Reform
for Our Troops
This morning the President signed legislation
that seems an obvious step, and yet it is one that has not been
taken despite all of the incidents that have cried out for it:
reform of the defense procurement and contracting system. This
accomplishment for American taxpayers ,and for our military who
can now stretch every dollar that much further for those who
serve our country, was made all the more gratifying by the bipartisan
consensus that it finally found.

Hoyer Statement on Memorial Day
WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader
Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in
recognition of Memorial Day, observed Monday, May 25:
This weekend, we honor every American who died in our Nations
service, from the founding days of the Republic to todays
conflicts on the far side of the world. So often, in the halls
of Congress, we speak words like freedom, democracy,
and equality; let us remember, as we say them, that
brave men and women died for them, far from home.
I hope that every American will take time this weekend
to remember that the rights and prosperity we enjoy today were
fought for at the cost of great pain and sacrifice. I hope that
every American will keep in their thoughts not only the dead,
but also our veterans, as well as the troops who are serving
on this Memorial Day, a time of both celebration and mourning
for those of us fortunate enough to be civilians in America.
Finally, I hope that those good thoughts will be backed by actionthat
we will always give our troops the resources they need to succeed,
and that we will provide an honorable welcome for our veterans
when they return home.

Broward Young Democrats New Leaders!
Please take a moment to review the following
announcements from Alexander Lewy:
Dear fellow Young Democrats:
It has been a pleasure being able to work
by your side for the past 3 and half years. Upon returning from
Washington DC where I worked to help build infrastructure for
national progressive and Democratic organizations I found welcoming
Young Democrats eager to turn Florida blue.
As aide and now deputy director in the
office of Congressman Kendrick Meek and President of the Broward
Young Democrats I have been able to outreach and work with many
of you to help strengthen our statewide organization. As some
might know, our national organization, Young Democrats of America,
is having troubling times and our state has been adversely affected.
These tough times are when we need strong
and experienced leadership the most. My friend and partner in
this good fight, Alan Brock, informed me today that he will not
seek re-elect as President of the Florida Young Democrats. I
am however supporting his election as our National Committeeman
and look forward to working with Natalie Kato, Connor Davis and
others to form a cohesive executive board.
In light of these recent developments and
after discussion with current leadership of the Florida Young
Democrats I am offering myself for President of the Florida Young
Democrats (FYD).
As immediate past President of the Broward
Young Democrats, FYD Southeast Regional Director and Vice Chair
of the Young Democrats of America Jewish Caucus I have the experience,
knowledge and leadership needed to help move the FYDs to the
next level.
While campaigns of this importance are
usually discussed for months in advance the circumstances have
left us with little time. Fortunately, the good relationships
I have built over the years with many Young Democratic leaders
from around the state will enable us to come together united
under the FYD banner come next Saturday at our meeting in Miami
Beach.
I would appreciate your support in this
endeavor and look forward to working closely with you in the
years ahead! Please feel free to call me this weekend as I look
forward to hearing from you. Onward to Victory in 2010!
Democratically yours,
Alexander Lewy

MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER
This week, the House made significant strides
in our efforts to rebuild the economy to immediately help families
and provide for long-term growth. We passed and sent to the President
the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act, the Helping Families
Save Their Homes Act, and the Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights
Act. By signing these bills into law this week, President Obama
reaffirmed our commitment to rebuilding the economy in a way
that protects consumers and restores fairness.
Leader Hoyer and Rep. James Langevin at press
conference on the release of the CAO 2009
Disability Report.
On Thursday night, the House Energy and Commerce Committee completed
its markup of the American Clean Energy and Security Act, moving
the bill one step closer to a full vote in the House of Representatives.
This bill will create new clean energy jobs, lower energy costs,
put America on a path to energy independence, and reduce global
warming pollution. Included as an amendment by Rep. Inslee is
a measure I introduced to expand the production of superconducting
and other advanced electric transmission cables, which aims to
improve transmission efficiency, increase the reliability of
the power grid, and assist in the deployment of alternative energies.
It is my hope that we can bring this bill to the Floor by August.
In addition to the bills signed into law this week, Congress
has accomplished a great deal in our first five months. We have
passed and enacted the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,
which sought to restore our economy and invest in future growth;
a major mortgage reform bill to help responsible homeowners;
the Edward Kennedy Serve America Act, which will create new service
opportunities for more Americans to volunteer and help their
communities; the State Children's Health Insurance Program; the
Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act; and a budget that invests in our
future and will reduce our nations deficit.
Our work, however, is far from over. Beginning in June, we will
be focused on clean energy legislation, health care reform, and
appropriations bills that invest in Americas priorities.
As we continue to work on health care reform, sign up to receive
"The Daily Dose" to stay updated on our progress.
Sincerely yours,
STENY H. HOYER
