From Day One: Immediate Benefits Of Health Reform
Today, President Obama signed health insurance
reform into law. Starting from day one and throughout the next
year, our families, small businesses, seniors, and young Americans
will begin to feel the real and positive impact of reform. The
following table describes some of those benefits.
|
Friend --
I'm writing to you on a great day for America.
This morning, I gathered with members of
Congress, my administration, and hardworking volunteers from
every part of the country to sign comprehensive health care reform
into law. Thanks to the immeasurable efforts of so many, the
dream of reform is now a reality.
The bill I just signed puts Americans in
charge of our own health care by enacting three key changes:
It establishes the toughest patient protections
in history.
It guarantees all Americans affordable
health insurance options, extending coverage to 32 million who
are currently uninsured.
And it reduces the cost of care -- cutting
over 1 trillion dollars from the federal deficit over the next
two decades.
To ensure a successful, stable transition,
many of these changes will phase into full effect over the next
several years.
But for millions of Americans, many of
the benefits of reform will begin this year -- some even taking
effect this afternoon. Here are just a few examples:
Small businesses will receive significant
tax cuts, this year, to help them afford health coverage for
all their employees.
Seniors will receive a rebate to reduce
drug costs not yet covered under Medicare.
Young people will be allowed coverage under
their parents' plan until the age of 26.
Early retirees will receive help to reduce
premium costs.
Children will be protected against discrimination
on the basis of medical history.
Uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions
can join a special high-risk pool to get the coverage they need,
starting in just 90 days.
Insured Americans will be protected from
seeing their insurance revoked when they get sick, or facing
restrictive annual limits on the care they receive.
All Americans will benefit from significant
new investments to train primary care doctors, nurses, and public
health professionals, and the creation of state-level consumer
assistance programs to help all patients understand and defend
our new rights.
As I've said many times, and as I know
to be true, this astounding victory could not have been achieved
without your tireless efforts.
So as we celebrate this great day, I want
to invite you to add your name where it belongs: alongside mine
as a co-signer of this historic legislation. Organizing for America
will record the names of co-signers as a permanent commemoration
of those who came together to make this moment possible -- all
of you who refused to give up until the dream of many generations
for affordable, quality care for all Americans was finally fulfilled.
So, if you haven't yet, please add your
name as a proud health care reform co-signer today:
http://my.barackobama.com/cosigner
Please accept my thanks for your voice,
for your courage, and for your indispensable partnership in the
great work of creating change.
History, and I, are in your debt.

Hoyer: Health Care Security for All
Americans is Now the Law
WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader
Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after
joining President Obama at the White House for the signing of
health reform into law:
Health care reform that will provide access to quality,
affordable health care for all Americans is now law. The enacted
reforms will help bring down costs for American families and
small businesses, give all people the security of health insurance
that cant be taken away, and will reduce the deficit more
than any measure since the Clinton budgets of the 90s that
led to a strong economy and surpluses.
The many benefits of this bill are far-reaching and will
have a positive impact on all Americans. Starting right away,
tax credits will be available for small businesses and there
will be relief for seniors who fall into the Medicare prescription
drug donut hole gap in coverage. Later this year,
a high-risk insurance pool will be available for those who are
uninsured because of a pre-existing condition, young Americans
will have the option of insurance under their parents plan
up to the age of 26, and insurance companies will be prohibited
from dropping coverage for people when they get sick and imposing
restrictive annual and lifetime limits on coverage. These reforms
will be followed by the creation of insurance exchanges, opening
up a transparent and competitive marketplace that will offer
the choice of several private plans and provide tax credits for
middle-class families to make health care more affordable.
Taken together, these reforms will provide all Americans
with greater security that their health care is in their hands,
and America will be a healthier, and more prosperous country
as a result.

Subject: Marriage Equality Debate: TOMORROW!
Dear Friend,
Id like to invite you to a debate
about marriage equality against Maggie Gallagher from the National
Organization for Marriage and Senator Daylin Leach, next Wednesday,
March 24 at 7 p.m.
This debate comes on the heels of the Senate
Judiciary Committees historic defeat of Senate Bill 707,
a bill that would have amended the state Constitution to enshrine
discrimination and define marriage as a union between one man
and one woman only. We prevailed with a bipartisan vote of 8
to 6! But do not be mistaken - though this was a victory for
marriage equality advocates, theres still work left to
do.
The debate will be held Wednesday, March
24 at 7 p.m. at Harrisburg Area Community College and we are
very happy to announce that it will be telecast live on PCN and
broadcast across our Commonwealth. The station will also present
an analysis and discussion of the debate after its conclusion.
Scott Detrow, Capitol Reporter for WTIF will moderate the debate
and Trum Simmons, Sr. Professor of English at the college, will
serve as the moderator for the Q & A session following the
debate.
I hope to see you there! Don't forget to
invite and bring your friends and family!
Thanks,
John Campbell

WASHINGTON - A judge has ordered the release of a Guantanamo

al-Qaida operative who provided advice to three of the Sept.
11 hijackers.
The ruling in favor of detainee Mohamedou Ould Salahi was disclosed
Monday in a two-sentence court entry.
U.S. District Judge James Robertson will issue a written decision
at a later date explaining his reasons for granting the detainee's
petition. The detainee remains at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba, and the Obama administration could appeal Robertson's
order. Even if the administration were to decide against appealing,
Salahi would remain at Guantanamo until U.S. diplomats found
a nation willing to accept him.

Hey everybody,
Here are two messages from the Florida
College Democrats Communications Director Dayna Firth and Nathan
Crick of the Kendrick Meek campaign. Please let us know if you
are able to help out for either of these events
First from Dayna:
Hey guys!
The FCD Conference is a few weeks away,
and we have almost 50 student from across the State signed up
to attend.
If you have any spare room to host our
fellow college Dems, please let me know. If you could email me
at dayna.firth@ufl.edu and tell me how many people you could
host, that would be incredible. Even if it's only one or two
people, every bit helps.
The nights they will be there for the conference
are April 9th and 10th.
Thanks!

Young
Democrats of America Minority Caucus.
Jonathan Still March 22, 2010 at 10:58pm
Subject: A Civil Rights Issue in Oklahoma (Oklahoma House Bill
3384)
Hello Caucus Members and Supporters,
In Oklahoma State House of Representatives, Rep. Randy Terrill
(R-Moore) has authored this bill (HB 3384), which will require
Oklahoma's Public Schools to keep track of children who may not
be in the United States legally. The U.S. Supreme Court has previously
ruled that states have an obligation to educate such children,
and the Oklahoma State Constitution guarantees the right to a
free, public education for ALL children in Oklahoma.
The bill has now reached the Senate, and
the Young Democrats of Oklahoma Minority Caucus is committed
to defeat this bill and to protect the right of all children
in Oklahoma to receive an education. HB 3384's requirement that
parents provide to school districts a birth certificate or other
documentation regarding the citizenship status of the child will
prevent children of undocumented immigrants from attending school,
even though it is their constitutional right .
To support our view, the Young Democrats
of Oklahoma Minority Caucus is planning to protest outside of
the Oklahoma State Capitol on THIS WEDNESDAY (March 24th) at
10am. We have asked support of various State Legislative Leaders
who voted against this bill. We believe that this bill violates
Oklahomans in three ways:
Fiscally Irresponsible/ Unfunded Mandate
Forces kids out of school
Violates Oklahoma Constitution
I wanted to bring this to your attention,
and I ask that you keep in your thoughts our efforts to positively
impact the lives of people throughout the Great State of Oklahoma.
Thanks!
Jonathan Still
