House Majority Statement on the Fraud
Enforcement and Recovery Act
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader
Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in
support of the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act:
Today, the House voted for final passage of the Fraud Enforcement
and Recovery Act of 2009, a bill that will improve the integrity
of our financial system and help us avoid a repeat of the recent
economic crisis. The legislation gives the Justice Department
the resources it needs to more aggressively pursue fraud in the
use of TARP and recovery funds, which waste taxpayer money; mortgage
fraud, which the FBI reports has increased significantly in recent
years; and corporate fraud, which was typified by Bernie Madoffs
$65 billion Ponzi scheme.
The bill also establishes a Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission,
which will investigate the causes of the crisis and clearly explain
them to the public. The Commissions work will be especially
valuable in Congresss continuing efforts to shape tough,
sensible regulation to prevent the irresponsible Wall Street
risk-taking that severely damaged our entire economy. I look
forward to President Obamas signature of this valuable
legislation.

Republicans
are Losers Across All Demographic Groups
The decline in Republican Party affiliation among Americans in
recent years is well documented, but a Gallup analysis now shows
that this movement away from the GOP has occurred among nearly
every major demographic subgroup. Since the first year of George
W. Bush's presidency in 2001, the Republican Party has maintained
its support only among frequent churchgoers, with conservatives
and senior citizens showing minimal decline.

Texas College Democrats Action Alert:
Concealed Carry Handguns on College Campuses
Hello Texas College Democrats!
I hope the end of the semester went well
for everyone and congratulations to those of you that graduated.
Our work as College Democrats, however, is not done. SB 1164,
the bill regarding Concealed Carry on college campuses, still
has the possibility of passing in the Senate. If it does pass,
the bill will then go back to the House, who did not pass their
version, where it has the potential to become law.
At the Texas Young Democrats State Convention,
Texas College Democrats passed a resolution AGAINST allowing
concealed handguns on college campuses. It is very important
that you take action and call your State Senator. Calling is
very easy to do and more than likely an office aide will answer.
State your name, tell them that you are a constituent and let
them know which school you attend. Tell them you are a member
of Texas College Democrats and you, as well as this organization,
are AGAINST the bill regarding Concealed Carry on College Campuses.
You can find your Senator here: http://www.facebook.com/l/;http://www.senate.state.tx.us/75r/senate/Members.htm
and read SB 1164 here: http://www.facebook.com/l/;http://www.legis.state.tx.us/BillLookup/Text.aspx?LegSess=81R&Bill=SB1164
After you make this call, please send me
a message letting me know who you called. Every call matters.
Also, let me know if you have any questions.

Political Affairs Director

Business Likes ArbitrationIf It Can Control the Process
from AFL-CIO NOW BLOG by Tula Connell
Opponents of the Employee Free Choice Act,
desperate in their efforts to kill the proposed legislation that
would level the playing field for workers seeking to form unions,
have come up with another line of attack. They are making a lot
of noise over the bills arbitration provision. The argument
is just another straw-man attempt at gutting legislation that
would enable more workers to have a voice on the job. (And one
more sign of desperationto wit, the trotting out of widely
loathed figures like Dick Cheney and Karl Rove to attack the
Employee Free Choice Act.)
