage
and service.
In the wake of the tragedy at Fort
Hood, and as we work to wind down our operations in Iraq and
determine the way forward in Afghanistan, renewing our promise
to Americas veterans is just as important as ever
not just today, but every day.
Providing for our veterans is critical,
not only because we have a moral obligation to recognize those
who have sacrificed on our behalf, but because our servicemen
and women are a tremendous resource who can help lead the way
as we continue our pursuit of a more peaceful and prosperous
world.
President Obama and our Democratic
Congress have demonstrated a strong commitment to our countrys
veterans, taking several steps in just the last 10 months to
expand economic opportunity, strengthen veterans health
care services, and improve benefits for our troops and military
families. Through the post 9/11 G.I. Bill the most generous
education benefit since the original G.I. Bill of 1944
more than 250,000 veterans will attend college in just the next
two years. President Obama and Congress have worked to strengthen
the VA health care system by transforming it into a 21st century
organization that prioritizes community-based services, promotes
prevention and takes on the injuries unique to modern warfare,
including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain
injury. And President Obama requested, and Congressional Democrats
approved, a 16 percent increase in the 2010 budget for the Department
of Veterans affairs, the largest one-year increase in 30 years.
Veterans and their families are the
only ones who can fully understand the toll of their sacrifice.
But we can, through our every day actions, do our best to see
that they receive the very best service, care and respect from
their country. Today we thank our brave men and women for heeding
the call to duty, and we honor their selfless service.
